Having dealt with many Gun Shops and Armorers over the years, I'm a retired Army Ranger and a Gunsmith myself, I find Jerry Payne and his staff to be consummate professionals. Their knowledge and selection of high quality firearms and accessories would rank among the highest on the west coast. This attraction brings some of the top shooters in the world to the shop on a regular basis. The ensuing conversations are often opinionated, but invariably entertaining when viewed with a considered eye; not for the weak of heart. I am new to shooting and was shopping for my first firearm. I had a lot of questions that I needed answered and Jerry explained everything in terms that I could understand. He provided me with the materials that I needed to study in order to take my handgun safety test. \r After taking and passing my test, I was ready to purchase. Again, Jerry was there to assist me with picking the correct firearm which would fit my needs. He set me up with the proper storage kit, locking system, cleaning kit, and ammo. He even walked me through how to clean my firearm!\r I had a fantastic experience at Far West and would recommend it to anyone that has any firearm needs! I look forward to shopping there again! more

I couldn't disagree with the other reviewer more. I've done business with Far West for over 10 years. The excellent service they've provided me keeps me coming back again and again even when they aren't the cheapest game in town for the particular item I'm looking for. They've always been helpful and welcoming, even if I was only dropping by to say ""Hi"" and talk shop for a few minutes. Even if I didn't by anything, they'd often urge me to drop by again soon. The service at the other Santa Barbara gun stores pales in comparison. more

I was looking for a specific handgun awhile back and could not find it locally so I asked one of the guys if they would call me if it came in. Took some time but I got a call that it was in, went down and took my handgun safety cert test and paid for my gun. After the waiting period went and picked it up. Ive noticed if its busy it make take some time to get helped but most times ive visited the service was good. Walk it and say HI make eye contact and keep it simple. more

I agree with the person in the other review, this place is awful. I went in a week before I turned 21 to take the HSC test, and they wouldn't let me take it unless I was buying a gun that day. They gave me some BS story about how they were ""rationing"" the cards. I went to Goleta Gun and Supply and they let me take it right then and there. When I made the mistake of going back on my birthday to look at guns, I waited around to be helped for 20 minutes while the guy behind the counter dicked around with two other people who weren't even buying anything. They didn't have what I wanted so when I asked if I could order it online and have it shipped to them he cut me off mid sentence and said ""I don't do that."" I found something I wanted to take a look at in the case but the guy just walked away and didn't care so I left quite angry. While I was there, there was another guy who was buying a used revolver and he had noticed there was a scratch on it and the person behind the counter replied ""well it's too late now, you already bought it."" My brother did have a good experience buying a shotgun from them though, so I don't know. I just know that they were jerks to me and I would never buy anything from them. Pros: The store smells like pipe tobacco Cons: The people working there are morons. more

I went to this store to buy my first handgun. After waiting 30 mintures, the disgusting man behind the counter said, since I'm a girl, I should get a revolver after I repeatedly told him I wanted a 9mm handgun! When I asked to hold them to find which one I liked best, he said they were all too big for me!! AND when I asked to take my handgun license test, they said that was ""at time of purchase of a handgun"" - THIS IS AGAINST THE LAW. They don't even know CA laws!! Half of the items on their shelfs were dusty and looked like returns. Rick at Goleta Valley Gun & Supply is so much more knowledgable and will help you even if you don't buy anything. I bought my 9mm Taurus 24/7 from him and everytime I walk in, he remembers my name. And Rick's shop is much cleaner and organized. GO TO RICK! more
