Don't Listen to the RV Crowd 10/12/2007

Hey captain_bill, you're getting warmer with your Ladybird park suggestion, since it has MOST of what you need. But I'm guessing the only 5 star campground for you would be your front yard, after all there's no full size refrigerator or craftmatic adjustable bed in the rv right? Pros: No people sitting in lawnchairs watching cable tv in front of their Rvs Cons: not dog friendly more

Rock show 5/17/2006

I wouldn't rate ER in the top 10 for camping. If I'm going to camp in central TX, you will find me at the Guadalupe River for daytime activities. What they dont tell you about ER is that it is great for spelunking the fissures throughout the rock. It is dangerous, that's why they dont tell you about it. Climb to to top and look for the portals on the back side. Once inside there are arrows to lead you out. there are 5 or more portals that connect. You need 2 flashlights per person, (one for backup) and good shoes for slippery surfaces. Take it slow, light a candle, and tell stories. Enjoy! Pros: caves, Fredricksburg Cons: Out there more

I've been to Enchanted Rock many times and it is definitely one of my favorite campsites in the country. I've camped all over the country and you just don't find friendlier people anywhere else in the country. I love this place for all the reasons that others dislike it! Nature at its best 5/25/2005

I have been there several time, its Texas Hill Country. There will be Texas sites, like rattlesnakes, cedar trees etc. You have to look at the beauty and history of the rock. I have taken my kids there and we have walked right up on the deer, who seem pretty interested in us too! Its a wonderful family place to explore, easy hikes etc. I would recommended it whol Pros: Cheap , Easy Access, Great Hiking more

What?? No Elevator? 5/24/2005

I was surprised to see that there were no elevators or escalators to the top of the rock. Also, there was not a Starbucks anywhere to be found. When I go camping, I do not want to deal with being out in nature. Of course, I'm poking fun at those who want all the ""hook ups"" while they camp. Enchanted Rock is a great get away with appropriate facilities. Beware, though, you may want to consider staying somewhere else if you're used to having a mint placed on your pillow. Pros: Remoteness, Stars at night are, Big and Bright Cons: No Capuccino Machine, No manicure salon, No AC at campsites more

As a resident of the fine state of Washington, I'm amused that any campsite in Texas would be in the top 10 nationwide. Fire ants? Yea, they rock. We actually have trees up here, and even the occasional lake, but the less people know about our great campsites, the better. Rattlesnake wrangling is best left to the Wild Boyz. Best area in Texas 5/16/2005

If you love the Texas hill country Enchanted Rock is one of the crown jewels. It's a rustic place that has it's unique character. There's a easy 4 mile loop trail to see all sides of Enchanted Rock and hiking on Enchanted Rock allows you to make your own trail as you go to the top. And if you love BBQ Cooper's in Llano is a great place to stop on the way. ER is the second highest type rock formation next to Stone Mountain in GA. After visiting Stone Mountain I'm glad to see Texas got this one right by keeping it natural. Park is crowded in cooler months get there early because park will turn away people if it gets too crowded. more

Ideal 7/1/2004

Just got back from there, went car camping, nice spot. Obviously, someone has put a lot of thought into these campsites, with clean restrooms with showers nearby. Was interested in the negative comments. If you are not interested in nature, why bother going at all? Very relaxing, clean, relatively undisturbed by modern times, except for safety issues. We saw lots of animals, raccoons, ringtails, deer, various reptiles, mostly lizards and interesting birds. Fireants right in the campsite are a problem, but they respond quickly to antbait. Don't use anything that would be hazardous to the environment however, please. One of the kids found an arrowhead, which we turned in. Please comply with the rules about taking things out. Pros: Clean, Uncrowded, Beauty/Nature Cons: , Muddy with rain more

wonderful hiking/camping 6/28/2004

I don't understand the reviewer that complained that the park did not offer e-mail or cable services. That is not what this park is intended for. This is a beautiful park located in the scenic Texas hill country. If you want a wonderful, low level hiking experience or a nice, quite campsite, this is the park for you. Actually, there are some trails that offer pretty strenuous rock climbing, as well. If you want to watch tv and surf the net, you can easily do that at home. This is not an RV park, it is a natural habitat intended for nature lovers. This park does have a set limit of the number of people allowed to enter at a time, though. So, it is best to get to the park at 11am at the latest in order to help assure that you will be able to enter. more

As was pointed out by another reviewer, this isnt a place to go expecting all kinds of hookups. Its for camping, not RVing. None the less, Ive been twice, and find it /very/ nice. The climb is not hard at all, and the scenery is very pretty. You can literally see for miles in every direction. Also, at the top it is suprisingly cool even in the warmest weather due to constant winds that blow. There are also a number of interesting caves, but Id only recommend them if you know what you're doing, or are daring. Pros: View, Ease of Access, Inexpensive Cons: Cacti, Not many side maps more

Romantic Getaway 7/1/2003

I took my wife to this wonderful park on our first date, the pretense was to catch an awesome sunset from the top, we did and because the trip down can be quite dangerous, she HAD to hold my hand all the way down. 6 months later on March 11 1990 we were married atop the the truely ""Enchanted Rock"". We have enjoyed day trips as well as overnight campouts at this fantastic park, being preparred is being prudent, sunscreen, and plenty of H20. Pros: enchanting experience, Best views in Texas, Off the beaten path Cons: No hook ups 4 RV'ers more

Boring Bare Rock 8/24/2002

This park is about as dull as you can get. Don't believe the hype... a big round rock in the middle of nowhere is still just a big round rock. You can climb it, but the view is barely worth the effort. more

Enchanting Day Trip 7/26/2002

Enchanted rock is a great place to go for an outdoor activity! The large granite rock is a sight to behold on its own. Climbing it can be quite a chalenge, so bring lots of water. There is a small cave you can explore near the top, which is cool, but can be a bit dangerous ofter rains, so be cautious. I give Enchanted Rock two thumbs up! DISAGREE WITH GOOD RATING 7/20/2002

I disagree with the good rating of one of the Top 10 Camping Spots. I admit it has been a while since I was there as I had no reason to ever return, but it was a hike in place which was totally unacceptable. I was in a 36 foot motorcoach and there were no electric hookups, no water hookups, no sewer, no cable TV (hadn't bought the Dish at that time) and I found it totally unacceptable as a camping spot. The Enchanted Dome turned out to just be a big rock. Right down the road a bit however, at Fredericksburg is a city owned park called Lady Bird Park and it is just great. All the amenities including email access. Cons: No RV hookups, No email access more

Breathe Taking 6/1/2002

This is truly a hiking park for hikers. If you want a workout in all areas of your body, then I suggest you drive to this location. Don't forget to bring suntan-lotion. You'll be blown away from the breathe taking views and knocked down from the fearsome climbs. more
