Best

I have enjoyed a meal at El Gaucho several times. If my wallet was a tad better stuffed, I would eat here...

Worst

Although the steak was very good and the special treat of having the salad made right at the table was nice, the prices are over the top compared to many other fine dining places ...

Go somewhere else for steak 8/14/2004

My filet was cold, not even close to the the $51 price tag. I'd go to Ruth Chris for a filet, I will never go back to El Gaucho b/c of the low quality and high price. service was ok, nothing special more

Hidden Treasures... 6/30/2004

Yes, El Gaucho makes great steaks, but the other items on the menu are really what make this place shine. Try the Onion soup, the tableside ceasar, and the tableside bananas foster for truly delicious and reasonably priced food. Also for margarita lovers, try the 'twister' at the bar, you'll love it. Overall, its the smaller more inexpensive items that make this place shine, so take it easy on your wallet and eat cheap! Pros: Fantastic food, atmosphere, service Cons: , can be crowded more

Top 5 Restaurants I've Ever Been To 5/24/2004

This place is ideal for a special occasion or just fine dining. It is the nicest atmosphere I can imagine in a restaurant -- dimly lit, classic look, with a violin playing in the backround. Our dinner was wonderful, from the caesar salad tossed right in front of us, to the delicious steak and veal scallopine my wife and I ordered, to the tableside-prepared bananas foster for desert. A true classic. Pros: exceptional service, exquisite atmosphere, phenomenal cuisine more

A perfect dining experience 4/29/2004

El Gaucho epitomizes exactly what a perfect dining experience should be to me. The service is impecable. The food is cooked/grilled to perfection. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. They have a great wine list. The atmosphere is very classy, yet not too stuffy. Everything was wonderful from the moment we walked in the door to the moment we left. We had a few cocktails at our table before our salads came, and a few more before dinner. The timing of everything was fabulous. Loads of time in between each course and we always had exactly what we wanted when we wanted it. Pros: excellent service, amazing food, extensive wine list more

Save your $$$$$$$ 4/29/2004

We've been to El Gaucho twice and decided even though we can well afford it, we'd rather go to Ringside and have an excellent steak and drinks for less money and have more fun. We didn't think the steaks were any better here than at Ringside. The service is great, but found the dishes uneven (went with 12 people once and got to taste a lot of different offerings). But, it you don't mind dropping a few bucks for a mediocre meal, go for it! Pros: service more

The best in Northwest dining! 11/12/2003

If your looking for just a good steak and evening away from your microwave, visit many of the more than suitable restaurants such as the Ruth Chris's of the world! However if your looking for beef so incrediable it melts in your mouth, service so incomparable that the staff spends years training at other restaurants and then are hand picked to serve just you and your guest(our server was Chad and his knowlege of the menu and presentation was flawless!) not to mention a restaraunt who's management gives you the star treatment regardless of the size of your portfolio..combined with an atmosphere of class and romance that are usually reserved only for royalty and dignitaries than El Gaucho Argentinean Steak House is for you! The General Manager Franco and his incrediable staff of chefs and servers will give you and your guest a night you will never forget!!!!!!!! Pros: Steak, Service, Elite more

A True Classic 10/24/2003

My first visit to El Gaucho was by far my favorite Portland dining experience. We had the Chateaubriand, Caesar Salad and Bananas Foster. The entire meal along with the service was amazing, thats why I had to make a comment on rnmichelle's review. The fact is that El Gaucho is not cheap. This is one of those go all out or don't go at all situations. If you want a cheap steak go to the pancake house. Even though it wasn't the most economical meal I've ever had I didn't feel ripped off in the slightest. From the moment I arrived to the last bite it was worth every penny. Pros: Amazing Food, Excellent Service, Wonderful Music more

style, service, atmosphere 9/27/2003

My experiences at El Gaucho have been nothing but positive. From the bar and its charm to the incredible food and service; this place rocks! Busy 7 nights a week, and packed with a true cross-section of my beloved Portland. I have seen celebrities eating along side everyday guys like me. Go during NBA season and witness the roll call of stars that drop in late night. Throw in the live guitars and the best steak in town and it makes other steak places look amatuerish. Kick back with a cigar, chat with Sherwood or Franco and you're in the hands of professionals. If you haven't dropped in for a visit, you're missing the best show in town. Pros: intimate, sexy, excitng more

Great Expectations 6/24/2003

A $98 steak ordered med-rare and served med to med-well done. A $65 lobster tail overcooked so it required a steak knife to cut it. Great ceaser salad, good escargot, good potatoe. Vegetables not at all impressive (the parmesan cheese on the tomatoe tasted like Kraft). For a $360 meal for two the standard should be substantially higher and the quality should be beyond reproach. The high point of the meal was somewhat over priced bottle of wine. This is Portland and the standards seem to be lower than elsewhere in the world but this was close to larcency. Pros: atmosphere, prompt service, live music Cons: over priced wine, over priced food, novice cooks more

Great place 5/19/2003

Living in Seattle and not being able to come here enough is dissapointing. El Gaucho is head and shoulders above everything up here. Most importantly the service is incredible. Have never seen the snooty attitude that you tend to get in Seattle restaurants. Would strongly recommend more

Best Service & Steaks in Portland 3/3/2003

How City Search can rank Mortons and Ruth Chris Steakhouse above El Gauchos is beyond me. From the minute my fiancee and I were greeted by the valet, to exiting Broadway and Oak Street, our experience at El Gauchos far exceeded our expectation. From the excellent wine menu to the vast array of delicious menu items, the choices fit every budget and appetite. Our hostess (Emily) was fun, knowledgeable and responsive to our every need. The filet was second to none in the Northwest and the El Gaucho bake potato is unbelievable. El Gauchos Restaurant is ranked number one in our book. This restaurant is not only tailored for a romantic setting, but also, an excellent destination for entertaining any caliber executive business meeting! Pros: Food, Service, Value more

Great Supper Club! 3/1/2003

If you've never had a baseball sirlion, it is a must at El Gaucho. This restaraunt has a great supper club ambiance which includes salads and deserts prepared tableside. An overall great experience! more

as good as seattle 2/18/2003

Eaten at El Gaucho, Portland 5-6 times in last 2 years. Have taken family including 2-3 kids, friends and business associates. Always excellent and way above average service, fantastic wine list including some good meritages and as always great steak. Never a bad meal and the bar martinis are super. Great cigar lounge for after dinner and every employee is super. Food is as good as the sister restaurant in Seattle but the Seattle restaurant atmosphere is just a a bit more impressive. Pros: good martinis/wine, great steak/service Cons: pricey for portland more

This Was The Best! 2/18/2003

Well, I have been trying out some of Portland's restaurants, looking for some favorites. This will definitely be on my list. I went with some business acquaintances and the meal was delicious. The service was attentive and gracious. The atmosphere struck me as a little ""hotelly"" compared to some of the other chichi venues that I have tried, but then it is in a hotel....so it figures I guess. Honestly, I prefer an amazing meal, stellar service, and attention the the details that matter, rather than pay for rent on a room. El Gaucho is superb! Pros: Service, Fabulous Meal, Cigar Room more

Awesome meal for Business Travelers 2/18/2003

Excellent food and service. Ate there 3 times in a week. Highly recommended ! ! ! more

Best Steaks in town 1/24/2003

Cozy feel to the new Portland landmark.Enjoy dining in the bar because of its upbeat tempo.Amazing and friendly service>The tableside preparations are a real treat. Pros: Service, Food, cocktails Cons: alittle pricey more

Wow 1/6/2003

A group of us went for new year's eve dinner. From our cocktails in the bar to the complimentary fruit and cheese platter at the end, we were throughly amazed. Our dinners were fantastic and the service was absolutely impeccable. Prices are high, but steaks are accompanied by potato (extra in other high end steak houses) and are more than enough. Highly recommend the crab cakes and the table-side prepared caesar salad. Live musicians, top notch bartenders and friendly/attentive host staff add to the experience. If you are willing to pay for quality, this is worth the price! Pros: service, food, live music Cons: pay parking, expensive more

best of the best 12/22/2002

From the moment you walk in you receive the most professional, sincere service. The dry-aged Certified Angus Beef is amazing. Live Latin guitars, fabulous cocktail bar, and a secluded cigar lounge make this the most sought after spot in the city. Try it once and you will be a regular. Romantic, sophisticated, and absolutely the finest servicd in the city. Pros: ambience, service, food more

Best out there 11/22/2002

The steak here was amazing! Each bite continued to astound my wife and I. I have been to Nine in Vegas and the famous Smith & Wolenski's in New York but this by far is the steak house to eat it. Châteaux Briand for two is my recommendation! more
