Best

I have enjoyed a meal at El Gaucho several times. If my wallet was a tad better stuffed, I would eat here...

Worst

Although the steak was very good and the special treat of having the salad made right at the table was nice, the prices are over the top compared to many other fine dining places ...

Top Cow 10/7/2002

If you simply want the best steak in town, you have got to try this place ( and I have tried them all ). Great for that special ocassion or a real treat for visiting guests and clients. Super cigar lounge in the back. All this with impeccable service, no need to go anywhere else. ***** Pros: Quality, Service Cons: Price more

El GougeO 10/7/2002

The steak prices are so ridiculous, I just couldn't bring myself to order one. I can make my own just as well at home. The sweet potato side dish is something else though. Loved the caesar made table-side. Probably would not go back, too many other places to spend my money. Oh and the wine list was el-nothingo. more

NYC Opinion 8/23/2002

El Gaucho might make it as a contender in NYC, but it wouldn't be tops. While service was impeccable, the steak was mediocre. My medium rare ribeye was closer to medium, not very hot, and VERY salty. Sweet potato was a good side, scalloped potatoes were weak (could've been store bought), and asparagus was wimpy, under-cooked, and stringy. My companion's filet cooked medium was competent. Overall, not worth the admission. Go to the nearby Morton's. Pros: Service, Live Music Cons: Mediocre Steak, Overpriced, Too Dark more

The best in PDX, perhaps the US! 8/8/2002

What can be said. Consistantly the best steaks in the US. Gaucho belongs right there with Nine in Las Vegas/Chicago, Sparks and Peter Luger in NYC and the Met in Seattle. Absoutly the best total dining experience in PDX. Ask for Sherwood to make your Bananas Foster, there is no better person or desert to finish your evening! more

THE BEST! 8/2/2002

Service was excellent--we loved our waiter. He was very knowledgeable & helped us order things we'd like. Steak was THE BEST (an I'm always in search of great steak). We got a complimentary big serving bowl of fresh fruit and nuts to go with our port after dinner. Loved the live music from the bar. Great ambiance--definitely romantic! Bonus--saw ex-NFL & ex-NBA players dining nearby! Pros: excellent service, romantic, excellent food Cons: spendy! more

SteakLover 7/30/2002

From the tres chic atmosphere to the exquisite food, El Gaucho is certainly tops in the Portland market when you are looking for an experience in dining excellence of the red meat variety. While it's older sibling reigns supreme in Seattle, Portland's younger brother has brought Bridge Town into the upper echelon of steak houses. Pros: Valet parking, Flexible chef, Quiet more

Ask for Chad 7/7/2002

From the moment we entered this fine dining establishment we were lavished with excellent service and scrumptious fare. The table-side Ceaser and Banana's Foster are to die for. The atmosphere is romantic and the service is impeccable. Not a bad word to say for the entire evening. Make sure to be seated in Chad's section! Pros: Excellent Food, Excellent Service Cons: Expensive more

I've seen more gay men at a football gam 6/28/2002

#3 on best gaybar in portland? What? Are you kidding me? That place is straight (and old) as an arrow. The 700 club would be right at home there, eatin' some steak, and chillin' with the christian coalition. more

Great Bartenders 5/19/2002

I've actually only been to the bar at El Gaucho. Didn't matter who it was, but the martinis were perfect and the conversation fun and inviting. Love the dark rooms--it adds just enough swank. Hope to have dinner there soon, but the bar is just enough. more
