Best Mexican Food By Far 3/26/2010

The food is fantastic and the service is fine, they get the job done. I always order chili verde for dipping with the chips and salsa. Absolutely to die for! Definitely one of the best restaurants in all of the bay area. I have been going to El Burro for over 17 years and recently moved to central California, it was definitely the number one thing I missed. We try to make it back there once every couple months because it is just that good! :) Pros: Excellent Chili Verde and Salsa more

The food is appalling 8/14/2009

My wife and I ended up here after a mixup in coordination. The place looks nice enough and the outside dining area is comfortable on a warm night. I ordered a mexican steak, which comes with a salad. The salad was iceberg and cabbage from a bag served in a plastic bowl with a single slice of beet on top. The steak was served in strips with tomatoes, green peppers, onions, and cheese (all as advertised), but under a lake of gravy from a can. While the food was served quickly the gravy had cooled enough to encase the entire dish in a skin. The steak itself didn't taste too bad but only after giving each piece a few shakes to get rid of the horrible gravy. I'm still nauseous thinking about it.\r \r Don't go here. Drive a few miles and find a Tlaquepaque. If you're at Pruneridge and you must have Mexican food, go to Left At Albuquerque around the corner. There is also Taco Bravo, Unamas, and Baja Fresh all within walking distance. Pros: The wine bar next door hires good music Cons: The food is bad more

The manager in campbell is not good in customer 8/28/2008

we dont understand their service, before we able to purchased the thousand island dressing to go for a few times, Later the employee said they are not selling it, when asked why ? He said that the manger got so upset. . The manager said No one should sell it or the employee wil be terminated, the manager in campbell should not threatened the employee. They should also allow the customer to purchase the salad dressing because we like the taste of the dressing. more

WHY DOES THE KITCHEN HAVE ONE SPOON FOR RICE AND ONE FOR BEANS? 4/10/2008

First things first: The food is awesome! The steak fajita's and chili Colorado dishes are my favs. I can always count on large portions and piping ""hot"" food. The food might be ""hot"" yet the service sometimes leaves me ""cold"". For example, some servers kindly accommodate the customers requests, while others play by the book, lack personality, and almost fear the management. \r \r Now for the spoon controversy: It is almost impossible to request 1/2 portions on beans and 1/2 portions on rice for dishes that only have beans on the plate. Is it that too difficult to ask for? Apparently it is since the management has explained to us that there is only ""one"" spoon in the kitchen to measure out the beans and ""one"" spoon to measure out the rice for full amounts only!! It is such a poor excuse that it is simply laughable!! Sooooo, Lori (in corporate), if you are reading this: BUY MORE SPOONS in smaller sizes!! \r \r Whatever happened to the customer is always right? Not here....not even close! Pros: The food! Cons: The hot and cold service! more

El Burro Is Muy Delicioso ***** 10/21/2007

I've tried many Mexican restaurants over the last 25 years and I'm always wishing I had gone to EL BURRO instead. I always order the Chili Verde Burrito or Chili Releno. Both are consistently delicious, with just the right amount of heat for my not-so-bold taste buds. Their refried beans and rice are the best around (I sometimes order just these 2 side dishes w/sour cream - yum!). I have never found the service lacking and enjoy the outdoor seating (seasonal). The only downside is that it is in the Pruneyard Center and parking at peak meal times can be a problem, and you may have to wait awhile for a table. It is definitely worth the inconvenience, though. If I ever have to leave the Bay Area, this is one of the restaurants I will miss the most!!! more

Best Chili Colorado in town! 7/17/2007

I have been going to El Burro for at least 20 years. It is one of the best mexican places in the San Jose area. I highly recommend the chili colorado. It is excellent! It is made with lean cuts of beef and cooked perfectly. Parking can be a pain because it is located in the Pruneyard. The service is not that good, waiters work too many tables and seem to run around a lot. Pros: Good Food, Good portions, Fresh chips and Salsa Cons: Trouble Parking, Poor Service more

El Burro = El Stuffo 10/18/2006

If you're looking to stuff your face with Mexican Food, El Burro is the place to go. They offer Super Size Portions & Very Taste Food at very low price. Upon entering El Burro they ambiance of the place is amazing. Reminds me of walking into an old west movie in an old fashion spanish villa. The menu offer is good and offer all the traditional mexican favorites. Expect to pay between $5 - $8 for appitizers and about $13 for main courses. The food here is good mexican food but the portion sizes are HUGE. You can easily split one of their main dishes for two people and that will be plenty of food. Service here was good. Our waiter was very attenttive and never had to ask once for either refills or a fresh basket of chips. I can see how this place can get busy and we got here on a Saturday at 6PM and beat the dinner time rush. Since this is located at the Pruneyard parking can be pain. Overall looking forward to starving myself all day and coming back to El Burro to stuff my face. Pros: Good Food, Huge Portions, & Cheap Price Cons: Parking more

Go for the food, not the service 7/17/2006

I have been going to El Burro for years. The food is consistently good but the service is consistently poor. This is a busy restaurant and it seems they don't really care about customer service. One time I even asked to speak to the manager and, although he listened, he still didn't seem to get that they should ""try and please the customer"". \r \r My favorite entree is the chili colorado. The fajitas are also good but are only served with beans, no rice. Trying to get a little rice is a hassle unless you order a side dish! The reason is beacause ""that's the way it is on the menu"", said the manager. The salsa is good and not too spicy and the chips are usually fresh. \r \r They are always busy during peak times so expect a wait especially on weekends. They won't seat until everyone in the party has arrived. There is no take-out service unless ordered in person and only on the weekdays. Cons: Customer Service stinks more

Average food with lower than average service 7/7/2006

Great Mexican Food 5/29/2005

My Family and I have been coming here to El Burro for the last 17 years or so. The food is amazing and you also get great service. Its the best mexican food in the Bay Area! more

Bad drinks, Good food ... 5/27/2005

This is one of my favorite places because the food is so good. A large menu provides variety for even the pickiest eater. The entrees are all good and the free chips that accompany dinner are tasty (and the salsa is satisfactorily spicy). My only concern is that their margaritas taste like lemon-lime Gatorade. We asked for extra shots (which they charged us for) in our drinks which was a decent remedy. Pros: food, service Cons: long wait, crowded parking more

far away but worth it 3/10/2004

sometimes it's difficult for me, being a vegetarian & lactose intolerant, to find good mexican food other than a rice & bean burrito. but the veggie enchiladas at el burro are AMAZING -- i would pay good money to get the recipe for the sauce they use. the margaritas are some of the best i've had in the bay area. the service is not very good at all, but i just don't care. the food & drinks are just too good! Pros: margaritas, enchiladas, ambiance more

Grrrreat 12/11/2003

This is the only place I've found that has true tasting chili verde..haven't been able to find another place that compares. I've been the Newark and Sunnyvale locations and they are both equal. They have large proportions and I love the atmosphere. During the summer, you can sit outside and enjoy a delicious margarita. Pros: chili verde, ambiance more

10 years of excellent dinning 9/7/2003

i've been dinning at this restraunt for 10 years. Since the first time my husband took me to El Burro i have been in love with the food and the style of it. i highly recommend it for casual dinning or for those special dates!! Pros: large food protions, nice outdoor dinning, great food selection Cons: needs more parking more

AS GOOD AS IT GETS 8/14/2003

I have eaten at many Mexican restaurants in my time and this is far and away the best. Food is great. Atmosphere is excellent. Decor is outstanding. What more could you ask for. more

Delicioso! 9/17/2002

This is the BEST Mexican restaurant ever! I've visted many restaurants that claim to be ""mexican"" but this one tops all! The vast selection of enchilada plates is great.. so many to choose from. Even the chips and salsa are great! more

WONDERFUL! 9/13/2002

The best darned top shelf margarita's, chili relenos, and tamales in town in a traditional atmosphere. Believe it or not, try the crab and shrimp tostada -- it's fantastic! more

Ariba!Ariba! 7/1/2002

Outside of Mexido this is hands down one of the best mexican restaurants around. My family and i have been eating here for over 10 years and we are never disappointed. The service is great and the food even better. Pros: Inexpensive, large portions Cons: No Reservations taken, parking more
