Buena comida-MALA Onda 2/6/2011

I love the food at Dove Vivi. We have been getting their takeout for a couple years. But whenever we go in to eat there it is a 50/50 chance that we will get a helpful and polite server or if we will get an angry and un-patient one. We went in the other hight and were waiting for a while. We waited 3 times the time we were told which was OK but then they seated 2 tables that had come in after us, before us. The unfortunate part about it was that when we asked them about what had happened they were completely unwilling to say sorry at all. They acted with a ""we were lucky to be there"" attitude. All of us who were waiting for the table have worked in the restaurant industry for years. So we understand the difficulty of estimating a waiting time and frustration level of the job- but any and everyone should be ready to apologize when it is necessary. I really hope Dove Vivi can transfer some of the goodness of their pizza to the attitude of their servers/ hosts. more

No Olives! What? 12/30/2010

It's true! No olives...they don't use them,, or carry them! And unless you specify, no sauce! No sauce! But let's backup.... It was my first time there (a Dove Vivi virgin). When I ordered a pepperoni, mushroom and olive pizza, I was informed, ""we don't carry olives"". Not in a nice way, but in a, ""how dare he even ask for them!"". And no, I wasn't told that my pizza wouldn't have sauce (how dare I even think that?...a Mushroom and Pepperoni pizza with sauce?). And then there's the crust. It's not rolled in cornmeal....it IS cornmeal. Hard, strange, odd. Oh, and when I left, I asked if I could have a little sauce (how dare I?) for the leftovers. The server said, ""no problem, that will be $2""...and I passed. I spent $20 on a pizza with no olives, and no sauce. They got all the money they would get out of me. I should have just asked for my money back, but I didn't. Ps. It actually tasted much better cold! more

Yummy pizza! 9/5/2009

I had a half wild mushroom and my husband had a half pepperoni. Both pizzas were delicious. I'm not sure if they claim to be Chicago-style or if people just say it's Chicago-style because of the ""deep dish"" but this is NOT Chicago-style (we're from the CHI); however, this is as deep-dish are you're going to get in Portland and I'm pretty satisfied. When I have deep dish actual Gino's East, LouMalnati's or Giordano's, I end up feeling fat/bloated/greasy/nasty because all the loaded cheese; however at Dove ViVi's I left feeling full and still pretty healthy. We waited maybe 10 minutes at the ""bar,"" had a drink, seated outside. It rained briefly before being seated so we were able to enjoy the fresh rain aroma (um.. only Portlanders can enjoy this, huh?). Unfortunately, a couple of random guys started pestering us while we were waiting for food- but I won't get into that. Food was great! Pros: Tasty pizza, fresh ingredients, service, ample seating Cons: location more

Excellent 7/24/2009

The cornmeal crust is fantastic, hands down. For two people, a half pie and salad is plenty. The beet salad was delicious, generously portioned with purple goodness, blue cheese and texture-adding walnuts. The corn pizza with homemade sausage was some of the best pizza I've had in a long, long time. I left feeling satisfied minus that post delicious meal heaviness - as if I ate a healthy meal - which I did. How often does that happen with pizza? Finally, the service is warm and efficient (you can tell that this is place is a labor of love). So do yourself a favor, get a few friends together and go. Pros: Flavorful, healthy, friendly more

unique flavor 3/17/2009

I ordered the Coppa special: ham, provolone-I think, green olives and a garlic/spicy seasoning. It was very yummy, but too salty also the crust was a bit too hard for my little one. I liked that it was harder than most crusts, but wish it had been a little softer,, for both of our sakes. The flavors were all delicious. Thought it would've been good with some fresh tomato to cut the salt lick effect, it was yummy that way. A bummer to be charged for a tiny dish of diced tomato, but these days I guess a restaurant needs to be tight with these kinds of things.... Would be great if they offered a kids menu with a couple of food options and milk/juice or something like that. Lots of hungry families out there! Pros: Something different, hot and fresh, nice staff Cons: Crust is a little too hard, wish they had some kid options more

Best Damned Pizza I've had in years! 3/10/2009

I don't know if I was especially hungry or not but this pizza was the best damned pizza I've had in years. Wonderful crust, numerous topping choices and oh-so-tasty. My slice had delicious, smoky ham, mozarella, garlic, carmelized onions and greens. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The prices are reasonable and the service fine. I will definitely be back. more

The most delicious pizza on the planet. I take everyone here when they come visit me, especially if I am trying to entice them to move here. Yum! Pros: Everything! more

Love that cornmeal crust pizza! 12/18/2008

Remember the scene in When Harry met Sally and Sally had a fake ""O"" in the restaurant? Well, the first time I ate at Dovi Vivi I almost had one for real. I couldn't contain my enthusiasm or surprise by how incredibly delicious the food was. All of my friends that have experienced Dovi Vivi for the first time either went back for seconds in the same weekend, or once, in the same day! I also have a friend who has a pretty high wheat/gluten intolerance and we ate there because we thought it would be better for her stomach (it turns out that cornmeal crust still contains a high amount of wheat) but she still sacrifices it all for a little slice of cornmeal crust heaven. The vegetarian and vegan options are delicious! My favorite: the corn pizza. Pros: The pizza is really incredible Cons: It can get crowded, so get there early! more

I can still eat there 11/6/2008

... despite the crushing economic climate. They are so reasonably priced! And delicious! And although they don't tout it the corn was from sauvie island, and that the crust is made with olive oil (couldn't figure out why it was so remarkably buttery and sweet, so I had to ask our server yet another question about the ingredients- but she didn't even mind! Probably because she was proud of the answers.) I am always impressed by the quality. The ladies there are always so nice, the food is always so good, and I always leave in disbelief at how little our bill was. SO refreshing. Pros: low key, classy but relaxed, inexpensive, nice staff, unique in a good way more

It's good but not the best in portland 10/28/2008

Ate here the other night. Very clean except for the bathroom. Ambience is kinda ""cold"" but again clean and still cute. Didn't know what to expect from the pizza and was pleasantly surprised. It's different from the New York style I am use to eating but still very good. It's more Chicago style and I will agree with the others that the crust is amazing. The toppings were a little lacking flavor but I honestly think it's because the crust takes away from the toppings. Glad I tried it! Won't be a going back for a bit because I have to rotate my favorite pizza places and Apizza Scholls is next. Again the crust is out of this world but felt as if I gained a pound with every bite. Rich rich rich!!!!!! I think this place will be around for a long time. : ) more

Remember kustom pizza? Thank you dove vivi. 6/22/2008

I've eaten here several times and am quite satisfied with my experiences. The owners/employees are very nice and helpful, they make everything in house, the pie is unique to the neighborhood (and to portland) and is delicious. I love the new addition to the sidewalk seating, but am still bothered that my ""roasted peppers"" still have the skin on them making my slice metallic instead of sweet and savory. Pros: unique and tasty crust, friendly staff, sidewalk edition Cons: the little things more

The best pizza ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5/26/2008

I love this place. I will never go anywhere else for pizza again. The cornmeal crust is to die for, so buttery and crunchy. You can taste the fresh ingredients in every bite. I have never had such a wonderful pizza before. I have been there twice in a weeks time. I have told at least 10 people and will keep spreading the word. Do yourself a favor and go to Dove Vivi. So yummy!!! Another great Portland spot. Pros: Best pizza ever Cons: I want to eat it every day more

Delicious! 5/14/2008

This is some of Portland's BEST pizza. They make a mean pie, healthy and tasty salads that are perfectly dressed and insanely amazing chocolate chip cookies. Try the corn pizza with sausage, it seems to be one of their signatures pies. You can't go wrong here!\r \r more

The crust is amazing! 5/14/2008

Being new to Portland my boyfriend and I rely on citysearch a lot. After reading the other good reviews we decided to check Dove Vivi out. The first time we tried it we ate there, I felt a little out of place and awkward but the pizza was amazing. The extra crunch from the cornmeal is fantastic. We have ordered pizza from there several times since but usually just pick it up and bring it home. So far I love the corn, garlic and pesto the most! =) Pros: The crust more

Always amazing... but don't go in a hurry. 5/5/2008

Amazing pizza place run by amazing people. This secret is out of the bag so don't go if your on a time crunch, or call ahead for take out and go to the park to eat! The dining area is small and the place is popular, but very worth the wait if you can manage. the salads are consistently good and the pizza actually feels good to eat, not unhealthy or greasy. \r Love it! Pros: Food & the love in it Cons: too small for the number of people in love w/ it more

Fantastic place! 3/17/2008

We were skeptical about the unusual crust, but were totally won over by the friendly owners, the great music and beer, and above all, the top-notch ingredients and delicious pizza. The Quatro Formaggio is the best cheese pizza I've had in ages. The sturdy yet light crust holds up well under the tons of gooey cheese, and the chunky tomato sauce is put on top of the cheese (genius) so that the tomatoes get a bit roasted. This place is the perfect antidote to that annoying trend of ""artisan"" bakeries skimping out on the toppings. This pizza is very hearty and absolutely delicious! Pros: Great pizza, beer, music, and service Cons: Slightly uncomfortable benches more

bad service, good food. 3/7/2008

Took a couple of friends to Dove Vivi and got some of the worst service I?ve ever had. Our food took over an hour to get to our table. When the first 60 minutes had passed we politely asked if we were next for food. The waitress gave us a look of inconvenience left and came back with a snorty reply that are food would be made soon. When we went to pay she mumbled under her breath ?finally you?re paying.? We wouldn?t have been there for over an hour had our food shown up earlier or if we were told it would take our food almost an hour and a half to get one slice of pizza each (totaling in 4 slices) that sat cold in the display case. However, I must admit that the pizza was good. I gues the food quality evened out the service quality Pros: great food Cons: bad service more

Dove vivi. . . I LOVE YOU!!! 2/15/2008

They saved our lives!?! we had a terrible experience with American Dream, had three starving people, no pizza and decided to call Dove vivi! Thanks Am. Dream for screwing up! Because I am now a huge fan of this place and their SUPER friendly staff. So, I will give them my money for delicious pizza with a smile. If you have not tried their pizza call them up! You won't be sorry! more
