Ritz carlton very classy! My girlfriend and I love the chef here! more

Wonderful! 12/3/2010

We went here for a special occasion and cannot wait to return. It is expensive and should be reserved for special occasions, but I cannot imagine any reason why it would not more than fulfill any and all expectations: atmosphere, service, cuisine, wine list, comfort. All superb. The cocktail lounge is particularly welcoming if you'd like to enjoy drinks before dinner. more

Pricy but romantic 10/17/2007

Pricy but the lamb and oyster are not bad. Very romantic too. Reservation needed. Wine selection is great as well. more

Terrific! 9/25/2006

I came here with my husband on my 40th birthday. The food was wonderful, the service was super! It is probably the best upscale restaurant in the Bay Area. It worthes every penny. If you want to impress someone special on a special occasion, bring her to The Dining Room. Pros: food, service Cons: expensive parking more

The BEST Fine Dining in the Bay Area, without a doubt. 6/25/2006

I'm sorry to see the negative reviews a few people wrote about The Dining Room. I myself (and my fiance) have nothing but fabulous things to say about this favorite restaurant of ours. The service is top notch, they really make you feel like ""true royalties"" for a night. The only other restaurant in this class that has provided us with equally impeccable customer service is Masa's. Many other ones we've been to have either snobby attitudes, as if it's *your* honor to dine there, or they make you wait for 30-60 minutes even though you already have a reservation. At The Dining Room, there is no such unpleasant-ness. From the very first minute they greet you to the last minute of the night, you're truly *pampered*. The food is incredible. Well-balanced flavors, freshness you can taste, the chefs at The Dining Room are truly masters of fine cuisine. The atmosphere is elegant, refined, high class WITHOUT being uptight. Every dollar spent there is 110% worth it. We would go back again and again. Cons: Nothing! more

Save your money or go somewhere that's worth it. 4/9/2006

If I could sum it up in one word, it would be arrogant. The chef used obscure flavors and ingredients just for the sake of being ""creative,"" but rarely did they compliment each other. Sea urchin parfait drizzled with vanilla infused olive oil -- come on now. If you're going to flaunt your skills, at least create something that tastes the part. We all felt as if the food was there just to impress, but never actually delivered. I had the black bass with octopus raviolli, topped with squid shavings - rounding out the evening with 9 varieties of mediocre seafood. My fiance had the filet, which was itself nice, but then they had to go and top it with a dollup of bone marrow. She said it was like eating fried lard. If you're going to go somewhere this expensive, try Gary Danko, where the food fits the bill. Pros: Plates and silverware, Cushioned Chairs Cons: Food, Food, Food more

Good place to part with your cash 2/15/2006

You will spend a lot of money, so if you can accept that, you'll be in for an evening of joyful decadence, classic service, and excellent food. The Sommelier is fantastic and I heartily recommend the tasting menu with wine pairing (do not plan to drive home). Chef Seigel is fantastic (the old chef was great, but less inventive). It was a load of fun, especially if you can take over-the-top service with graceful amusement, because there is always someone at your shoulder. Start with some champagne or a glass of scotch from their impressive single malt selection. The only thing off was our amuse bouche, but everything else was perfect. Enjoy yourself here with your sweetie, we sure did. Pros: Romantic, Extreme Service, Cuisine Cons: Terribly Expensive more

Disappointed 11/23/2005

After reading/hearing so many rave reviews of the dining room, we were a bit disappointed with our own experience. We ordered the 6 course tasting menu, and while the food was quite good, I have paid far less for far better gourmet food. The service was unsurpassed and the Sommelier, Stephane, was very helpful. For $650, and the pedigree of the chef, I would have expected more from the food. Flavoring was very bland. Maybe we just hit an off day for the chef. Pros: Good atmosphere, Excellent service Cons: Average food, Average value more

This is tricky... 11/15/2005

I went to The Dining on Sat. night after deciding btwn. it and Campton Place and left with mixed feelings. The hosts were on top of their game of course and my girlfriend and I were greeted and seated as if we belonged there. Our head server was dissappointing. When I ordered the tasting menu and asked about wine pairing he acted as if that was almost unheard of; overly stuffy and very young hmm... The back waiter however was amazing and I only wish he was our waiter. We both had the 9 course tasting menu and while it was good nothing from the evening really sticks out to me from it. I'd say the most impressive thing was the wine that Stephan the very nice and informative Sommelior chose for our meal. In a nutshell the food was good but my server detracted from the $540 experience Pros: servive bar server, location , champagne to start Cons: atmoshpere, server more

Absolute Heaven! 11/7/2005

Absolutely amazing in every sense. I cannot express enough on how much we enjoyed ourselves, so much infact, my heart is pitter-pattering as I write. We ordered the Chef's tasting menu. Not only did Chef Ron Seigel give us a different item for each course, we rec'd additional courses & 3 additional amuse bouches, plus a tour of the kitchen. I also Also ordered wine pairings & rec'd an additional glass from the Sommelier. Not only was Laurent, our dining Captain a joy, so were the rest of the staff. To make it even more exciting -we had the joy of dining, not with but in the same room, as Mr. Fresh Prince of Bel Air, his wife, Mr. TopGun & his soon-to-be Mrs. We couldn't have experience a more pleasurable gastronomic delight. I feel honored to have been a patron. It was truly an amazing experience! Pros: Food, Service, Ambience Cons: Pricey- but worth it! more

All amazing 10/27/2005

This is what life is all about, amazing service, ambiance and food. The service is flawless and so is the sommelier with his pairings. I was not happy when Portay, the past chef, left but have been thrilled at everything Ron Seigel places at my table. As one other city searcher put it, ""Ron is the Bomb!"" Pros: Wine parings, service, Tasting menu more

Luxurious Dining 9/29/2005

I was highly impressed with my first visit. I splurged and did the 9 course tasting menu with wine pairings. Almost all the dishes was creative and showcased the chefs mastery. Highlights were the two fish dishes, Japanese butterfish and lobster, and the two meat dishes, quail and beef. There was also a luxurious foie gras in a peach vanilla butter sauce. The portions were surprisingly large compared to other tasting menus Ive had. The wine pairings were superb. The service was flawless. The atmosphere of the hotel and its lush dining room is a bit over the top, but I found it more amusing than bothersome. Pros: Tasting Menu, Service, Wine Pairings Cons: High Class Atmosphere more

Unfortunate. Just hotel fare, even at the Ritz. 8/22/2005

I took my fiancé here for birthday dinner since he had taken me to so many wonderful high end dining experiences. We tried the 9 course meal to experience the chef's artistry but would have been fine with a 3 course meal and happier. The food was only good & we often felt inundated with the tastes too competitive with one another. There was no creative flow to the meal. We don't feel the need to return. The service was EXCELLENT -absolutely attentive, perfect, & never ever overbearing. Our waiter was charming & amusing & suggested perfect wine choices suited to our taste. The problem here is name & diamond rating forms an expectation-should be world class & sadly still felt like hotel fare. If you have the bucks, check it out. If it's a stretch, there are better places for your special occasion dollars. Pros: Genteel, AMAZING service, wine list Cons: stuffy patrons, price high for only, 'fair' food more

Everything was not IN ITS PLACE 7/14/2005

Disappointing... Going in with high expectations, we left disappointed and confused. All was not amiss though, some dishes were executed flawlessly and the service was outstanding but when you go to the only five star restaurant in the city...YOU EXPECT PERFECTION!!! The cauliflower soup amuse~bouche was flat and flavorless & too thick undoubtedly because it was served luke warm. My lobster ravioli though was cooked perfectly & paired flawlessly with a coconut curry sauce, sauteed pearl onions & sugar snap peas. The Hot Foie Gras was good but the spiced cherries it was paired with were mediocre. What spice??? One guest ordered the ribeye, medium-rare but he was presented one that was barely medium...how can you make that mistake??? The list goes on but there was a light at the end of the tunnel...The Dessert!!! Absolutely amazing. From the Strawberries Cosmopolitan to the Lavendar Panna Cotta...yum, yum, yum. Pros: Service more

WOW. 3/26/2005

We're definitely foodies, and this place did not disappoint! Everything, from service to presentation to taste was fabulous. Timing of courses was perfect as well. We each ordered the 9-course tasting menu, which was different for each of us (so 18 different plates in all!)... every single one was tremendous. My personal favorite was the seared fois gras with huckleberry reduction. The final courses sent us over the edge, but not enough to say no to the unbelievable desserts. Plan on a 3-hour dinner. My only complaint... wish we weren't the last patrons at 11:45 on a Sat night. Pros: Service, Food, Everything Cons: Expensive more

Ron's the bomb 9/12/2004

I've never eaten here so I can't comment about how it compares to when Ron Siegel wasn't here. I just went for my birthday and had a wonderful time. We had a great waiter. A nice touch was that all the staff knew my last name and greeted me with ""Mr. ..""The 9 course tasting meal was fantastic with good timing. My girlfirend and I each got different courses so we got to share and enjoy 18 courses. They were all wonderful. Abalone carpachio, squab/sweetbread.. My girlfriend loved her wine pairing. Overall, one of the best places we've eaten at for a special occasion. Pros: Sevice, food more

Disappointing Valentines 2/22/2004

I have been to the Dining Room in the past, and it has blown me away, to the point of making Valentine reservations 3 months in advance. I was really looking forward to it, even at a $160/plate prix fixe. Unfortunately, the special Valentine menu was more of a novelty than a culinary achievement. The dishes were all meant to be eaten by hand, and were innovative, but the execution was lacking. For example, there was a ""Fish and Chips"" course where the fish was greasy and bland, and the sauce was nice but not amazing. The dessert was ""Chocolate Hamburger,"" which looked very cool, but was virtually inedible - a chocolate paste and raspberry sauce (the ""ketchup"") sandwiched between two dry buns. At $450 (without wine!) for two, it was a great disappointment. Pros: Romantic, Attentive service, Live harp music more

wonderful experience 1/12/2004

We had our anniversary dinner (1st french restaurant since we returned to the bay area) and it was an unforgettable experience! The Bay scallops were excellent and the duck was the juiciest I've tasted. The dessert were quite good (although we had higher expectations after such wonderful entrees!) Service was impeccable and I definitely recommend anyone to celebrate their most special occasions at the Ritz. Pros: Nice ambience, Good service, Great food more
