Great Location/ Poor Service 10/30/2011

I drove up from Del Mar on Saturday morning to purchase the signature, fresh sticky buns. Unfortunately the buns were stale and obviously from the previous day. When I notified the manager she was defensive and was reluctant to offer something baked that day. Unfortunately they did not have anything fresh but continued to sell their items as fresh. The employees did not look like they were happy and the managers attitude was terrible. The location is great but the service and vibe make this place not worthwhile. more

Great Service very personal and enjoyable enviornment 5/4/2009

I loved this resturaunt. There was a lady there was so sweet to me. I was sick when arriving at the resturaunt and she packed up my food for my which I ate when I got back home and may I say the breakfast burrito was AMAZING!!!! Never the less she got me some milk and when I left I was stopped by her and she wished me well. All my friends enjoyed the food and the enviornment. I am going back today and I would tell anyone else to do the same. Food is great lots of options, everyone is VERY friendly, and location is amazing. Price is also very resonable and we all know that is important right now! So quit reading this review and give it a try! Pros: The servers were so sweet Cons: They dont serve deep fried Zuchinni more

Poor service. 11/7/2008

My name is Joe and I just want to say that I almost never complain about service in restaurants. I know that in most places the employees work hard for their money and customers can be difficult, so I do not like to be picky. However, yesterday, Thursday 11/06/08 at about 9:00 a.m. I went to the Daily News Cafe with three friends. The guy who sat us was barely functioning. I am not making fun of him, maybe he had a medical problem, or he had done things in his life that he should not have. Two of us ordered coffee, and the other two ordered nothing at that point. He brought four coffees and a bowl of creamers. We told him that only two of us wanted coffee, so he took two away along with the bowl of creamers. The waitress corrected the problem and brought back the creamers. I ordered the California omelet and it was okay but nothing special. The coffee was horrible, it was very strong and bitter. The other guy thought so also, but he would not complain about it. I told the waitress the coffee was horrible and she ignored the comment. I told her again that something was wrong with it and she said to my friends, ""Where did this guy come from?"" Wow! I couldn't believe that the waitress didn't care at all about the quality of the product or her service skills. The normal response would have been, ""I,m sorry, I'll make some new coffee, no charge or I'll bring you something else."" She said nothing like that. I managed to drink about half a cup by diluting it with water and creamers but it was still horrible. Three times, we were offered to have our half filled cups filled and each time we put our hands over the cups; that should have been a clue! Nothing else was said about it and we were charged for the coffee. That was my first and last visit to the Daily News Cafe. Pros: Nice location, I liked the patio setting. Cons: Poor service. more

Used to be the best . . . . 10/2/2008

For several years now, we have visited this restaurant. And as our group is on vacation, are expectations relax a lot . . .saying this, I am not surprised by the other reviews. First, I have to say, it is either good or bad with the food and service over the last several years. Some times the food is excellent and the service is lousy. Sometimes the wait time on both have been horrid, and rarely they have both been excellent. Seems like over the last several years it has slid down hill. For a manager to talk to any customer, especially Joy R, in that manner should be fired on the spot. Yes, people are not always the easiest customers, however, to provide that type of services, and what they call food . . .is unexcusable. We are headed back to Carlsbad, and will give it one more try in hopes they have replaced that manager and have hired better cooks. Will let you know in November the outcome of the Daily News Cafe. Hope they have improved, used to be a big winner for breakfast and lunch with our large family Pros: Sitting outside Cons: Wait time, food, coffee, service (perhaps due to a bad manager) more

Great service, Great Location, Great Food 5/26/2008

I read the other reviews and was hesitant to check the place out; but I am glad I did. The service was great, as was the food. People must love it also, as the place was packed and everyone was in a great mood...very inviting people and the atmosphere was as well. The cinnamon rolls were ""World Famous"" and the Breakfast Croissant Sandwich was very good. I will most definetly be back! The staff was very accomodating and friendly. Pros: Service, Location, Food Cons: Parking more

The worst breakfast I have ever had. 12/25/2007

Me and my friend went one weekend for breakfast. It took over an hour to get our food, and when it finally came it was barely edible. My friend actually told our server that her food was terrible and the only thing they did was ask if she wanted a box. She of course, would have rather had it removed from the bill. Overall the WORST experience I have ever had at a restaurant. My friend and I were absolutely astounded. Pros: Location and Patio Seating Cons: Not very clean, poor food quality, terrible service more

Owner needs Customer Service Skills 7/29/2007

Hi, I am Joy Ridgway and am continuing the Ridgway saga of July 4th that Tricia started in the previous review. Let me say that my husband and I have been patronizing this restaurant for 15 years and had good experiences in the past. On one visit I accidentally left my camera there and they were nice enough to mail it back to me in Palm Desert so I did not have to make the 2 hour trip to retrieve it. Now back to the story...the owner walks over and I politely say ""Sir, someone in your kitchen is shedding hair"" as the owner cut me off before I could explain what had happened, he replied ""No one in my kitchen has hair and if a hair happened to be on top of your breakfast your server would have seen it since she has worked here several years and is extremely observant"". Although the waitress was so sweet and sympathetic, that still did not change the fact that she did not notice the 3"" black curly hair or the hockey puck egg yokes she placed before me. We told the owner that we had lost our appetite and wanted to end our 2 hour ordeal. He then implied in a very condescending tone that perhaps we were responsible for the hairs in both the drink and breakfast (like we were some kind of scam artist) and that he was not comping all of it. We had not even asked for anything at that time. Long story short, we paid for the hairless mimosas served to us and walked out wondering ""did this just happen?"". My review on the food. I don't know, I never got a bite. Pros: Location and ambience outside Cons: The owner needs a vacation. more

What an unacceptable experience! 7/16/2007

My Name is Tricia Ridgway and I am a fine dining server at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel in the restaurant, ""Ocean & Vine."" Please check us out! I would like to preface this review by saying I am an extremely forgiving person, especially when it is a major holiday in the food industry. Having said that my experience at the Daily News Cafe in Carlsbad, Ca. was nothing short of unacceptable! The place was naturally packed by many out of towners, who were hungry and waiting for a seat in this jumping joint. We were initially told by the hostess our wait would be 30 minutes. We were seated an hour and a half later. Our waitress was sweet, but extremely weeded. We ordered some drinks as we looked the menu over. When she came back to take our order we asked her for her opinion about the Hollaindaise sauce that comes with the Eggs Bennedict. She said it was great and offered us a sample. As nice as that was, it literally tasted like cream of chicken soup. So we decided not to order that. I ordered the Juevos Rancheros, which she said I would love the sauce on that. My Mom ordered Eggs over Medium and potatoes, and our friend ordered pancakes. She said, I hope the syrup is atleast warm and the butter is soft. While waiting over 45 minutes to recieve this elaborate menu we have ordered. Lol! I had discovered at the bottom of my one and only Bloody Mary a small black hair that was resting in the ice. I called over the server and she of course took it right away. Finally, our food arrived. It looked like someone had taken an entire bottle of Pace Picante Salsa and dumped it on top of my Juevos Rancheros. Our Friend's syrup was cold and the butter hard as a rock. My Mom's eggs were like hockey pucks, but she decided not to say anything.... until we all saw it! NOT AGAIN! The longest black curly hair I have ever seen resting on top of her potatoes. NOOOoooo!!! THe ""Owner"" is now sent over. To Be Continued.... Pros: cheap but not qulatiy food. You get what you pay for. Cons: Unacceptable service and ownership. more
