Great malts, sandwiches, and recently voted best BLT sandwich with a full POUND of bacon on it. If you like an old fashioned atmosphere and some freshly made chocolates and fudge candies, this a great place. Tiny seating area and sometimes a lunch wait to get seated. Not for snobs thats for sure. more

WOW!! 8/11/2011

This was another place we decided to visit as a result of Man Vs. Food. The building is small and you need to get there before the lunch rush or you will be waiting in line outside. The ere of nostalgia is rampant and gives you a sense of home. The deserts are tempting, but do yourself a favor and order a sandwich WITH your milkshake. I ordered the beef and cheddar sandwich and my wife ordered the turkey, bacon club sandwich. We were both VERY impressed with the amount of toppings on the sandwiches, but my wife more

Just Ok.. 5/10/2011

My husband and I ate here a few weeks ago for the first time. They came highly recommended so since we were down town, we thought we would try it. First was the waitress that was barely audible and mumbled so you could not understand anything that she said. Then the food came which was just ok..not bad but not really good. The Malts and Shakes are very good though. We also bought candy which was recommended to us, which again was just ok and not worth what we paid for it. The waitress brought our food and never came back to check on us until she put the check down..the place is very small so its not like she had too many other people to take care of. It seemed to us that since they are a St.Louis Icon and thats what drws people in that customer service is not a priority. We will go back for Malts or shakes but that is it. more

an icon! 5/9/2011

I'd have to say I've heard just about everyone rave about the malts and shakes...we had someone from work pick up carryout 1 time and I got their grilled cheese and i'd have the say-best grilled cheese i've had in a long time-maybe ever more

Excellent Malts, average food 1/8/2011

This is the place you go for malts, shakes and other ice cream. They have average food but I go for the shakes. HERE IS SOME ADVICE - 2 Shakes is enough for 4 People. more

Horrible to paying customers! Not wise in today's economy! 2/17/2009

An order was called in to a male worker for a pick-up time of 11:45am. The order wasn't ready until 12:15pm. Our union carpenters can only take lunch from 12-12:30pm so they had 10 minutes to eat their lunch. The two fruit salad sundaes and an order of chips were not included. When we called, we spoke to a man again & told him about the order missing a few items. He said he went over the order on the phone so if it?s not on the receipt than it wasn?t placed. We told him we?re sure we placed the order for these items and he asked if we were calling him a liar, and then proceeded to tell us not to order from them again and then hung up on our co-worker. She was very shocked! I checked the receipt and we were not charged for the fruit salad sundaes but we were charged .60 for the chips (open food item-on ticket). I am the person who placed the order and I circle the items as they?re read back to me so that I am sure they?ve been accounted for, as I am held responsible if somebody does not receive their lunch. The items were circled, and when the man read the order back to me, he did not say the single order of chips, so I remember having to confirm that he had chips written down, and then he said yes, though again, we did not receive them. I feel as a small-business owner in today?s rough economy, such rude behavior from an employee should definitely be brought to their attention. I honestly hope it was not an owner who treated his customer in such an unprofessional way. We spent roughly $200.00 per mo. w/them. The customer may or may not always be right, but the customer is always the customer, and to be treated in such a manner is uncalled for. We sent a letter to the three owners letting them know about our horrible experience, but nobody replied. Needless to say, we haven't ordered from them since. more

rude 2/10/2009

The person who answered the phone had NO patience and or didn't want to take the time to help me. He kept telling me you have to come down here and look for yourself i don't know. All I needed was a total amount on some chocolates How Hard Is That?>! more

THIS IS THE BEST PLACE IN TOWN FOR CANDY AND ICE CREAM 7/7/2008

I grew up in Univiersity city and lived in North County for 12 years. This has been a favorite place of mine for years. Their food is spectacular and their Ice Cream shakes are superb. If you haven't been, get there soon. You don't know what you are missing. Pros: Best food in town and the Ice Cream (shakes and sundaes) are to die for. Cons: Parking is limited and there is a little wait, but worth waiting for. GO, GO. more

I love Crown Candy 4/4/2008

I've worked at Crown Candy for over 3 years and I still love it without a doubt. It has great food, ice cream, and candy and I wouldn't replace it for the world. Many people are afraid of the neighborhood but I can honestly say, it's not a scary place to go and you do not have to worry about going after dark. It is a beautiful place and all of the staff are incredible people. more

AWESOME FOOD, AWESOME CUSTOMER SERVICE, AWESOME ATMOSPHERE!!!!! 8/19/2007

Want the best BLT you will EVER have??? Do ya LOVE shakes, malts, and ice cream served the old fashioned way? WANT EXCELLENT FOOD CHEAP??? Wanna experience GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE??? If you said yes to any of the above questions, or if you just want to see what an old time corner store/soda shop is like, then you've gotta check out Crown Candy Kitchen!!! It's been around since 1913 so you know it's gotta be awesome! My dad used to go here when he was a kid (God rest his soul) & man would he smile when we'd go there - always had a story for us (I sure do miss him). I can't even count how many friends and co-workers I've taken there over the years who are now just as addicted as I am and who are now taking their family and friends! Oh, and did I mention that they have candy? Word of warning though - If you go around Easter, plan to stand in line cause they are PACKED but it's worth the wait! And, it's easy to get to! Right off of Hwy. 70 (take St. Louis Avenue & go right if you're coming from the West or take Madison & make a left at the second stop sign if your coming from the East - either way it's two blocks down on the right hand side). And, it's close to downtown so you can go on your lunch hour! Some people think the neighborhood is a tad shady but believe me, IT IS SAFE! The neighborhood is coming back and the cops are there so don't be speeding! Trust me, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!! more

Not a place for dieters! 5/31/2007

We love Crown Candy Kitchen! The Johnny Rabbit malt is fabulous! I feel that it's a little heavy on the nutmeg, I order mine without. Seems to cover the flavor of the fresh bananas. Other than that, its wonderful. The chocolate and candy selections are delicious also! The food is good, but not as extraordinary as the dessert items. They have fresh and tasty egg salad! Definately my fave! Pros: Great desserts! Cons: Not the best neighborhood, parking can be limited. more

Good dessert, eh food 2/3/2007

Dissapointed at the lack of a burger, but that's not the restaurant's fault. I just thought a good burger & fries with a milkshake is the foundation of any respectable soda joint. Replacement BLT was fine, but nothing spectacular. Mostly a bacon sanwich, little tomato or lettuce. The shake was good and I appreciate the existence of well crafted homemade ice cream in this increasingly corporate world. Sure candy would be likewise delectable. Overall, good place to stop in for sweets if you're in the area, but otherwise the trek to the restaurant - seemingly surrounded by little- is a haul. Pros: Good, homemade ice cream in a place w/ an old time feel Cons: food is very ordinary more

Wow what a find and they have ice cream 11/21/2006

I grew up in the St. Louis area and sadly I am 34 years old and just discovered Crown Candy. I took my boyfriend there for something different than the norm. We had to wait about 30 minutes to get seated but if you have the time it is worth the wait! There is so much to look at. They have the little individual jukeboxes on each table, unfortunately they don't work but still neat to look at. The grilled cheese, roast beef and cheese and chicken sandwiches are all good so I imagine that everything else is too. Save room for dessert even if it just a scoop of the daily flavor. The next weekend I took my grandma there for lunch and she loved all of the memorabilia. A walk down memory lane. Pros: great ambiance and tons of stuff to look at. ICE CREAM ! Cons: bit of a wait to get seated. not good for large groups more

Step Back in Time 11/1/2006

Not the greatest area of St. Louis, but should this place ever disappear it will be a great loss to the city. I grew up taking an annual family trip to the city every March to load up on Easter candy and an old-fashioned malt shop meal at Crown Candy. It just wouldn't be Easter without their amazing chocolate! I have since moved 3 states away and still make the annual trek as often as possible. Everyone should visit this place at least once in their life (but you'll be back). The ice cream sundae's are to die for!!! Pros: Nostalgia, ice cream, CHOCOLATE Cons: Small, cramped and often a line (which means popular) more
