I agree with what everyone wrote about service 'Chapeau' to the reviewer who wrote "" no eclair for you!"" LOL That was 'sur la mouche""! I am European, did my MA in France, and ...

NO ECLAIR FOR YOU! (Owner is getting too arrogant) 1/14/2008

Recently I went to Croissant Brioche French Bakery & Cafe for a quick bite. I purchased an eclair at 6:30 PM (there was no line there) and paid with my regular credit card. The owner said: ""I need cash since this is less than $5!"". I told him that I prefer paying for everything with Credit Card since it keeps my expenses on one statement. Also, I was upset with his frowned face and the impolite way that he approached it. He was not happy and made it clear with his demeaning demeanor while running my card. I explained to him that there is no need to be rude to the customer, and he said that ""If the customers are not happy, they need to purchase their 'eclair' somewhere else!"" I understand that at the end of the day, the owner may have had a rough day and he was not his regular himself. However, I recommend that as clients visit the place, they remind the owner that doing business in the US does entitle the customers to some rights and a level of courtesy and civility. It is just the polite thing to do in a civil society. I felt like I am in an episode of Seinfeld and I was expecting the owner to bark at me and say ""NO ECLAIR FOR YOU!"" There are many great cafe and pastry shops in the Rice Village, and the taste of bad service lasts much longer than any sweet pastries that this place may have. Cons: Poor service by the owner more

Bad customer service 11/21/2007

I did not have a good experience at this place, staff were flakey and unattentive. I ordered a drink and quiche - after waiting 20 minutes I inquired where my food and drink was - and the order had never been placed - staff stood around talking and were not attentive to there job. Very badly run! Cons: Service and staff more

I wish i knew about this place sooner! 9/15/2007

A friend suggested a thai restaurant called patu in the village but the long wait and unorganized seating system forced us to find an alternative and Ruggle's was the alternative suggestion. After the amazing experience we wondered why Ruggle's was not the first suggestion! The staff was friendly despite being very busy, the pastas, sandwiches, salads and soups were delicious and well balanced, and the desserts, everything has been said already but personally i think they are beyond words! White chocolate bread pudding is a must! but we had a difficult time choosing and it was really tempting to try to stuff more into out overstuffed bellies... we will definitely be back to sample all the other menu items! Suggestion take a big group, order all different entrees and just pass the dishes around! more

best food and desserts 7/19/2007

I have been going to Ruggles Cafe Bakrey ever sience it opened. It is defiantly my favorite restaurant in Houston. I always stop by on my way to work and pick up lunch. They have the best salads and pastas and the absolute best desserts! My family loves going there! We go at least 2 times a week. My kids and husband love it! I always get the goat cheese salad with a cup of the tomato basil soup. My husband usually gets the ranch chicken sandwich with the amazing sweet potatoe fries. But recently my husband has ordered some of the items that were just added to the menu such as the shrimp salad and the Tai salad. My kids love Ruggles just as much as we do they always get the pizza dippers with a side of apple sauce with cinnamon chips. AND DID I SAY THAT THE DESSERTS WERE THE BEST! Don?t get to full with the food because you absolutely have to save room for the best desserts! My family always a variety and we share ( we usually get the white chocolate bred pudding and the domino cake.) WE LOVE RUGGLES BAKREY! Pros: The food, the desserts, the atmosphere more

Best in the Village 4/17/2007

I was a first time visitor to Ruggles Cafe with a group of friends last weekend. The manager saw our group come in and immediately helped us pull together a couple of tables. We placed our orders at the counter, the staff was so friendly and patient while we drooled at all of the desserts in several cases. Our food was ready much quicker than expected. I had an incredible salmon special, others ordered sandwiches and salads from the menu. Portions are big so be prepared. Our food was so good that everyone in our group was happy. We decided to stay a little longer and ordered a few desserts and shared them all. The desserts were to die for! Two thumbs up Ruggles. You made our night. We will definately be back again! Pros: Big portions of great food! Desserts to die for! Cons: They closed at 11pm. more

As Bad As It Can Get !!!!!!!!!!!! 3/23/2007

My wife and I have been dining out almost every day lately, so Ruggles cafe bakery was one of our choices and to make a long story short, we have been disappointed in the past few restarants and Ruggles was NO exception . From the service to the quality of the food and not to mention the HIGH PRICE we paid for cold nasty food with an attitude. Pros: Ruggles name Cons: Everything else more

Good atmosphere but the food falls short 2/24/2007

My wife and I were excited to try out Ruggles after hearing a lot about it. Unfortunately, we were not impressed. The food is overpriced. After we placed our order, we watched what turned out to be our food sit underneath the hot lamps for about 5 minutes before we were paged. The food itself was alright. The chicken salad is basically chicken and lots of mayo. I'd stick to the coffee and the pastries. Pros: Location, Atmosphere, Bakery Cons: Overpriced, sub-par food more

Don't go for food! 1/18/2007

The desserts look good, and Ruggles seems like a good place to grab a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or if you desire, a teapot. In fact they have the tea in bulk jars kept airtight, which is impressive as long as all that tea and so little ordering doesn't mean stale tea. Unfortunately my visit to Ruggles revolved around food. The prices are outrageous and the food quality is not good. For the price and hype we were expecting awesome food and huge portions. We were disappointed. I got the worst Rueben of my life. First of all, who makes a Rueben with mozzarella instead of Swiss? I asked for Swiss, but they made the sandwich with mozz anyway. They only grilled one side of the sandwich, so that it was slightly toasty on the top and actually soggy on the bottom. Miniscule, drenched in 1000 Island Dressing and served with an only ample amount of fries. It's a sandwich! How can you mess that up? My friends were similarly disappointed with their meals. For a price that's higher than any place in Houston and just about any place in NYC, the quality is dismal. Maybe you would go here to study or something... Pros: Soccer moms, apparently Cons: Expensive with lousy food more

Mediocrity in a sea of excellence 11/26/2006

My family and I had not visitied Ruggles Cafe in quite some time - our recent visit reminded us why we have stayed away. Ruggles is located in the Rice Village amidst many fine restaurants and fun shops. It seems that this restaurant apparently survives on its name and/or reputation alone - it's one of those places that people just go because someone said they should. While the desserts look pretty good, I found that the food is at best mediocre. And while that can be acceptable if there are other outstanding qualities or novel items on tap (i.e., Rainforest Cafe or Chuck E. Cheese), none of it works if customer service is poor. And on my last visit, service was absolutely pathetic. From the ordering experience to the getting the food experience to the talking to the manager experiece, Ruggles failed every test. Ruggles appears to be popular, but as I said before, I don't know why anyone would choose this spot when there are so many other, much better places to go (walk a block in any direction and you'll see what I mean). more

Great food 11/20/2006

I have been several times to this Ruggles now and have not been disappointed at all. Every single thing I have tried on their menu has been excellent. Last time I was there, a line to the door was prominent for the entire evening....proof, in my opinion, that this place has great food! Pros: excellent food, excellent dessert Cons: you might have to wait in a line for a bit more

Nice joint 11/16/2006

Friends have told me for years to go here and my husband and I finally got here last week. We took the advise of friends and got sandwichs and soup and shared. The portions are huge. We ordered one roast beef sandwich and a bowl of black bean soup. The sandwich was wonderful. The only down side was the dining area was a little dirty. It could of just been a busy day so I will go back again. Pros: great soups Cons: parking lot small more

Great for Dates! 10/26/2006

This is one of my more favorite places to take a date, girlfriend or even wife (even though I haven't gotten one of those yet, but I plan on it.) Great chocolate cake... THE BEST!!! more

Best Pastries in Town 3/14/2006

I live about three streets up from Croissant Brioche, and take my kids there every Saturday morning. The apple danish is the best in town, along wiht outstanding quiche (all at a very low price) Not too crowded. Pros: Pastries, Ambience, Quiche Cons: Small Dining Room more

great food and desserts!!! 8/21/2005

the food is great- i like the tomato basil soup, potato wedges and the alfredo, my friends like the wraps and hamburgers. the desserts are the stars at this place, order the white chocolate bread pudding!!! beautiful presentation at a laid-back place. Pros: desserts Cons: no order waiters more

Yum 6/19/2005

I usually only come here for one thing: white-chocolate bread pudding. Those are the best! Never had it anywhere else. I have dined on their lunch/dinner menu, and they're satisfying; nothing real impressive, just normal food, but their desserts are delicious!! Pros: Dessert, Inexpensive more

Everything I great.... except the dessert? 4/10/2005

I eat here at least once a month, their trio salad is delicious. Their burgers are really good and on awesome buns. Their daily specials are also usually very good. The only thing I have learned is that the dessert is pretty mediocre, especially for what you pay. I don't know if they make it too far ahead, or what, but the cakes I have tried have all been dry, and the tart that I gave a chance was soggy! The cookies are good though and the food makes it worth it, just have dessert elsewhere - or skip it! Pros: Good Food, Nice Patio Cons: Dry Cake more

Food here is tasty and decadent 3/19/2005

This place is great for all types of food. They have awesome desserts! If you need a dessert, this is the place for you! They have a chocolate and peanut butter mini-pie that is out of this world. They also have cheesecakes, cookies, brownies, etc. Their burgers are yummy, their soups soothing. I don't drink coffee so I can't speak on that topic. more
