#700 - Jonas Lie (American, 1880-1940) Manhattan\r \r \r Sgn. Lower right, Jonas Lie. Oil/canvas.\r \r \r Jonas Lie was a Norwegian-born artist who received great acclaim for his luminous renderings of New York City. Influenced by Monet’s use of color and light, his unique merging of Impressionism, with a bold, painterly realism, was admired for its potency and vigor. In 1905, three of Lie’s works were exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy in the company of fellow artists Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, William Merritt Chase, and Mary Cassatt. Lie was also actively involved in mounting the famous 1913 Armory Show, where four of his own paintings were shown. Lie was quoted as saying, “Art is not an emotional expression; it is a controlled expression of an emotion.” \r \r This painting of Manhattan, by Jonas Lie, by descent of Emily Sibley Watson, founder of The Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY. She was the daughter and daughter-in-law of Western Union co-founders Hiram Sibley & Don A more

GENESEO, N.Y. – A bold original gouache painting by the renowned American artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976), titled Loops Filled In, signed lower right and dated (1972), measuring 23 inches by 31 inches, sold for $78,200 at the annual Winter Fine Art & Antiques Auction held March 29th by Cottone Auctions, in the firm’s gallery located at 120 Court Street in Geneseo.\r \r The painting was one of two artworks that brought identical selling prices. The other was a color linocut on Arches paper by Pablo Picasso (Sp., 1881-1973), titled Faunes et Chevre. The work was numbered in pencil lower left (26/50) and on the reverse. Like the Calder, it also fetched $78,200. In all, just under 500 lots came up for bid in an auction that grossed about $1.5 million.\r \r It was a busy day for Cottone Auctions’ staff, which had to tend to a packed house of around 250 people in the gallery, as well as nearly 3,000 approved online bidders (who participated through LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.co more

By far the best auctioneer you will ever find. I am from Ohio, and have had them sell a number of items from my families estate. They market the items globally, and have a very good following. The prices realized were either right on the money, or better! I will continue to use them for all my auction and appraisal needs. The came to Ohio and gave me both written and verbal appraisals, and were happy to take items back to their auction house in NY. One painting they sold for me brought twice the estimate, and was purchased by a collector in Singapore. I could have never been able to find that buyer on my own. I would highly recommend Matt and Sam for a single item or a full estate. more

Great If You Like Being Threatened With Bodily Harm 9/23/2012

Truly the most horrible business I have ever dealt with in my entire life. They threatened me, their actual client, with bodily harm when I came to retrieve my items from them. Communication was nonexistent unless you continued to ask for updates. They actually took our items out of the auction we agreed upon and placed them in some other sale on another date without any authorization or permission whatsoever. Seemingly polite initially they turned icy cold when they realized that their perception of value of our items (they are the experts supposedly) was far lower than they imagined. In the end they refused to return a call or answer an email while our items were several hundred miles away their disposition completely unknown to us. When I told Sam Cottone that I was not pleased and that no one had ever treated me worse as a client his only reaction was to threaten me with a hired tubby goon who claimed to be a law enforcement officer of dubious quality. That was it. No apology. No e more
