GENESEO, N.Y. – A bold original gouache painting by the renowned American artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976), titled Loops Filled In, signed lower right and dated (1972), measuring 23 inches by 31 inches, sold for $78,200 at the annual Winter Fine Art & Antiques Auction held March 29th by Cottone Auctions, in the firm’s gallery located at 120 Court Street in Geneseo.\r

The painting was one of two artworks that brought identical selling prices. The other was a color linocut on Arches paper by Pablo Picasso (Sp., 1881-1973), titled Faunes et Chevre. The work was numbered in pencil lower left (26/50) and on the reverse. Like the Calder, it also fetched $78,200. In all, just under 500 lots came up for bid in an auction that grossed about $1.5 million.\r
