#700 - Jonas Lie (American, 1880-1940) Manhattan\r \r \r Sgn. Lower right, Jonas Lie. Oil/canvas.\r \r \r Jonas Lie was a Norwegian-born artist who received great acclaim for his luminous renderings of New York City. Influenced by Monet’s use of color and light, his unique merging of Impressionism, with a bold, painterly realism, was admired for its potency and vigor. In 1905, three of Lie’s works were exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy in the company of fellow artists Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, William Merritt Chase, and Mary Cassatt. Lie was also actively involved in mounting the famous 1913 Armory Show, where four of his own paintings were shown.
