Changed Owners = 1 Star establishment 10/15/2011

The new owners are No Good. When they got the place, they eliminated everyone's benefits, slashed wages, and then did the classic ""brain-drain and fire"" move. All the cool people were suddenly gone, along with the eclectic music and fun atmosphere. * My favorite is that the day after the nearby cafe burned down, these guys Raised Prices!! * It's the most expensive coffee in the Haight. Honestly, despite being a somewhat regular customer (at least after the good cafe burned to the ground), I was never once warmly greeted, and although the woman (I assume sister) would be somewhat cordial, there's something genuinely chemically wrong with the guy. He doesn't blink. He doesn't smile. There's no emotion. He obviously doesn't care about the products, the store or the customers. There's something wrong going on here, and it looks like a lot other recent reviewers agree. more

Great Coffeehouse Feel 9/28/2006

Coffee to the People really nails the coffeehouse environment. Bustling on the weekends and mornings, a littel quieter mid-week, this coffeehouse does real homage to the hey-days of the Haight-Ashbury without faking a hippy vibe for the tourists. The only cafe I've ever been to with a community action wall that gives information about local politics. They seem very committed to their ideals and the community, and, just as important, it is fun to be there. Pros: Overall environment, nice staff, good coffee and food Cons: Nope more

Really good coffee 2/20/2006

Excellent cafe with really good fair trade organic coffee and espresso. Very extensive tea menu. Ginormous sandwiches made with really good meat. They also have vegetarian and vegan sandwiches and pastries but i didnt try those - they looked good though. Good energy and nice service. Nice community place. Highly recommended. Pros: Great coffee, Ginormous sandwiches, Good service more

Fair trade and delicious 12/14/2005

The Citysearch review says Coffee to the People has ""free trade,"" but it really has ""fair trade,"" NOT free trade. What's the diff? Free trade is get the lowest price possible. FAIR trade is pay third world countries a fair price for their coffee to increase their standard of living instead of taking advantage of them by getting the lowest price. Coffee to the People is all about the fair trade. All of their coffee is fair trade. And organic. And it is GOOD. It is a nice place to hang out, too. Pros: FAIR TRADE, organic, great coffee more

Great Cafe Experience 12/1/2005

I wandered over to the Haight the other day and found a ""new"" cafe (at least it wasn't there last time I was in the Haight about a year ago). I've never been happy with any cafes over in the Haight but this one was excellent. The cafe was clean, roomy, comfortable, and the staff efficient and very nice. The latte I ordered had great flavor, not the typical ""Italian roast"" thing they do in North Beach but kind of complex and very good. The atmosphere was vibrant but not too loud. Instead of the usual tourist trap, the cafe was more geared toward the neighborhood, which I think helped its overall feel. It might even convince me to visit Haight again soon. more

What I like in a coffeehouse 11/17/2005

What do you want out of a coffeehouse? 1. Great coffee and espresso - they have it. 2. Enough room to chill out - they have plenty. 3. Comfort - they have lots of that - nice lighting, comfortable big chairs and leather couches. 4. Free wireless - check. 5. Nice staff - no attitude, and very friendly. 6. Unique character - like a coffeehouse AND a mini-museum to leaders in civil rights and peace movements, with a free library. 7. Good crowd 8. Events - They have free open mike every Friday night and other music events. It is the whole package of what I look for in a coffeehouse, and things I never even thought of but that are cool too. Really happy I found this place. Pros: great espresso, great service, great atomsphere more

Totally amazing coffeehouse. 11/17/2005

The coffee is super fresh and tastes great. They have their own roasts and I had one called Peace and Love and it was bold but not bitter at all. My buddy had a double cap and I didn't try it but it looked good and he said it was the best he had in a long time. I had almost given up on coffee in the Haight but I'm definitely coming back for more of this. The decor was unique, too. You can tell these people are the real deal because instead of throwing up a bunch of lame hippy posters they put up the real inspirational leaders in civil rights and peace. The bumper sticker wallw as a cool idea, too. Pros: Fresh coffee, Nice staff, Cool atmosphere more

Coffee to the Peeps is Sf's best 11/15/2005

This is the BEST coffee I have had in San Francisco and maybe anywhere. I can't think of anywhere better. Strong, smooth, not bitter but packs a punch. Lots of room, political books, posters, quotes. Comfortable and clean. Pros: Strong coffee, cool staff more

Amazing Hippy Cafe 11/7/2005

They talk the talk, and they walk the walk. The friendly, hip baristas at Coffee to the People serve up artisan, organic and fair trade espresso, vegan pastries, and other delicious items. The cafe is a testament to the best hippy values from the Haight-Ashbury in the 1960s: peace, love, equality, and freedom of expression. You can't miss it. You walk in and are surrounded by it: posters, slogans, quotes, books in their cool library, even the tables shout it out. And to go with it, the owners serve only fair trade and organic coffee and tea AND they give a portion of their profits to charities. Why give your $3 to Starbucks when you can get better coffee here and feel good about yourself at the same time. Pros: Organic coffee, Friendly staff, Cool atmosphere more

Best SF Coffeehouse 11/1/2005

This is my favorite coffeehouse in San Francisco. All organic and fair trade coffee and tea and organic treats to eat. Delicious. Big, but inviting. Two leather couches and lots of big comfortable chairs in addition to the table seating. Good free library to browse books on the Haight Ashbury, the 60s, and other interesting stuff, including board games and toys for the kiddies. Free wireless Internet and a rental computer. Interesting quotes and posters. Really friendly baristas. Super clean. Pros: Delicious, Organic, Friendly more

Great Coffeehouse 10/21/2005

Coffee to the People opened up in the Upper Haight sometime earlier this year. It is a really fun place to hang out. They have a number of different kinds of coffee and they will serve it to you any way you want: drip, french press, pour over. You name it. A large selection of teas, too. It has lots of space, but broken up into different areas so it doesn't seem too impersonal. My favorite part is the library and living room area with books, games, couches and comfy chairs. Pros: Great coffee, Lots of space, comfy more
