Dosa lover's paradise 6/19/2010

I am love their Dosas. Crunchy, crispy flavorful Dosas with great delicious filling and curry. My other favorite-eggplant curry with peanut curry sauce. this place is best rated indian in pdx for a good reason Pros: excellent indian more

BEST INDIAN FOOD IN PDX 6/10/2010

I have been visiting Chutneys for almost 2 years since we moved from Texas. The food is hands down the best in PDX. My favorite is Mumtaz Biryani. It is made very authentic with all the Hyderabadi spices and fresh herbs. Yes they do use fresh mint (not basil) in all biryanis. I also love their dosas and garlic naan. I attended their cooking class several months ago and suggest it for those that want to learn about indian cusine. It is great value for what you get, plus you know what goes into your favorite dishes. RP Singh Pros: authentic india with fresh local ingredients Cons: wish it was closer to portland more

Worst Dinner- best place to take ex mother in law! 5/22/2010

The owner said she is from South India- after eating there, I felt she may have never seen India . Cook may have taken an Online Indian cooking class. This place will teach you what Indian food SHOULD NOT taste like. Raw Onion and Basil in Biriyani? You got it...\r Steamed Cauliflower and carrot in Sambar? U got it...\r Raita resembles rice pudding with sweet peas in it- U got it..\r Every dish is over loaded with tomato purree...\r If she was cooking - Moguls and British would have left India way sooner! Not to mention- they could have solved the over population problem in India by increasing the sucidal rate among fat people!\r Oh to top it off- If you ask Chillie or Jalapeno - she goes we don't use chillie.\r So my advicve- please take your ex mother in law- Cops will never know what caused her to...... Pros: I didn't throw up Cons: I had to see a doctor... more

Not bad, Not bad at all 3/12/2010

worth it for sure. Great authenticity and even had King Fisher beer. Prompt pleasant service with really tasty lamb and naan. Even the music was authentic to the 10 or so visits I made to India. Pros: service, taste and a clean place Cons: a bit $ more

Its all there! 1/13/2009

We just moved here from Houston, didn't think any of the Portland restaurants would stand up to some of the quality Indian food I am used to. I was wrong, found about Chutneys from Urbanspoon. My iphone shaker said Chutneys so we went. It is almost impossible to find an Indian restaurant that ranks high in quality, ambiance and customer service. I am totally impressed with everything. The waitress was very friendly and the service was great. She came by to make sure that water and soda were topped off. The food was delicious and fresh, the fresh herb (mint and basil) garnishing was exquisite and added great flavor. Mumtaz biryani was the best I have ever had. You have to try their mango pie, if you love mango like I do, you will be in tropical heaven. Now if someone can help me find some sunshine in this town I will be all set. Pros: fresh herbs added great flavor more

Best Indian restaurant in pdx 1/13/2009

I have been going to Chutneys for about a year now, I used to go to the buffet place on Fourth Plain before Chutneys opened. Chutneys does not have a buffet, they serve platters (and regular menu) at lunch. They serve an assortment of samplers for platters, it usually is 2-3 vegetarian curries, tandoori chicken, dessert, fresh made naan bread and basmati rice. The curries and tandoori chicken are delicious, unlike the typical buffet restaurants that recycle left over items and keep the food in warmers for days. Naan bread is brought fresh to the table and not piled up soggy bread in the food warmer. I am very suspicious about the below posting, most indian restaurants do not sell takeouts of platters. I can't imagine that Chutneys does lunch platter takeouts. Imagine packing all of the small samplers with bread and rice when you have to deal with regular lunch crowd. I am not sure how anyone can keep the small potions of curry samplers warm in takeout containers. Our work group eats at Chutneys at least once a week, we love it! Pros: great tasting platters, fresh naan served at the table Cons: takes 15-20 minutes, worth the wait more

Overpriced & below average Indian Food place 12/18/2008

I did a lunch take out and it was totally a bad experience. The food was bland and had no taste. I have not had worse experience at an Indian food place before this. Not recommended and FYI there are pretty good Indian food places across the river Pros: Parking May be? more

Tasteless Indian food 12/18/2008

The worst Indian food I've ever had. We ordered thali (which was a bad idea). The food was cold and tasteless. I know I can cook better Indian food than that. There are many other better indian restaurants in the portland/vancouver area. I believe they had a Chutney's in Seattle. A good friend of mine went there and I was told that the food sucked. I guess they are a chain in Washington. None of the locations have good food. Pros: nothing Cons: food, service more

Best Indian restaurant in Portland 12/8/2008

The food was so amazing! Light and healthy, perfect portions, exquisite flavor, excellent service and a relaxing atmosphere. What more could you want. This is absolutely my new favorite restaurant.\r My favorite: Mumtaz Biryani and Garlic Naan Pros: Ambience with great food more

Good service.. Great hostess.. 9/7/2008

I am Indian and having stayed in different parts of India, I assume I have enough experience to say that this restaurant serves authentic Indian food. I would have preferred my food to be a little spicy though (but I would not reduce the number of stars because I did not tell them to make the food spicier). The portions are decent and the aroma of the food is good. The hostess was prompt and friendly. She genuinely asked for feedback and it was not one of the 'just - asked - you - so - I - get - a - good - tip' inquiries. When she found out that we were having our first anniversary dinner (no, this is not a romantic dining place but the couch seats provide enough privacy), she served us a nice mango pie as a dessert for free, which I thought was a nice gesture! We had good food at a reasonable cost and a very good experience. I would highly recommend this place and would definitely go there again! more

Left me hungry 9/3/2008

It's great to find another Indian restaurant in Vancouver. I liked the service in this restaurant but think the portion sizes are very small. Pros: Service Cons: Small portions more

Vegans paradise 8/13/2008

The mung sprout salad and non-vegetarian curry specials [weekends only :-( ] are absurdly delicious, and I can hear the ""ooohs and aahhs"" around me from people enjoying other fare. I can only imagine how delightful this must be if you're a vegetarian [most of the food is] - if not, it's still a whole new way to eat Indian. They have a great selection of domestic and indian wines and beers. Pros: great veg selection more

Great food, equally good decor and service. 8/13/2008

I'm starting to believe that if you want the finest food in Vancouver you need to be coming to 164th. Chutneys is no exception.\r \r I've been to this restaurant about a dozen times and all I can say is that it is consistent and tasty. Usually, I order a variation of a paneer as well as veggie samosas and garlic naan. This is one place wife and I can readily agree on, she is gluten allergic. Most of their menu is gluten free. We also love the fact that food is not soaked in oil or butter. You can taste the fresh sauces with herbs. Mumtaz biryani (was a daily special last Friday) is excellent, it was prepared with chicken, lamb, shrimp in basmati rice with fresh spinach, basil, mint leaves and cashews. You can have a side of korma sauce or cucumber salad for 1.99.\r \r There's so many things to like about this place it's hard to list them all. In addition, the service and decor are excellent.\r \r I wholly recommend this place to anyone with a hankering for Indian. Pros: great food worth the wait Cons: usually takes 15-20 min to get your order more

Super Chef Guru is Gone. He is Missed. 8/12/2008

In my recent visit I was in a party of four. This review reflects all our opinions. Our meals were average for an indian restaurant in the Portland area and average for a restaurant in Vancouver, which is why I rated it 3 stars. However, both of these groups of restaurants are disappointing on average, and so were these meals. In Portland this would be 2 stars, but so would the other indian restaurants there. The shrimp was overly seasoned. The chicken had an overcooked texture despite the abundant sauce. The seekh kabab (lamb sausage) did not taste good and had no resemblance to roasted lamb. The pakoras had a strange seasoning. The Onion kulcha (bread) reeked of cilantro and did not taste good. The prices are reasonable for meats and breads, but high for vegetarian dishes.\r \r These meals are not nearly as good as the dinners we enjoyed her half a year ago, cooked by Chef Guru. Those were the best meals we had in the Portland area, tasty, different, subtle, a unique and successful combination of French and Indian cooking. But Guru is gone, and the change is drastic. Even the decor isn't quite as nice as it was, although it is well above the usual humble environs of indian restaurants. \r \r As it stands now this is clearly the 2nd best indian restaurant in Vancouver. Of 2. more

Best Indian food in Portland 6/9/2008

The food is fantastic. I go there at least once a month and sometimes up to twice a week, and I bring guests from out of town as well as family. The preparation of the dishes is incredibly consistent so that I can count on having my favorites served the same way every time. Excellent Tandoori Chicken, Chicken 65, Chana Masala, breads (naans) and rice dishes. Beyond all this, the staff will recognize you after you eat a few meals remember your likes and dislikes. The decor and cleanliness of the place is outstanding, something you are not accustomed to at Indian restaurants. They have best wine and beer selection, both domestic and Indian. MUST TRY DISH: MUMTAZ BIRYANI, simply mouthwatering. more

AWESOME! 6/8/2008

I popped into Chutneys a couple of weeks ago. I have to say it was the best Indian food I've tasted in a long time. Very fresh and very well presented. I loved their menu they allow you to try a little of everything with the lunch special/lunch platter. I highly recommend Chutneys, even if your not in Vancouver it's worth the drive. Also the space is awesome for groups and family style dinners. Pros: Great Value Platters and Wonderful Service Cons: None more
