Best

We are so lucky to have this great place to eat and have a cold beer in our area. The owners are the most down to earth friendly couple. They treat you like you came to their hous...

Worst

I had the pad thai with beef. It was ok. Noodles were al dente (good), but beef was very tough and tasted a little off. My fiance had Teriyaki stir-fry with Salmon. Sauce was...

Terrific neighborhood sushi! 3/4/2007

I was looking for a decent sushi joint around my neighborhood and boy did I luck into Chon Som. Great sushi and rolls. Very friendly atmosphere and lovely staff. Have gone back four times in the last three weeks :) Have a great happy hour too! Pros: convenience, ambience, value Cons: thermostat was set too cold one :) more

What we needed in Wells Branch 1/28/2007

The cuisine (notice I did not say food) was exquisite. My only issue with out visit was the service. I was having a bad day, so I certainly will not hold it against them. With only three tables present when we arrived, our greet time was a little long. Our appetizer arrived with our entree which annoyed me and the high-ball glasses jammed packed full of ice did not leave much room for iced tea. However, I said I was cranky that evening so ignore that part. The great part was the crisp tasty Gyoza (dumplings). We chose pork for our filling. They were crispy on the outside and filled with yummy stuff on the inside. I had the Tofu Pad Thai. It was a little spicy, which I like. The tofu was a little chewy, but the flavors were awesome. My dinner partner had the red curry chicken. It could have used a little more kick, but every Thai place is different and you are always cautious about ordering too hot. We did not have room to try the sushi, but it looked great and reasonably priced. Wells Branch has had little mom and pop Asians restaurantts pop up all over, Thai/Pan Asian is what we were missing. Try it as soon as you can. Just don't follow suit and go in a cranky mood. Pros: Great food for a reasonable price. Less than $30 for appetizer and dinner for 2. more

Fabulous Thai Food and Sushi 1/26/2007

Thanks to Chom Son, I am now addicted to Thai food. Delcious. Try the dynamite shrimp! They are fantastic. I had the red curry with chicken, loved it! I can't wait to go back and try something else. more

My search for excellent Thai is FINALLY over 1/25/2007

I am so happy that I have finally found a place in Austin with amazing Thai food that is consistent, delicious, MSG free and VERY reasonably priced. Having lived in Thailand, I can be a tad picky about my Thai food, but the chef always impresses me with how talented she is. There is always parking, which was a problem with some of the places downtown. The wait staff is friendly and helpful, but not overly solicitous. They have a cool little room for private parties that we have used before. You feel very VIP in there. Absolutely start with the Dynamite Shrimp, but those little buggers are addictive. Now I am so hungry thinking about it, I am going there for dinner tonight!!! Pros: Excellent food, great price, easy parking, good service, MSG free, serve wine and beer, private party room Cons: The Dynamite Shrimp is addictive more

The Best of Both Worlds! 1/25/2007

Very friendly, warm and accommodating. Most importantly - the food is absolutely amazing. Melt in your mouth sashimi and very tasty rolls too. I also had the Pad Thai and Tom Yum soup and was completely blown away. My daughter who is a very finicky eater had the Miso soup and fried rice, lets just say she finished every thing on her plate which is pretty unusual. Pros: Friendly Service, Great Food, Extensive Menu more

Great Sushi! Well priced to boot.. 1/24/2007

For sushi buffs, you just can't get any better. This is not to take from the exceptional Thai food, but nobody does it better than their master sushi chef! Highly recommended! Pros: Great food, interesting art, and fair prices Cons: hard to find more

Great food, reasonable prices, friendly staff! 12/1/2006

We have now been to Chon Som on several occassions. Birthday celebrations, casual dinners w/ friends, and last minute dinners after a long day at the office. Each time we go, the food, the service, and the atmosphere just keep getting better. People are definitely finding out about this hot new spot! If you go in for sushi, try the salmon roll, or check with Nat or the waitstaff to see if there is a special sushi of the night...Certain not to disappoint, promise! No doubt start w/ the dynamite shrimp. Everything on the menu has been a pleasure for me so far, and my list of items to try continues to grow with each visit! They are on to something wonderful! Pros: Easy parking, relaxed atmosphere, wonderful food, great prices more

Fantastic Sushi and Thai 11/2/2006

I love many things about Chon Som, but the Sushi has to be my favorite thing of all. You can challenge the Sushi chef, Nat, to come up with something off of the menu and you will end up with a wonderful treat every time. The sushi is fresh and delicious, and the presentation is always done with class. The Dynamite Shrimp is delightful; order it with caution, knowing that you may form an addiction. Chon Som is not a pretentious restaurant so it is easy to stay focused on the food, the nice atmosphere and the good service. The Thai food tastes great too, but I don't really know enough about Thai food to say how it rates compared to other places, I just know it tastes really good! more

Real Thai Style 10/14/2006

I am thai and it is rare that you find a thai restaurant that meets up to real thai style cooking. Well my search is over. This place is fantastic and just opened a couple months ago! As soon as we walked thru the door we were greeted graciously and seated fast. The menu had all the familiar, original thai dishes I love and cook myself at home. The Panang Curry was delicious with it's nutty, coconut ,spicy flare, and the Monsoon Noodles were out of this world served in a brown gravy sauce cooked in a charcoal flavored wok (that's the key and just like Thailand!) The chicken larb (minced chicken, flavored with raw rice thats toasted, grounded then sprinkled in the chicken, red chilis, and lime) was just like moms. Normally thai restaurants serve small portions but the portions at ChonSom are plentiful and you will get your moneys worth! The sushi was just as delightful and very fresh. For the appetizer try the ""Strawberries Eels Forever"" sushi roll, the Papaya Salad (eat it with rice and make it a meal for you vegans), for the soup both the Tom Yum and Tom Kha are soothing and flavorful. Oh and of course the infamous Pad Thai is the best I've had. The service is great and you won't have to wait too long to get your order like most thai restaurants. Try this place out, you will not be disappointed! I love it! One of my top 5. Pros: Real Thai Style cooking more

Great Thai food and awesome sushi! 10/4/2006

I love this restaurant! The food is incredible. I haven't had a dish yet that I didn't like. I go there 2-4 times a week for lunch and an occassional dinner. Alisa is amazing in the kitchen with all of the Curries, the Spicy Cashew, and the Tom Kha soup. All are great dishes. And Nat is known for his sushi, such as The Dynamite Shrimp, Strawberry Eels Forever, and Kanisu. They just melt in your mouth. Pros: Food, Food, Food more
