Food items could be hit or miss 11/9/2009

For starters, we had Papa a la Huancaina (never again), Papa Rellena de Carne (quite good), Fried Calamari (very good) and Ceviche de Camarones (very good, I don't like shrimp, much less raw shrimp, so that's saying something). My entree was the Tacu Tacu de carne. I had the steak medium and it was cooked as I wanted but the meat was somehow very tough and rubbery. The sangria I had wasn't very good either. My friend ordered the whole red snapper and it was a huge plate. The other friend ordered the Tallarin Saltado de Carne o Pollo and was let down. Maybe it was the soy sauce but it was way too salty and tasted like Chinese low mein. Pros: quickly seated without a reservation on a saturday Cons: some overpriced items, certain tables are in the dark more

YUMMY! 5/3/2009

i order in chimu VERY often. not only are the people running this place super nice, the food is also delicious and very reasonably priced. i normally get the llomo saltado with pollo and it rocks my world. highly recommended! Pros: nice people, very good food more

NOT authentic Peruvian food 4/18/2009

I tried Chimu a few times and as a Peruvian I can only recommend the Lomo saltado there. Don't order the ""pollo a la brasa"" at opening time because they will give a leftover piece from the day before. The cooks, servers and waiters are not Peruvian and not knowledgeable at all about Peruvian cuisine. I was there last Thursday and I ordered pollo a la brasa con papas fritas, tamal, papa rellena y chupe de camarones. The chicken was obviously a leftover piece from the day before, it didn't have any flavor, I couldn't eat the fries, they serve the chicken and fries in different plates (with the only purpose to charge you separately for it) This was the worst ""pollo a la brasa"" I have ever tried I could only take a bite. The tamal was a quarter of a regular size tamal and it had a very small piece of chicken instead of a decent piece of pork as it should be. Pros: The ""lomo saltado"" Cons: dark and gloomy atmosphere. more

Delish!!!! 12/1/2008

Love love love this place!!! I've been going to Chimu for the past year and the food is amazing. The service and the food have been consistently great. Try the Lomo Saltado with beef or chicken, sauteed with tomato and onion over fries! You won't regret it! Cheap, nice portions, great staff and worth the trip! Pros: great staff, nice portions more

Who knew? 8/18/2008

It's delicious. I have tried many of the items there, and the food is consistently amazing. The service is excellent. The food does not come out the second you order it, but when it does, you forget how long you waited. I have never had a bad experience here. I am no expert on Peruvian food, but I love to eat and I adore Chimu. Pros: Food, service, accessibility of an ethnic cuisine Cons: Takes a little time to get the food to the table more

Chimu 4/21/2008

I am born and breed in Wiilyb I've seen them all , Chimu has the best service the Red Snapper and skirt steak are incredible. The owner is very sweet. thank U of a wonderful dinning experience! Pros: Ambience, romantic more

Great, low-key alternative to ""Williamsburg"" scene 11/8/2007

Having moved to the neighborhood, I was thrilled find this cheap, down-to-earth Peruvian steakhouse. The steak piled on pesto spaghetti won't win any points for presentation, but at its low cost and generous portion, it's definitely a great go-to meal when your looking for some comfort food, South American style. The baked snapper is also a winner, though I've yet to try the chicken as the rotiserrie always seems to be broken. more

Just OK - Hyped Up Peruvian 6/7/2007

My friends kept talking about Chimu and how delicious their meals are so I went this past Sunday. Small restaurant, minimally designed. I looked at their menu online at menupages and it was accurate except the prices were about $5 more each dish in reality. I tried the mixed seafood ceviche $14ish (slightly too salty), basil spaghetti with steak $17 (basically spagetti with pesto sauce- too bland, steak was not of very good quality- not very well seasoned), sangria $6/glass (just ok- only apples and oranges used as fruit). Overall a very mediocre experience, but that may have stemmed from the fact I was expecting a lot. I imagined more bold and succulent and what I got was bland. Meats were slightly tough; their seasonings were slightly off. I may try again and give them the benefit of the doubt that it was an off-night for them. Cons: Price too high for quality of food more

GREAT FOOD, WONDERFUL SERVICE 12/2/2006

These days it seems so rare to find such a great restaurant with such wonderful service in Williamsburg. Chimu was extremely busy when we went and we had to wait a while, but they seated us as soon as they could and the food was so wonderful. Although they were so busy, the bartender refused to take our cash and told us we could pay with dinner as not to inconveience us to pay twice. It was a very trusting and thoughtful gesture that set the tone for the wonderful service to follow. Unfortunately, this level of trust and service can be dificult to find in some other restaurants in the neighborhood. Although Peruvian beer was not my favorite, it certainly is nice to try something new (I did not like the Cusquena, but preferred the Pilser - however, many people disagree with me). Chimu had a wonderful avocado with shrimp topping appetizer that resembles a Peruvian version of the avocado/shrimp salad served at Sweetwater (which we love). My girlfriend had this truly wonderful rice dish with plenty of seafood (including a 1/2 crab, squid, shrimp, mussels and clams) which reminded me of the paella at Son Cubano in Manhattan, perhaps even better. As for the steak, you can get a leaner skirt steak, or a more marbled and thick, fatty steak that they offer. As a steak connaisseur I can't lie - I was expecting to be disappointed, but was pleasantly surprised to find instead a nice succulent steak prepared properly over a grill and served with a very tasty olive oil and garlic herb marinade. It is not trying to be Peter Luger and doesn't need to - this steak was fabulous in its own unique way and you WILL love it. I truly loved this place and, yes, the owner IS the friendliest man and that is an added plus to make this place so worth trying out. All the positive reviews before mine are true - you must try this place. more

I'm getting hungry writing this 3/20/2006

I love this place. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is great, the owner is the nicest guy ever. I live close by so I take all of my friends there often (the owner greets me with kisses, that's how I know it's often) :) The food is really really good, it's the kind of food you think about the next day. Pros: Food, Atmosphere Cons: Nothing more

Great service-great food! 2/18/2005

We really enjoyed the food, although the entree portions were way more than we could handle (which kind of annoys me), and loved the service. Very warm and friendly people. We had the empanadas as an app, which were great; the Aji De Gallina, which was chicken and potato covered with a creamy, slightly spicey sauce and was also very yummy; and the ice cream combo for dessert, which I highly recommend for its original flavor. Please go to give them more business!! Pros: service, food, decor Cons: location more

Loved it Loved it Loved it. 2/15/2005

Food was great, flavorful and large portions. Owner was super nice. Overall a great night out and highly recommend it. more

Incredible - WORTH THE TRIP!!! 1/4/2005

Check this place out! The food is incredible, the atmosphere is fantastic. My girlfriend and have gone several times (she happens to live around the corner), and every time has been great. The steak is wonderful, as is everything I've had. You've gotta try the pisco sour. Unusual, but great. AND spectacular service! The owner is a wonderful guy who is there almost every night. One of my favorites in Willimasburg. Pros: Service, Atmosphere, Value more

check it out!!! 9/8/2004

Hidden treasure! 9/6/2004

This little place in Williamsburg is a hidden treasure. It has great Peruvian steak and seafood, great drinks, and is a great value too. The two times I've been there, I've tasted 4 completely different delicious meals (I split dishes). The place was cute and was completely empty; no one seems to know about it. It's everyone else's loss. Great for dates or with friends. Clearly, I can't rave enough. I hope this place doesn't go under before it has a chance. Check it out! Short walk from Lorimer stop off the L. Pros: great food, great price, great service more
