These days it seems so rare to find such a great restaurant with such wonderful service in Williamsburg. Chimu was extremely busy when we went and we had to wait a while, but they seated us as soon as they could and the food was so wonderful. Although they were so busy, the bartender refused to take our cash and told us we could pay with dinner as not to inconveience us to pay twice. It was a very trusting and thoughtful gesture that set the tone for the wonderful service to follow. Unfortunately, this level of trust and service can be dificult to find in some other restaurants in the neighborhood. Although Peruvian beer was not my favorite, it certainly is nice to try something new (I did not like the Cusquena, but preferred the Pilser - however, many people disagree with me). Chimu had a wonderful avocado with shrimp topping appetizer that resembles a Peruvian version of the avocado/shrimp salad served at Sweetwater (which we love). My girlfriend had this truly wonderful rice dish with plenty of seafood (including a 1/2 crab, squid, shrimp, mussels and clams) which reminded me of the paella at Son Cubano in Manhattan, perhaps even better. As for the steak, you can get a leaner skirt steak, or a more marbled and thick, fatty steak that they offer. As a steak connaisseur I can't lie - I was expecting to be disappointed, but was pleasantly surprised to find instead a nice succulent steak prepared properly over a grill and served with a very tasty olive oil and garlic herb marinade. It is not trying to be Peter Luger and doesn't need to - this steak was fabulous in its own unique way and you WILL love it. I truly loved this place and, yes, the owner IS the friendliest man and that is an added plus to make this place so worth trying out. All the positive reviews before mine are true - you must try this place.
