Such a great date night 4/17/2010

This was such a great night out! We planned to go early and drop the kids at a friend's house for a little dinner and playdate. We got to the bar when they opened at 5:30. We were not exhausted and were ready to enjoy a nice drink and some great food. I had a Caiparinha (so good !) he had a Guiness. We enjoyed a pressed Cuban sandwich (I think the best in town), fritters with a guava bbq sauce and a spicy aoli, and a stacked crab salad/cake type thing with mashed potatoes (cold but good) avocado, and fresh tasty crab. Their salsa is amazing (had to ask for more) and the chips were plantains crisped to a chip! Yum! We're already scheduling another night out here...saw so many takeout orders too! Who would think? Take out a Cuban if you can't drop the kids at a friends. Pros: delicious, fun, great food and drinks, unique Cons: parking (for some) it gets really busy come early more

Overpriced menu, mediocre food, poor service 11/15/2009

They sat us promptly, but then we had to witness a nice couple being told that another reservation was coming so they would have to continue their meal at the bar. The table then remained empty for the next 45 minutes and there were several empty tables throughout the night. The dining room is very crowded making it difficult for staff to serve customers. Staff were inexperienced, waitress rather rude (we were brought the check before we were even asked if we wanted anything else). Food was overpriced and rather mediocre. My trout was tasteless...the sides very heavy. There are so many other restaurants with better staff, food, ambiance, which cost much less. Instead, try Green Street, Temple Bar, Union, Gaslight...to name a few! Pros: Cocktails and desserts are good Cons: Great idea, poor execution... more

Wonderful! 11/25/2007

Loved this restaurant. My husband and I went for our anniversary, and we were both really happy with it. The decor is pleasant and classy without being obnoxious, and the service was great. And the food was amazing. The Cuban twist on French cuisine was really innovative, and they had some very cool flavor combinations that I never would have thought of before. It's a little pricey, but perfect for a special occasion. I can't wait to go back! more

rude customer service 8/8/2007

My husband and I went to eat at Chez Henri restaurant. We were really looking forward to dining at this ""Cuban/French fusion restaurant. We made reservations a week in advance. Cons: rude waitress, manager, bad customer service more

Mojitos + Mojitos + Good Food = Great Experience 11/12/2006

Like mojitos? Try one at Chez Henri, they are great! Having gone to the bar for the last few years, I was treated to a dinner there recently with some friends and we had a great time. The appetizers were delicious and definitely better than their version of steak frites, but overall it was a fun time! I like the little faux-newspaper ""doggie"" bags they use. It's a great local cambridge spot that hasn't gotten an ego from its constant stream of fans and loyal customers. Has that nice, comfortable, cozy local feel. I would definitely go back to the dining room another time, but may opt to continue getting a cuban sandwich at the bar, it is such a great deal and so delicious! Pros: Drinks, Bar, Local vibe more

Best Cuban Sandwich 10/23/2006

Quaint space, beautiful bar side menu. I had a fantastic experience with wonderful service. Pros: Food and service Cons: It can get crowded more

Cuban...Mmmmmm 8/3/2006

I love the Cuban sandwich from the bar menu. It's one of the best I've had. I agree that the waitstaff can be pushy sometimes. The bar area is a little cramped, but the dining room is spacious. I'll also agree w/ the parking problem. It's worse than the North End, if you can believe that! Pros: Great Cuban Sandwhich Cons: parking, cramped bar area seating more

Excellent food and service 1/15/2006

All of you who hated the service should try it again. The food was excellent (very creative, very good ingredients and very subtle) and so was the service. Also the place was packed with people of all age groups but was not noisy at all so you could actually carry on a conversation! One of my favourites along with EVOO, Oleana and Mistral. Highly recommended. Pros: Great Food, Great Wine, Great value for money Cons: Hard to find parking more

Hope you like bar food 11/1/2005

Horrible experience! I called on a Sunday to make reservations for Thursday. I was informed that Chez Henri will not take reservations for small parties, and it would be about a 40 minute wait for thursday. My excited girlfriend spend the whole week telling all her friends how she was going to eat escargot on her birthday. When we got the the restuarant there was no valet! We had to spend 30 minutes just looking for a place to park. When we entered the restaurant we were rudely informed that it was been closed for a private party, but we could sit at the cramped bar and order off the bar menu.... The bar menu! I didn't take my girlfriend out on her birthday for a grilled cheese sandwhich! How hard would it have been to inform me that the restuarant would be closed when I called 3 days earlier! Cons: rude staff, not for small parties more

Good Cuban/Rotten Host Staff 6/10/2004

We have visited Chez Henri for years and have done take out since our baby was born. We just go for Mojitos and Cubans. Cubans are good, ""special sauce"" however, sometimes applied too zealously. Fried Yuca would be favored over the fried plaintains. ""Salsa"" on greens doesn't add much. The host staff has consistently been just lacking in good people skills, graciousness, customer service, attitude and manners. Having been in the restaurant service myself, I am appalled at the poor level of staffing in this area. It got so bad we ""boycotted"" them for awhile which wasn't such a bad thing. I learned to make Cubans myself. Our homemade version is our fave but sometimes when out of home fixins' we jones for a Cuban and JP is too far away so back to Chez Henri we go- Please! Keep the wonderful drinks and sandwiches but shelve the host staff. Pros: Mojitos, Mojitos, Cubans Cons: , Hostess Staff more

Over-rated and over-priced. 1/25/2003

I'm not afraid to spend good money on good food, and while I spent good money at Chez Henri, the meal was disappointing. The restaurant is a bit cramped and not terribly romantic, and the service was less than stellar. Our server was certainly friendly enough, but either didn't bother or didn't have time to check in on us as frequently as she could have (read: only once, about 15 minutes after our meal was served). Menu is limited but diverse. Truffle soup was excellent, but main course (a chicken dish) had no subtlety and was over-spiced. Wine list was sufficient but had an incredible mark-up. I've heard from many friends that the bar's Cuban sandwich is to die for, but I'm in no hurry to go back to check it out. Pros: excellent soup Cons: over-priced, mediocre service more

Terrible! 1/17/2003

Terrible service at this restaurant. We waited 45 minutes to be seated despite a reservation. THe lady who took the registration was absolutely insistent that we promise to turn up but yet they made us wait. The food came slowly. Between the entree and the dessert, we waited another endless time. When we questioned about the 18% optional service charge, the waiter got upset. We paid the s.ch. and was at the door to leave when the manager stopped us. HE demanded to know why we refused to pay the optional s.ch. and was arrogant and condescending. So much for service. We are never going back. Cons: Terrible service, Manager is rude more

French Cuisine best sampleed at the bar 1/9/2003

Catering to the professors and professionals around Harvard Square, Chez Henri serves decent steak au pauvre, cuban sandwiches, and the bartenders make a mean caprihina. It's slightly over-priced, but not ridiculous. The bar is small, but a pleasant place to have a few with decent company. more

Fraud or what? 11/1/2002

The menu and the pictures that you can find on bostonchefs.com has nothing to do with the real menu - much less glamourous. I lived in France and I miss fois gras, so I specifically ordered it and you know what they sold me for at 15$ 0.5oz? a regular duck liver.. One might say it is the way Fois Gras is in Alsace? I have been to Strasburg and nope, it is the same Fois Gras as in Paris, Lyon and even Moscow, Russia. I love liver and probably would order it anyway, but when you say that it's Fois Gras and serve ""Fois"" only without ""Gras"" - it is called... fraud. Other than that, I loved everything I ordered - excellent Alsacian food! but too pricey for $120 (including drinks and tips). Pros: Quality food, French meal Cons: Deceitful menu, Expect the unexpected, Smoke from the bar more

Head for the bar 10/2/2002

Skip the restaurant and head over to the bar and order the fantastic ""cuban pressed sandwich"" or any of the other items from the excellent bar menu or some apetizers from the regular menu. Flush it all down with a martini or a periodista or a mojito or whatever. That is - if you can get a seat. The bar, mind you, is crowded with black turtleneck wearing poets reading the collected works of tolstoy. Aroung 8 or 9pm you could easily mistake the crowd jumping on a free bar stool or table for a pack of feeding hyenas. So come late (or early) because the food and the atmosphere are actually really worth it! Pros: good food (at bar) Cons: bar too small, no parking more

Not Cuba, 5/21/2002

Chez Henri is very quite for a place that has such a festive ambience. The food is great and they have a creative menu but bring your pillow. Most of the patrons are there for a quiet time around a canble perhaps having a smoke. The service is a little slow (Cuba) and not always a friendly bartender. Pros: People Cons: Bartender more
