This place had good food. The service could have been a little better but I would give it another shot! more

Hit and Miss Food, Exceptionally BAD Service 12/18/2011

Zero stars. I was surprised at the end of my meal to be charged an 18% gratuity which the hostess explained is for Groupon only when I asked why, since we were only a party of two. Her response made it seem that they added this mandatory gratuity for those Groupon purchases only. I had previously visited this establishment for the first time over two weeks prior after learning about them on Groupon. I hadn't purchased the Groupon yet, but was in the neighborhood and decided to try it anyway. I was really pleased with my meal and purchased the deal thereafter and returned with my friend on this second occasion. The appetizer was so stale and hard to chew, as well as dry. They also didn't have the main course that we had come to try, stating that they had run out. The waiter explained that weekends are busy in the early afternoon, and sometimes because of catering parties this happens. My friend and I didn't complain about the stale appetizer (he doesn't like confrontations and I didn't want him to feel uncomfortable, so I decided that when I came back the next time, I would mention it. Needless to say, I won't be coming back), and we were happy with a secondary choice suggested to us. There were three staff and two tables being served, one of them mine. Apparently the two hostesses knew the men at the other table and remained engaged in conversation the rest of our visit there with them. Two other tables were seated during our course and the single waiter was the only person running around while the two ladies nonchalantly bantered with their friends. I have to mention, the first time I ate there, the same thing happened. The hostess and the waiter sat and talked in the corner. Both times, the conversations were loud enough for you to hear all the details. Anyway, the one waiter came to refill our glasses once since he was also taking care of the new orders of the other tables. I brought up the fact to him that he looked like he could use some help, hinting at the two ladies who didn't care that he was doing everything himself. He agreed, but suggested it was like that most of the time. In any regard, I wouldn't have bought this Groupon had I known I would be charged a mandatory 18%. I think Groupon is a great way to introduce people to services in and around their community for the chance to build an establishment's patron following. But bad service will not keep anyone coming back here. The food in my two visits seems hit and miss. You have to get there early on the weekends to get the fresh stuff. Forcing someone to pay an 18% gratuity when it's a miss with food quality while service is consistently bad is not good business. After protesting to the hostess about this mandatory 18% gratuity I had to leave and expressing my opinion about the evening's food and service, she finally obliged to remove the appetizer charge from our bill, though she tried to convince me that that the appetizer was supposed to be that way. I agree food here can be amazing, but it needs to be consistent and the staff needs major customer service training. Atmosphere can be nice if you didn't have to listen to the restaurant staff's personal lives and they paid more attention to you to earn that mandatory 18% tip they impose. BTW, Groupon details and fine print did not mention this 18% mandatory gratuity so I think this is something the restaurant does to make up for the discount being given. Also, one final note- I have been a waitress at a fine dining establishment before so I know first hand what customer service should be like and that tips are just that- tips. You have to work for it. more

Food Great, Service Not 5/18/2008

I have been to Char Fasl numerous times, but always for lunch. The food is consistently wonderful and, for that, I would not hesitate to recommend it. So when a friend suggested that we meet there for dinner, I thought it was a great idea. We went last Friday night, but I had no idea that there is live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Had I known, I certainly would have suggested another venue. The dining room is way too small for such loud music! It was nearly deafening. We had to shout across the table at one another in order to be heard. I also have to echo other reviews that warned about the lack of service. Although our server was competent, the only time he came to our table was to take our order or deliver our meal. I had to flag him down to get a refill of my beverage. He never came to ask if there was anything else we needed or wanted. I'm not certain if this is a cultural thing, but the Persian patrons seated at adjacent tables certainly received more attention. The good news is that I live in Agoura Hills, Char Fasl is close by and the food is great. You will not, however, EVER see me there on a Friday or Saturday night, and I think I will stick to lunch-time or evenings when I am NOT seeking a leisurely dining experience. Pros: Food is wonderful. Cons: Service is impersonal and limited. more

SSsssllllloooooowwwww or discourteous ""service"" 1/12/2008

The food was absolutely fantastic and the owner is hands on, which begs the question, why was everyone here inattentive to the point of thinking they are doing it intentionally. My waiter came to my table a total of 2 times. Once to take the order, and once to bring something. Thats it. No Is Your Food Fine. No Can I get something else for you. No Would you like me to refresh your drink. It wasn't at all that busy there, so when I see this level of inattentiveness I am inclined to think its intentional. I think I must have sat there for 20 minutes before the busboy, wondering why i'm not being attended to finally cleared the plates and I asked him for the bill. Ladies and Gentlemen, you dont go out to be insulted or not attended to. Quite the opposite. I'm not sure what these peoples beef was, but thats not how you treat a guest. The food was a 10 out of a 10. It was fabulous. But the service was a 0 out of a 10. You feel like you have gone in the middle of nowhere, where the people have gone home to milk the cow and left you there on your own. Really odd dining experience. I have advice for the managers here. If you aren't so big on service, do what Charlie Kabob does at the mall in Santa Monica - fast food. Fast food this was not. It took a really long time to bring the food and a really really loooonnngggg time to complete what was a horrible dining experience. Yes, you read correctly. The food was a 10. But the dining experience was horrible, because an absentee service. Thus, a 1Star rating out of 5. If you are not looking for negligence to the point of discourtesy steer elsewhere. To be a restaurateur means more than getting the food right. Just ask Zagat. Food: Service: Ambiance. There was hardly 15 people in the entire place, so I don't know what their problem was, that make it the worst Persian food experience in the country, because of lousy --- really lousy service. I wont be going back here, even though the food was fab. Pros: Excellent food Cons: I dont think they know the meaning of the word service. more

Really good persian food in a really clean restaurant 8/14/2007

my boyfriend LOVES persian food - and while i like it - i hate persian restaurants. They are always dirty, the tablecloths are always stained and the silverware's gross. But this restaurant is the difference. So clean -the food is so good and the waitstaff are nice enough. Get the tahdig, and the torshi for sure. Even the non-kabob dishes are yummy. Pros: clean restaurant, good fresh food Cons: small restaurant, a little far from civilization more

Not worth the service 3/13/2006

I've been to Char Fasl more than once and used to think it was a great place. Unfortunately the service has degraded quite a bit! They've now become so rude it ruins the experience of the meal. We were rushed through our meal, given dirty looks when asking for more bread and more of the same when we requested to hold tomatoes from our order. I suggest going elsewhere! Pros: Food Cons: Rude, Slow, Rushed more

Great Persian meat dishes 8/15/2005

I'm not Persian but love the way they prepare chicken, lamb and beef. Char Fasl, or Four Seasons, serves some of the tastiest and most tender koobidehs, kebabs, and bargs I've ever had. I recommend the Soltani, which is a combination of charbroiled tenderloin beef and a strip of seasoned ground beef. Their yogurt with cucumber appetizer, lubia polo and chicken koobideh are also very tasty. The restaurant has recently expanded next door but the service is still slow. Highly recommended if you're near Agoura Hills. Pros: Tasty Food, Fair Prices Cons: Slow Service, Average Atmosphere more

Great Persian Food 8/14/2005

This restaurant recently remodeled and has a much larger, beautiful interior and has live music some times. The food was excellent! The service is better than before and there is much more staff. The seating is great for large parties as well. There is plenty of parking and it is located in a strip mall area. Don't need reservations. Pros: Food, Parking, Good value Cons: Surrounding area more
