no one wants to deal with a debt collector, but if you have to, why not handle the situation rationally and maturely? 10/28/2008

I'm a former employee of Cavalry, and I just sigh, reading all the irrational accusations and threats out there on the Internet. I'm here to tell you: Cavalry is *not* an evil scam operation. They *are* a 3rd party debt collection company.\r \r True, getting a call from a debt collector is not something most people look forward to. But so much anger and upset could so easily be avoided by simply having a rational conversation when a Cavalry person contacts you.\r \r One commenter here is bent out of shape because a Cavalry rep gave little info as to the reason for the call, other than stating they're not telemarketing. Well, here's why. Delinquent debts are a sensitive, private issue. It is extremely important (not to mention legally required) not to dislose confidential information to an uninvolved party. So: if you're getting a call for someone who isn't you, why not just explain that you aren't the person they're trying to reach? If you are the person they're trying to reach, why not confirm your identity and find out the purpose of the call? These are easy things to do and what's more, they will actually get you somewhere. Screaming four-letter words into the phone, contacting your state representative, and ranting on the Internet will not. In fact these actions only makes matters worse, because the collector will assume you have something to hide.\r \r If you are getting bills/calls for a debt that's not legitimately owed, why not pick up the phone and have a grown-up conversation to find out what you need to do to dispute the debt? Again, being mature and rational will get you so much further than yelling profanity, threatening vague legal action, or slamming down the phone.\r \r If you do owe the bill, but are overwhelmed by the amount and unable to pay the balance...why not be an adult about it, talk to the collector, and get an affordable arrangement in place? A 3rd party collector owns the debt, so they can be flexible and work with you. \r \r more

Cavalry Portfolio practices fraud 5/30/2008

Today, I filed an official complaint with the Texas State Attorney General. Cavalry Portfolio sent a debt collection letter to me that appears to be compliant with FDCPA rules, but with an AMOUNT DUE THAT IS TOTALLY FALSE. I mean it -- these people actually INVENTED a number and had the huevos to send a request through the mail that I pay them some moola. The payee is Sprint PC, which was my first mobile phone service THIRTEEN YEARS AGO! There was absolutely no balance due with Sprint when I switched to a different cell phone service. Beware everybody! Pay no money at all ever to this company -- they are scammers and all-out frauds. Pros: It might be fun suing them in a class-action Cons: They lie; they scam; they commit fraud; they harass. Did I mention that they lie? more

Automated Phone Harassment 5/27/2008

This company calls my home twice a day by an automated recording. The recording asks me to identify myself, but it doesn't identify them. (I had to call back the caller ID number to see who it was.) They refused to remove me from their solicitation list and they even refused to tell me what their business was or why they might be trying to reach me. They even denied that they were soliciting me. They said they weren't selling anything, but of course the guy couldn't explain how they could afford to buy the machines, phone number lists, etc., to do all this if in the end the activity wasn't meant to generate income. Of course they are selling something! I actually had to file a complaint with my state attorney general to get them to leave me alone, but I don't know if it will work because the complaint is still being processed. Unlike the other poster, I have never had any business with this firm nor have they purchased a debt of mine; other than my mortgage, which I'm quite sure is still at CitiBank, I am blissfully debt free. I used to own a pet shop, but this is the largest snake pit I've ever seen. Cons: Rude people who refuse to answer questions directly. more
