You have to be the most picky person in the world to not have enjoyed the restaurant. The food and service are A+ and can't be beat in Big Bear. This is a MUST TRY place. more

perfect place 1/28/2011

If You Go to Big Bear, Don't Miss The Captain's Anchorage! Everytime I come to Big Bear I make sure to take my friends and family to The Captain's Anchorage. It has something for everyone. Families will enjoy the history of the ghost who lives upstairs in the restaurant along with the kids menu and the salad bar. We like the rustic mountain lodge atmosphere and the excellent steak and seafood menu. Staff are friendly and attentive. I followed a recommendation for the Anchorage from a local Big Bear resident, and I am so glad I did. I found the perfect place to make a Big Bear tradition for our family and friends. I know you'll enjoy it too! more

perfect. 1/26/2011

I am so glad that I ate here before reading these reviews. My boyfriend and I love this place. The food, service and price, could not have been more perfect. more

very reasonable. 1/25/2011

This is a classic steak, prime rib, fish joint that has a salad/soup bar with entrees ordered. Lots of history and rumors of a ghost that hangs out in the upstairs (this is a 2 story restaurant). The food is very good and I've been twice in the last 2 weeks. The salad bar is OK, but the lettuce is too wet. The soup I had was French onion and it was excellent. I had the twin lobster tails and again they were excellent. My date had 1/2 lb Alaskan King Crab legs and they were right on. The fish is fresh, the baked potatoes are right on, and I personally found the prices very reasonable. more

Fantastic Steak! 1/20/2011

We had a great meal at this cozy mountain restaurant. The soup and salad bar was good. Steak was medium rare ( as requested) and seemed larger than the 6oz ordered. more

Wonderful Place 1/14/2011

We didn't have a reservation but we were seated in 10 minutes. The place has a really fun mountain feel and the old photos are really interesting. We shared a beef and a salmon dish and both were excellent. more

Don't miss the Anchorage! 1/13/2011

The Anchorage hasn't lost its charm! The food, service, and atmosphere are wonderful. I have been going there and taking friends for several years. Everytime I go to Big Bear I make sure a trip to the Anchorage is in the cards. My favorite is the shrimp tampura---the salad and soup bar is a great way to start. The atmosphere is relaxing and of course, there are the stories of George the "ghost". For the "old timers" the memoribilia of Andy Divine is interesting. more

Best Prime rib ever!!! 1/10/2011

Best Prime rib ever!!! SO good and worth the wait....super cozy and extremely friendly service. The hostess bought us a drink because we waited for an hour but we had just walked in so we werent even upset.....highly recommended plus the ghost stories are fun! more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! 1/5/2011

I LOVE THIS PLACE! The atmosphere is dark and rustic and the food is very good. If you're looking for a Morton's or Ruth Chris, this isn't it. But it is full of character, great food, great people, and lots of history. I have been visiting Big Bear all of my life and now I have a home here. I have always really liked this place for it's warm and inviting atmosphere and the food they offer. I have usually ordered steaks that have been very good for the money. What I love is the soup and salad bar that comes with your meal. I love salad bars and theirs is fresh and very good. The bar offers a great rustic atmosphere with lots of ghost and other stories to be told by the great bartenders. The drinks are nice and strong and worth every penny. If you're looking for good food in Big Bear with a nice and rustic atmosphere, then this is the place. I can't wait to go back. more

Love the prime rib here. 1/3/2011

The place has the feel of a dark old cabin. Love the prime rib here. Come here for the Prime Rib! Ive had it numerous times when I lived up there. They used to have a special. Dinner would run about $20. Comes with great chowda or salad bar. I think it was Monday. Don't know what the bad reviews are for. lol I live down ""the hill"" now and can say that this restaurant is def not expensive. Maybe for the locals. This was one of my favorite restaurants in Big Bear. I lived up there for 3 years. Others include Maggios (Italian), Cocina de Mexica (Big Bear City, hole in the wall Mexican), and Grizzly Manoir (local breakfast spot) more

The meal was very good 12/30/2010

I visited friends in Big Bear and they recommended Captains Anchorage for dinner. I was a little hesitant since the rating was just average. The Restaurant has been in Big Bear since 1947 and is supposedly haunted according to my friends who frequent this place. The inside decor is rustic two stories high and the bar has is a tribute to the cowboy actor Andy Divine . We enjoyed rum and coke for $5.00 each and domestic beers for $3.00. Overall the meal was very good. Salad bar included super fresh ingredients with a large variety to choose from including beef barley soup. I had two bowls and was so yummy. My main entry was the 12 oz prime rib but to my surprise it was 2"" thick and was about a whole pound! My prime rib was cooked perfectly with steamy hot ajus and a baked potato. A big high five to our server Loraine at the bar, who was very accommodating and super friendly. more

Best Steak House in town 12/28/2010

Not to say it's the best anywhere, but if you are in Big Bear and want a good steak dinner, this is the place. The service has always been good, the ambiance woodsy, rustic and what you expect from a mountain restaurant. They always have good fish specials...and their steamed artichoke appetizer is great. Fresh, cold salad bar is the best in town. Early bird specials and do yourself a favor and make a reservation for later on weekends. more

Amazing Prime Rib 12/24/2010

If you're a prime rib fan you have to try the Captains. You can cut it with a fork and the portions are HUGE. Even the petite cut is giant. Great salad bar too, and the upstairs dinning area is quietier, a much better "date" room that the downstairs. The bar drinks are good with lots of regulars hanging out every night. It's often standing room only in the bar on weekends. I've yet to have a bad meal at the Captains! more

Great mountain restaurant 12/22/2010

Great mountain restaurant. The shrimp diablo and prime rib were great. We have been coming to Big Bear for years and the Anchorage is always a favorite. more

Good Food and Excellent Staff 12/21/2010

We ate here on 2/3/10. First, the ladies of the wait staff here are pros among pros. I cannot say enough about them. So accomodating, friendly and efficient. The atmosphere here is very cozy and was on the loud side but it was a happy and festive loud, we didn't mind it at all and we sat in the open bar side! My teenage daughter and I had the scallops and the burre blanc on it was excellent. My teenage son had the sirloin steak done medium and it knocked his socks off. I tried it and you know there's an expert in the kitchen. There is a full bar and a very good wine list. The salad bar was fresh and well stocked. Ice cream sundaes for us finished things off. No cherries on top was strange but who cares. Our dining experience was excellent at this restaurant. more

So delicious!! 12/17/2010

This is a restaurant that we always go to when up in Big Bear. We always order the prime rib and it is a generous portion and is always consistent. They have intimate seating arrangements available, probably best to request when you place your reservation. The waitresses seem to be the same women who have been there for years. Oh, I couldn't possibly leave a thorough review without mentioning their clam chowder included in their salad bar. It is so delicious!!! more

Excellent Prime Rib 12/16/2010

Service and food was outstanding, the staff are all real pros. The prime rib was excellent. The soup and salad bar was a nice touch. The shrimp diablo appetizer is to die for. more
