Quite a place! A smallish venue, but the size of the menu packs a wallop. Stylish but a little old-school is how I describe Bread and Porridge. I've eaten here more than a few...

I would not say it is to die for, but this place is pretty good. Their fish tacos were surprisingly good. My boyfriend enjoyed his pancakes, though I did not care much for them. Our friend had a decent looking salad. This place was super crowded on the weekend. The staff was nice and attentive. Pros: attentive service, food is pretty good Cons: long wait more

Average food, strangely attentive staff 1/5/2007

I'm forever scouring Los Angeles for new places to dine. I decided to try my luck at Bread & Porridge. I wasn't terribly disappointed and I wasn't completely blown away either. The food is average. I had the blueberry pancakes which would have been wonderful except they were completely saturated with blueberries. The pancake itself was nice, although I wasn't able to eat too much of it. My partner had the french toast and agreed that it was ""just o.k."" - like me, she was disappointed, but she wasn't thrilled either. I really liked their choice of thick, smoked bacon - hearty and very tasty. The way I judge a restaurant is whether or not I feel I can prepare a better meal at home - in this case, I knew that I could've done a better job at home. What was strange about the experience was the waitstaff -- we had all 5 waiters come to check on us, all within a few seconds of one another. We chalked this up to the novelty of seeing a couple of ""domestic partners'"" (apparently the ""L"" word is considered inappropriate on citysearch) one of whom is tattooed heavily and pierced...it wasn't off-putting because they were extremely nice, it was just a little weird. So, for attentive waitstaff, I'd give them a 10. The food definitely rated a 5 on my scale. more

Fantastic for breakfast! 11/11/2006

Even with the bevvy of good breakfast joints in LA, this Westside hole-in-the-wall stands out! The line forms early, but it is well worth the wait. Pros: breakfast Cons: wait more

Just ate some bad pancakes 11/10/2006

All I wanted this morning was pancakes. I settled on Bread and Porridge because I remember that they had good food. The blueberry pancakes I got were crunchy on the outside, not fluffy like I expect. I went there when they first opened because they had a sign out that said, ""World's Best Breakfast."" When I left, the sign was nowhere to be seen. Cons: Got a seriously bad order of blueberry pancakes more

BEST BREAKFAST! 11/9/2006

YUUUUMMMMMM-O!!! I've been going to bread and porridge almost every weekend for the past year. It's hands down, by faaar, the best breakfast place in the los angeles area. Many omelette options, good portions, reasonable prices and, in my opinion, they serve a daaarn good french pressed coffee!!! They should really package and sell their yummy coffee... mmmMM MMMMMM!!! oh, pretty good banana bread too. oh oh oh!!! AND they also accept reservations! how great is that? Pros: omelettes, coffee, service Cons: parking more

Great breakfast place 11/4/2006

Highly recommend the pancakes (especially the blueberry or strawberry) and the gourmet flavored sausages. Also great omelets here. Nice cozy atmosphere, and the waitstaff is excellent. Weekend brunch can get crowded BUT if you call ahead they will put your name down. And if you forget to call ahead they have a huge waiting area where you can enjoy a cup of coffee. Why don't they expand the restaurant into this waiting area? They serve coffee in a French press (if you want) which is a nice touch but in my opinion their coffee isn't that tasty. more

BEST breakfast 10/11/2006

If someone asks for a good breakfast place in LA, I don't think twice about saying B&P. they have delicious, flavorfull breakfasts. is it expensive? yes, but so are most places in LA. deal with it. I don't mind paying a little more for food as long as it's good. My favorite breakfast there is Huevos Rancheros. I love their pancakes and porridge, too. I recently discovered the most heavenly tasting omlette--goat cheese, mushrooms and onions (i asked for no spinach as it tends to make omlettes watery). so freakin good. the egg dishes come with potatoes, some fruit and beans and salsa. Pros: AMAZING breakfasts, best porridge Cons: a little pricey (but worth it), charge for "real" maple syrup more

The drawbacks: there is usually a wait, but when a place is popular with great food, what do you expect? they have a waiting area with comfy sofas to chill while you wait. And one thing I don't get: they charge you for "real" maple syrup. In a place that prides itself on serving great food, why wouldn't they only serve real maple syrup? Pros: AMAZING breakfasts, best porridge Cons: a little pricey (but worth it), charge for "real" maple syrup more

great for Sunday brunch 9/12/2006

I love the omlettes here, but I agree they can be a little overpriced for what they are. Ambience and service is great, as are the very comfy booths! more
