BEST PIZZA EVER!!! 1/27/2009

I love going to Black Thorn!! My friends and I have been going there for a couple of years now and have never had a problem. The pizza is AMAZING, we always get the Chicago style. I can only eat two peices, even when I starve my self all day. I would recommend ordering the pizza before hand because it does take them awhile to make it. There is tv, dart boards, shuffle board, and an air hockey table. The pub is not dirty but it has that raw dirty look to it. It does get smokey up stairs but the down stairs is not bad at all. Pros: The pizza and atmosphere! Cons: Takes awhile for the pizza and no waitors more

great pizza! 1/18/2009

well i thought i would check this place out since it got such high reviews. the pizza was really good but i definitely learned the definition of a dive bar. the bar itself left a lot to be desired. it was very unkept and i was doubtful about eating anything there. but the pizza was good! the only thing they have is pizza, cheese bread and some salads so dont expect variety. and they do have an air hockey table, which i thought was cool. i dont think i'll go back because of the dirtiness. no pizza is worth that lol Pros: great pizza Cons: the whole place was dirty more

Anyone that wrote a bad review about the Black Thorn, Should Stay Home and Cook! 12/6/2008

My husband and his buddy have been on a mission since Adamo's closed to find the best pizza in town. It's funny that I never get to go on their rendezvous do to schedule conflicts, however I do get to sample the left overs! Pros: Pizza Cons: Arrogant Customers more

A jewel among dive bars, fantastic pizza, unique atmosphere 8/26/2008

Dave DiFani is not only responsible for bringing great pizza and fun softball to South St, Louis, he is also to blame for many marriages and several couples moving from suburban STL to the city once they discovered this jewel of a neighborhood. Dave was a true pioneer and hung in there to build this business when the neighborhood was less than desirable. Even through the carjackings, muggings, etc. of 20 years ago, the Thorn was a place to be. If this were in Chicago or New York all of you hipsters bitching about poor service and long cooking times would be raving about what an awesome place this was to meet. The Black Thorn is a place you must visit when in St. Louis and while you're there yuo might ask Dave to borrow one of his favorite books or play Battling Tops. This is an original place in a world of boring sameness. If you don't like unique, go visit some place where they wear 30 pieces of ""flair"" more

gotta try it 7/9/2008

Yes, you have to wait for 45 minutees to an hour to get your pizza, and Yes there are no waitresses. But, it;s a fun place to hang out drink beer and eat a different kind of pizza with a style all it's own, It's not quite a Chicago style pizza but it's filled with a ton of cheese and has thick crust. It's got a little extra kick to it, and if you eat more than two pieces your going to regret it. more

The place ruined me 7/4/2008

Not ""kid friendly?"" You've got to be kidding. I can take my 11-year old grand daughter there, and have for years, with no problems from the staff. I have two nephews (16 and 13) who show up every time they know we're going. They go crazy on the air hockey table and any other game they can get on, and they can belly up to the bar to put another soda on the tab. We've been there countless times, with no problems from the staff. Pros: pizza, great staff, Guiness in Imperial pints Cons: Yuppies slumming, Greeks and ""beautiful people"" more

It's a hole with great pizza 6/16/2008

The interior is dank, dark and yellow from years of smokers. The bathroom is crummy. The games are well worn. In short, it is a hole in the wall bar. But the pizza is the best deep dish in St. Louis. Don't bring your kids, it is a bar after all. Take another reviewer's advice and call ahead if you want your pizza shortly after you arrive. The deep dish pizza takes a long time to cook. It's as simple as that. Pros: Pizza Cons: Interior could use some cleaning and updating (especially the bathrooms) more

The secret is calling ahead. 5/15/2008

I've been going to Black Thorn for the past 3 or 4 years now and what you have to realize before you even consider Black Thorn is that you need to order at least an hour before you go. If you don't have that kind of time, then don't go. When you place your order, they'll tell you how long it will take so adjust your travel if you don't want to sit around and have a few beers/play some games while you wait. This is not Pizza Hut, Imo's, Papa John's, or even Elicia's. You will have to wait for awhile but is it so bad to slow down in life? Pros: Great pizza, good selection of beer, very affordable, games while you wait Cons: Can be smoky at times more

Does not meet the hype 3/18/2008

Unless you are willing to wait 1-2 hours for mediocre pizza, avoid Black Thorn. They are also not kid friendly. I have seen them kick out responsible young customers who did not have an ID on them. The restaurant is also very smoky. Black Thorn is also small and will not be able to handle a large group. The servers have been rude the last two times I have gone. All in all, I would avoid Black Thorn if possible. more

What a bummer 3/17/2008

My husband and I recently went for pizza at Black Thorn after a year and a half. We had been craving it and finally went back only to be really disappointed. We used to love it and had taken many friends there over the years. We ordered our pizza with extra sauce as that was always my favorite part and not only was it not extra sauce, there was hardly enough sauce to cover the pizza, actually bare in spots. The other toppings were minimal also. Lots of thick crust and minimal toppings makes for a very dry pizza. We were really bummed and are not going to go back, unless we hear something changes, which I hope it does. We know the pizza takes a while and that is no problem, but just to get a drink at the bar, my husband had to stand in a line for over 10 minutes. Overall, not worth it. Cons: pizza and service for sure more

Avoid at all costs 2/28/2008

Black Thorn used to be the best pizza in St. Louis, but I don't know what happened. Somehow its been lost. The dreamy cheese the wonderfully chewy crust. All Gone! Its a real shame. And the service, well thats another story. No one should be subjected to that kind of abuse. There also used to be a wonderful crowd of quirky folks that hung out there, now its the tragically hip and wannabes. I cannot recommend this place to anyone. Pros: What? There were some? Cons: pretty much everything more

Thumb's up 11/3/2007

The pizza here is not for the light hearted, literally. It may damage you if you're not in good health. The food is very rich; their pizza is loaded with cheese and other vices. Personally, I'm a sauce fan. Their pizza sauce is good and it's unfortunate they don't use more of it. I recommend asking for extra sauce and less cheese. One word of warning is that the service is a little slow. Things take time but most people agree, myself included, that it's well worth the wait. The place is particularly great for groups. The environment is comfortable and, best of all, they have darts. I love darts. Pros: A lot for your money Cons: Perhaps too much for your waist line more

Best deep dish in the Lou 3/19/2007

For anyone new to the area planning a visit to this south-side hangout I felt the need to provide some input. The place is what is... and it does it beautifully. So for those of you who provided negative reviews and to anyone who has never been, please take note? If you are looking for anything resembling a standard restaurant experience, please do NOT go to Black Thorn. If you are looking for service from a teenybopper waitress with a cute apron and tons of flair, please do NOT go here. If you are looking for a family place to take the kids, do NOT visit BTP. If you are in a big hurry, please steer clear of Black Thorn. However, if you are looking for a serious, thick crust pie with clog-your-arteries capability while you enjoy a solid (and cheap!) beer selection, head to Black Thorn immediately. If you are out to have a leisurely time with friends in a truly relaxed setting, then head to Black Thorn. Black Thorn Pub is and (I pray) always will be a truly fantastic neighborhood bar and pizza joint that forces one to slow down and hang out in an uncomplicated (read: perfectly dingy in all the right ways) setting. Black Thorn is a great deep-dish pizza and a truly fun, uncomplicated atmosphere. Pros: Great deep dish; good beer selection; cheap Cons: Requires som patience; can get crowded - you can call ahead to order your pizza more

Horrible Service, So-So Pizza 2/23/2007

In hopes of finding a place to satisfy my yearning for Chicago-pizza, I was once again disappointed. The pizza is not as good as it is hyped up to be and definitely not worth the wait, poor service, or incredibly smokey atmosphere. By the way did I mention the horrible service? By far the worse service of any restaurant in St. Louis. I have tried this place 3 times in hopes that I got unlucky on my first visit, but every experience was the same. I will never go there again. Cons: HORRIBLE Service, way too smokey more

Long wait but yummy in the tummy 11/21/2006

So long as you aren't in a hurry the wait is definitely worth it. We always get the Chicago style with pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms. Love the cheese, and you don't even have to order extra cheese to get a ton of it. The atmosphere is VERY casual. Relax and play some bar trivia, or shuffle board. If you like this place check out Lemmons on Gravois. They serve the same pizza there and similar atmosphere with a little more room. The service was very friendly. Pros: full belly when you leave, delicious food, great atmosphere Cons: a little cramped on space more

The 2 Hour Pizza 8/10/2006

Black Thorn was what I use to call the only true pizza place in St Louis. Being from the west coast I was not too fond of the pancake type paper thin pizzas that are typical to St Louis. Black Horn was rich, creamy, spicy and fresh-- one piece weighed a pound! However, due to recent kitchen staff changes (at least that is what the management has told me) my last three visits were double the time (2+ hours per pizza despite the 45 min promise) Toppings are scarce, service is less than lousy, and the pizza is always over-done.. If you decide to eat at Black Thorne, make sure you dont eat on a glass table... if you drop a piece of the crust it will probably break your glass. Pros: Your local neighborhood Pizza shop- descent Draft Beer Selection Cons: Bad food, bad service, unpleasant atmosphere more

something different in the pizza world 6/20/2006

i like this place. small neigborhood joint tucked into residential street corner. would've never thought to look for it there. bar girl can improve her customer service skills for pickups, waaaayyyy toooo smoky and the pizza is great. nothing fancy tho the flavors and quality shine. Pros: good pizza Cons: poor customery service for pickups, too smoky to stay longer than 5 min and not die more

The Best Chicago style pizza! 6/7/2006

The Chicago style pizza is so good! You have to wait for like 45 minutes but it is worth it! Get there early to grab a seat or you might was well take your pie home to eat it. Hole-in-the-wall atmosphere in a slightly scary neighborhood but a good time is always had by all! Pros: Great pizza! Fun relaxed atmosphere Cons: not enough seating - scary neighborhood more
