Best

The Black Cow cafe is a great little restaurant in Montrose. Items are inespensive, but SO tasty. They're not just a restaurant, though. They offer a wonderful coffee/tea/malt/e...

Worst

I have been going to the Black Cow for quite a while now being that I am a resident of the area. However, I may have had the worst experience at a resturaunt that I have EVER had....

Busy, but worth it. 7/28/2008

I went to the Black Cow last Saturday around lunch time and it was very busy, but I have to say it was worth the small battle to get in. I had the best vanilla latte ever. (Kudos to the barista, I think his name was Josh.) I've been going to starbucks for so long I think I forgot what good coffee really tastes like. There is lots of free parking behind the cafe, and with a 9 hour limit you can take your time and explore Montrose. It's is a great little nook to visit in LA. Pros: Lots of parking, friendly service, good food. Cons: busy more

Unmemorable food, good coffees 6/30/2008

I have frequented this establishment many times and it appears that not a whole lot changes. The food is average and unremarkable. I would recommend the coffee area where you can have ice cream in your coffee drinks. Other than that, the place is LOUD when it is full, and appears to be a senior hangout. Pros: I wouldn't go out of my way for this... Cons: The wait sometimes is bad. more

nice atmosphere good value 6/2/2008

This restaurant had an interesting menu including pastas, meats, sandwiches, burgers and even some mexican inspired dishes. I had the rotisserie chicken which was cooked well but could have been more spiced for my liking. It was a great deal $14 for half chicken with cornbread and two sides so I had lots of leftovers! great house salad as well! This had a friendly atmosphere, good for groups and families and there wasn't a wait on a saturday night. They also had a great looking cafe with a broad selection of coffee items, some great looking ice creams and desserts. Overall good time, good service good price. Pros: No wait on Saturday night, good selection, good value Cons: food was good not outstanding more

**HORRIBLY RUDE SERVERS & CUSTOMER UNFRIENDLY POLICIES** 12/26/2007

I went there with a friend for breakfast the day after Christmas. When we tried to order, the waitress unapolagetically anounced that we were ""too late for breakfast"" and told us ""you'll have to order lunch"" (it was several minutes after 11:00 am). We expressed surprise. She was adamant that the rules prohibited us from ordering breakfast. While we waited for her to return, we realized that the diners seated at every other table in the restaurant were eating breakfast. We watched numerous breakfast plates being brought out from the kitchen and being served to other patrons. I questioned the waitress again, and I pointed out that breakfast plates were being brought from the kitchen at that very moment. The waitress was hostile and completely unhelpful. She told me that the rules are that no one can order breakfast after 11:00 am under any circumstances. I told her that I thought that's a dumb rule. The waitress replied, ""Don't be mad at me, I don't make the rules, I only enforce them."" At 11:10 am, we walked out without ordering. Pros: RUDE SERVERS, CUSTOMER UNFRIENDLY POLICIES more

Eh.... 7/27/2007

I live in the area and had wanted to go there for quite some time but had never been. I finally went for breakfast and it wasn't what I had expected. It was a weekday and we were seated right away and there seemed to be lots of the menu so I was excited! BUT I soon came to notice that most of the items on the menu were eggs! I can make the best eggs at home so I like to eat something other than the usual when i go out. Waffles was my choice, and the description sounded so yummy! BUT the small print read ""Only on weekends."" I have to watch out for small print for my credit card now I gotta do it when I eat out too?! I ended up with eggs, something I didn't really want. And the waitress was being too nice-a fake kind of nice. I didn't appreciate that much either. I'm willing to give it another try but only because its in the Montrose Shopping Area and i find that to be a nice relaxing place. more

Black Cow? No thanks... 1/27/2007

I have been going to the Black Cow for quite a while now being that I am a resident of the area. However, I may have had the worst experience at a resturaunt that I have EVER had. I love the food there and understand there is a wait, however when I we went there this time we actually walked out before we could eat. When we got there at 7:15 and put our name in, not too many tables were opening us then one table finally did. Then the hostess sat someone who clearly came in AFTER we did! By then it was 7:45, when I confronted the hostess about it she told me that they had called ahead to put their name on the list!!! Here we are waiting 30 min. and they are there 5 min and are sat right away. The manager told me that they do it sometimes and that they really don't like to do it. SO DONT DO IT!!!! I was so frustrated with them that we walked out and went and ate over at Zen Asian Bistro (which by the way, sat us right away). So while the food is good, it isn't that good! I highly recommend not going to a place that does not practice ethical business. more

Great food in Montrose 11/21/2006

I love black cow cafe. The only drawback is that it's usually crowded and there's a wait. However, it's worth it once you try their rotisserie chicken and mexican mocha. Their rosemary bread is unlike anything i've ever tried. the service is decent, but the great food makes up for that. more

What happened? 7/29/2006

First, they got rid of Groundwork coffee, imo, the best coffee in LA, a big bummer. I was SO looking forward to my great cup of joe, only to find they had replaced GW with a really mediocre brand. Pros: Great location Cons: Bad service, HORRIBLE coffee (used to be really good), sub-par food compared with previous experiences. more

Love it so much, we call it ""The Cow"" 3/7/2006

Black Cow Cafe was a little far for lunch, so my coworkers and I reserved it for celebratory lunches. I cant personally described the menu, because Ive always ordered the same thing: a grilled tri-tip sandwich, with a house side salad and a Mexicali coffee to go. I'm salivating just thinking about it. I also like to sneak a bite of someone elses zucchini bread, which I believe comes with the salads. The Cow serves up quality ingredients in unexpected combinations; even the house salad comes with sunflower seeds. Everyone Ive brought there has fallen in love with it and returned with someone else. On weekdays it gets very, very crowded, so if you go for lunch, arrive by 11:30 or after 1. The prices are exceptionally reasonable for the quality. During a financially lean time I brought my Mom for Mothers Day, and she still raves about it. Pros: Great Food, Delicious Coffee, Reasonable Prices Cons: Crowded, but worth it, Closed Mondays more

One of the best breakfasts in Los Angeles 7/31/2005

Fantastic fresh-ground coffees, terrific egg dishes, and world class French toast. We drive all the way up from Hollywood -- it's that good. Montrose is a quaint American small town in the middle of L.A. Very kid-friendly (they give the kids Wicky Stix!), The Cow can get crowded. Pros: Friendly, Homey, Coffee-Freak Heaven Cons: crowded more

Chix, sdwch, salad, bkfst, coffee, XLNT! 6/30/2003

I don't go out as much as I used to, but I know when I go here, I'm happy with whatever I order. Coffee from the coffee bar is great - I get the house iced decaf with sweet cream. California Chicken Salad is my favorite, and I'm more of a meat and potatoes guy. Great BBQ chicken, too. Generous portions no matter what you order, attentive service. If you have room after dinner, don't forget the Fosselman's ice cream! For breakfast. the banana nut French toast is heaven. It's a little pricey, but it's worth it for what you get. Daily specials keep a regular like me out of a rut. Bring a close friend. You can't go wrong. Pros: Great food, Great coffee, Great service Cons: A wait Fridays, wkds, A little pricey, But pros beat cons more

Great breakfast and salads 9/13/2002

Black Cow is my family's ""Well we could always go to..."" restaurant. They have something for everyone on the menu, and while nothing we've ordered has ever been terrible, few things are really worth raving about either. The salads are particularly good, however - try the California chicken salad with candied pecans, avocado and bleu cheese crumbles. Breakfast is good too - the cornflake-crusted french toast is awesome. When it gets crowded though, the turnover is slow and you wait FOREVER. Pros: broad menu, full espresso bar, good parking Cons: can get crowded more

Good sandwiches and even better salads.. 7/11/2002

That's what I remember from this restaurant. It's a cozy place to eat before the lunch hour or dinner hour rush. But when it's crowded it's just too noisey for me and the service tends to get worse. But it really is a nice place to eat and you can come here for an Iced Blended Mocha to go. Then sip your iced coffee while stolling the street of this quaint little town. more

solid performer 5/20/2002

I've been to the Black Cow several times now. Each time, I've come away thinking, ""Not bad, but..."" The Black Cow is a work in progress--both culinarily and service-wise. This restaurant serves up stick-to-your-ribs comfort food like roasted chicken, tri-tip beef, mashed potatoes, and corn pudding. It does most things mostly correctly, but needs to work on overall execution. Having said that, I don't want people to avoid the Black Cow. It's a fine place for a casual but still nice dinner. Stick to the classics, don't fill up on the bread, and you'll do just fine. more
