Editorial review from Citysearch 12/28/2013

\r Very bad experience for my dogs. Had to board them for 4 weeks due to a flooded home. I visited my dogs for the forst 2 weeks, and noticed they were losing weight. I asked them to feed my lab puppy and 11 year old terrier more. I was called out of town for a work project thats when the trouble started. I called to check on my dogs and was told they were fine. I was also told that my lab puppy was injured on his nose and that he was now very ""dog aggressive"" not his sweet lab puppy nature at all. I picked up my dogs today and my 60 pound lab puppy lost 20 pounds during his stay at barkington inn and looks like he has been starved, so does my ELEVEN year old terrier. My puppy was so hungry he grabbed bones from the Barkington inn lobby display. I was beyond apalled and crushed that my dogs had been treated so badly. My dogs are not the same at all, my lab puppy shys away from my hand like he has been hit, something he never did before, I never hit my dogs I use a spray bottle of water and vinegar to discipline. I am worried that he may have lasting damage due to malnourishment. My dogs were so hungry they ate for 20 mins and ate several bowls of kibble, boiled rice, eggs and broth. They were literally STARVING! The manager was rude and told me it was my fault that they fed the amounts I told them to feed. This is impossible, because they have lost so much weight. They had the wrong weights down for my dogs and were feeding my 60 pound dog less than he needed and when I brought this to the attention of staff they said he looks fine. His ribs are showing and his hip bones are so pronounced he looks like a starving street dog! He is lethargic, has a bloody face, and is so scared he is not the same dog. My 11 year old terrier is so thin, I have never seen her look like this before. Both dogs stunk like a sewer and had feces in between their toes, very dirty. Needless to say I would never leave my dogs at barkington inn again and would never recommend that any one leave a pet at this place. I asked for a call back from the CEO today and the manager said it was not customary to disturb him on the weekend, very uncaring. The manager raised her voice to me several times and as the other reviews indicate the rudness is beyond belief. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS AT BARKINGTON INN EVER! I have pictures and video of the dogs and the condition in which they left barkington inn ... NEVER, NEVER, NEVER leave your dogs in this dog hell. more

do not take your animal here 11/27/2009

we brought our two dogs here when we were unable to book a run at our normal kennel. when we picked them up both dogs were covered in urine and reeked like a dirty hamster cage. not only that but it is quite expensive at $25/day which doesnt include any play time for your dog. play time cost an extra $9 per 15 minutes. so in short do not take your animals here; take them to camp bow wow in league city or vance murphy veterinarian in clear lake. Cons: lots more

Don't even think about this place 3/9/2009

I made a reservation to leave my two Yorkies at Barkington for three and a half days in January. I had used them before about ten years ago and thought this would be a good choice for such a short time. What a mistake. I arrived a day early to pick my dogs up and am so glad they didn't have to spend another minute here. Both dogs had been groomed the day before they were dropped off, but I could spell the urine on them as they were brought out from the kennel. The paper collars around their necks had become tangled in their coats by the adhesive strip ends to the point where the female couldn't have turned her head without pulling hair out. The attendant who brought them out sneered and said that the female was ""skitsy - not right"". It was obvious that this normally pleasant little dog was scared out of her mind. When I got them home, I realized that the whites of her eyes were deep red - a sign that she had choked at some point. I attempted to contact the kennel several times by phone and e-mail but got no reponse. This is unacceptable for a facility which relies on the trust of pet owners. I wish I had read these reviews before I made the choice to leave my dogs there. I relied on a past reputation and past experience which are no longer applicable. Take your pet somewhere else! 1/5/2009

This was my first experience with this kennel. It will be the last. I left my dog in their care for 5 days. more

Horrible. If you even remotely care about your pets, take them elsewhere!!!! 10/5/2008

I started taking my pets to Barkington about 10 years ago and it WAS the best place around. Now I would not send Kujo there!!!! The place is disgusting, you can smell the stench from the parking lot! I agree the staff is very unprofessional, I once called and someone answered ""Pink Poodles and P*$$ies, how may I help you?"". I was mortified. I do agree that since Trish Reed left and the whole staff went with her (about 5 years ago) it is no better than a pound now. I overheard the 'manager', a frumpy looking man in jeans and a ratty t-shirt, calling to inform someone that their dog had escaped and had been run over by a car on HWY 3!!!! What's worse, I heard someone down the side hall talking about it happening ""again""!!!! Pros: None that I can think of. Cons: Filthy, smelly, rude & immature staff, they don't seem to care at all! more

Very disappointing care 6/23/2008

When Trish Reed ran this place it was great but after she left it went downhill. They over medicated my dogs, he got an infection and I spent $300 in vet bills getting him well. They have nothing but young kids in there and I don't think they really care and the turn over rate is amazing. Please if you love your pets do NOT ever take them to Barkington Inn. Do research and don't let the website fool you. Cons: Very young staff, huge turnover, not caring more

Thought it was better than a kennel, but it really wasn't. 11/27/2007

I was really disappointed in the kennels they used for boarding. I saw their web site and it made it look like it was this great luxury place. I guess it is if you have a tiny dog or a cat that can go in one of those little ""suite"" things. My dog was bigger so he got a kennel. It smelled awful! Like the pound. It looked just like that to me too. Pros: Easy to get to from Friendswood Cons: Some staff was rude. Unprofessional appearance of some of the staff. Smelled bad. more

service has gotten really bad 4/30/2007

I have used Barkington for many years and have found that the service and quality of care has gotten really bad. I was displeased with the appearance of the staff. I was displeased that they went through 3 times the amount of food that I do at home. They did not call me when the dogs ran out of their food, I just happened to call and they told me they were out of food. They did go and buy the dog food for the puppys so they could stay on their same diet. The dogs were bathed the day before they were scheduled to go home and then were sprayed with a perfume to try to cover it up. I will not use them again Pros: good location Cons: improper looking staff....improper puppy care more
