Amazing! 1/27/2012

My son has been attending BMAA for some months now and he is going to take his 1st belt test next month. We are both very excited about the progress that he has made. He has participated in 1 tournament already. He did not win, but boy do they know how to make everyone feel like winners. He and his opponent were the only children in their age group and belt class. He didn’t leave with a trophy but he did get a medal and patches to wear on his uniform. I am soooo proud of him! He hung in there although he was a little disappointed. And toward the end of the tournament one of the older guys (teenager) and Mr. Gary (the owner) put their heads together they came up with the most amazing idea. The young man wanted "a match" with my 4yr old. When my 4yr old "won", he stood up and the judge raised his little fist in the air.... he had so much pride in his eyes. Thanks to Mr. Gary and his staff my son has more motivation then I have ever seen him have. Surely my son didn’t have the skills or strength to go up against that young man, but because this gym cares about the children they teach they do kind things like this to make everyone proud at the end of the day. This gym is everything I expected and more. There was a time that I thought I would have to pull my son from this program due to transportation and class schedule but Mr. Gary worked with me and allowed my son to come on different days with no hesitation. I am so grateful that this gym offers flexibility with the BJJ classes. My son needed this class and I needed him to take it at this dynamic gym. The skills learned here are a necessity for some kids...... some kids like mine. more

Something for Everyone 6/12/2011

I joined BMAA shortly after moving to Baltimore for my job. I had never done any type of martial arts before but the instructors at BMAA were wonderful and really made me feel at home. There is something here for everyone whether you're a kid or an adult, want to learn martial arts or just get into shape. I was able to try three completely different classes - a martial arts class (aikido), a fitness class (women's boot camp) and zumba. When work started to conflict with the class I originally signed up for, the owner was very helpful and worked with me to find other options that would fit my schedule. I highly recommend BMAA to anyone in the area! more

Batlimore Martial Arts Academy Recommendation 4/7/2011

My son, Rayan Overcast, has attended the Baltimore Martial Arts academy for approximately 2 1/2 years. He is 7 years old and just achieved the rank of brown belt in the mixed martial arts and junior Brazilian jiu-jitsu program. My wife and I are extremely pleased by the overall instruction, direction, and positive messaging he receives from Mr. Gary Berger and the other instructors. We first brought Rayan to the academy hoping that the instruction he received would help instill discipline, confidence, positivity, and assertiveness. We feel, without a doubt, that our purpose is and has been achieved. I cannot recall a class by Mr. Berger that did not involved a discussion about respecting parents, the importance of doing good in school, the importance of listening, following direction, and so much more. He has a way of connecting and communicating with kids in particular. Beyond that, his method of of instruction is very age appropriate and scales according to the particular stage, acumen, and overall skill of his individual students. Mr. Berger also has a very accomplished school competition team which my son is a part of and, beyond Baltimore Martial Arts tournaments (which there are a few), he always travels to these regional tournaments to lead, coach, and support. I have grown to know Mr. Berger over the past 2 1/2 years and must say that he is very approachable, likable, and is always there and eager to provide feedback. If you are looking for a first rate martial arts academy, look no further. I highly recommend Baltimore Martial Arts. Thank you very much. John Overcast more

Best Martial arts class my kids have ever attended 4/3/2011

Our experience with Baltimore Martial Arts Academy has been extremely positive. The teachers are tremendous with the kids. Our kids attended several different area martial arts classes and we find Baltimore Martial Arts to be the best, most convenient. It is the type of class we had been looking for. The focus is not just about learning movements. They focus on real life experience, teach the kids about being helpful and respectful at home and with their parents as we as teaching the kids the true meaning of martial arts, all at a level the kids understand. Their work has been tremendous with my kids who are at different skill levels. They focus on developing fundamentals, strength and skills and overtime putting them all together in complicated movements. The teachers speak at the kid’s level, so they understand what they need to do. They provide a lot of individual attention to make sure they learn before they move them to the next level. Each class so far has had multiple teachers that often breakout in smaller groups for practice sessions. My Kids love going to the classes. As a result my kid’s confidence has increased and I often hear them quote Mr. Gary on things he tries to teach the kids. They also provide a lot of different types of martial arts classes at times convenient for us. We have a family membership plan and I have started to attend classes at the same schedule as my kids. Something I had always wanted to do, and never got the time to get it done. Now I can. My Wife also loves the Zumba classes, specially that she can attend and leave our one year old at the day care center. I highly recommend Baltimore Martial Arts Academy, from the variety of types of martial arts, to convenient schedules and the skill level of the teachers. We couldn’t be happier. more

Great Place for Kids 2/11/2011

We've been taking our kids to Baltimore Martial Arts Academy for four years now and it's a great place for kids to learn a little about self control and discipline while they learn martial arts and have fun at the same time. Gary and his staff are great with children and always give them a little play time along with the instruction. They also encourage good behavior at home by rewarding the kids for helping out at home and getting good grades. BMAA has programs for kids of all ages as well as adults -- definitely a positive experience all around. more

Jujitsu or Girl Scouts 2/9/2011

I can't say enough good things about the school. My daughter is enrolled in the Brazilian Jujitsu class. At one point we had to give her the choice between Jujitsu or Girl scouts. She chose Jujitsu. She loves the fact, that after every class she is rewarded with a stripe on her belt. She is so excited to test for her next belt. As a parent I love the fact that the instructors know who she is, something I didn't find in Girl Scouts. more

Aikido at BMAA 1/8/2011

Whether you're an existing martial arts student looking for a new place to train or someone who is interested in trying a martial art, I highly recommend stopping in and check out the Baltimore Martial Arts Academy. They have a spacious, new facility with highly qualified and personable instructors in a number of different martial art styles. As a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Aikido, I have trained under Instructor Jeff Mims for a number of years. He brings to the school a unique level of experience in several martial arts styles which gives his Aikido students a sound and effective understanding of the art of self defense. In addition to the study of Aikido, I have also studied other styles at the school and I found the same positive experience as I did in the Aikido classes: Experienced, well trained instructors who put the safety of the student above all else. I encourage anyone who wants to learn more about this school to stop in and talk to Gary or Jeff. You won't regret it! more
