Unnecessary procedures, that didn't cure my animals. 10/14/2011

Dr. Perez always seems to be pushing for more analysis...perhaps he's just trying to be thorough, but common sense should prevail. We had some tests run on our 21-year-old cat, who was clearly dying of old age. He said her liver enzymes were elevated at a 'six' and should've been lower. When I asked him what 'six' meant, he couldn't really give me an explanation, as if he didn't really know what the numbers meant. He wanted to run more extensive (and expensive) tests, but c'mon...I probably had the oldest cat in the Bronx...it was her time to leave us. My dog had a severe ear infection. He insisted the animal had to anesthetized so he could take a good look in his ear and clean it out. $250 and a week later, my dog's ears were bleeding. We brought him back, and he basically admitted he gave him the wrong medicine, and once again insisted on anesthesia. Long story short, I spent $560 total, treated my dog religiously for 2 weeks with the medicines he prescribed, and the ear infection remained. Took him to another vet...infection was gone in 5 days. New vet said anesthetizing my dog for an ear infection was 'a little strange.' more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS WACKO. 2/13/2011

This place is the worst! My dog has been going to this Vet for 6 Yrs and the doctor still does not know her name, My dog had a eye problem and need surgery the doctor first quoted one price then when I came back with the money he then raise the price another $500. I already had the first $500. yet this doctor who has been treating my dog for 6 YRS would not do a payment plan. The vet told me that without the surgery my dog would go blind, and he had no feelings for my dog.. This Vet has been paid by me for years and still had no compassion for my dog. They are truley Money Hungry, and they do not care for your animals, you have to watch them with your pets. I believe he is the type of Doctor that will do something to your pet just to have you come back and spend more money.. BEWARE OF AVALON ANIMAL HOSPITAL. Did I mention that this same Vet took care of my dogs Mother (she's now dead). more

Job well done 2/12/2010

True what the other reviews say....Dr. Perez is not the most empathetic vet I've ever seen. But he saved my 20-year-old cat's life...delicate surgery and good follow-up treatment. They ask for the money upfront because this is a poor neighbhoorhood, and they've been burned before...many people used to abandon their pets there after treatment rather than pay their bill. Pros: competent vet Cons: money first, pet second more

Don't go here 10/30/2009

After going to Dr. Perez for 6 years really because of convenience because if close to my home. The last straw was being charged a follow up fee of $30 after paying $522 for a ear infection, medicine and stiches to close a wound that my yorkie had. We went back to have stiches removed and he charged me for checking his ear I should not have been charged for a follow up, I had a poodle for 17 years always took him to ASPCA I was never charged for a follow up and asked around about it and I should not have been charged for a follow up visit. Also he is very distracted asked me about 3 times if he had his vaccines while holding his records in his hands, also always being interrupted for the asst or secretary. He over charges on medicine also don't buy it thought him go to petmeds. Pros: Near whereI live Cons: Dr. only cares about money more

No concern 5/31/2009

The vet lacked people skills. He showed minimal concern for pet care after 2 visits . My cat suffered from feline lukemia and it was time to make a humane decision, so we decided it was in her best interest. Before the completion of the very difficult procedure I was asked for payment. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I agree with the other review who stated all they see is dollar signs. If you are looking for a compassionate vet to care for your animal, DO NOT GO THERE. I repeat DO NOT GO THERE. Pros: short wait time Cons: not compassionate more

Friendly office; good vet care 6/28/2008

I took two cats to Avalon for general checkups. Reception was friendly and attending vet asked questions about general health and vaccination history. Appointment was on time and waiting area was a decent size. Spoke to another client in waiting room who had been bringing pets to Avalon for over a decade. I feel comfortable knowing that I have found a dependable vet to care for my cats since I will be in the neighorhood for a long time. Pros: Convenient hours; nice size waiting room more

Not what I would call a vet 10/30/2007

If you want a vet who first introduces himself to you, introduces himself to your pet, who really pays attention to your animal, tries to make friends with it, and is concerned about the welfare of the animal, this is not the place to take your pet. First impression: All the doctor sees is dollar signs. (e.g., I was charged for an emergency visit in the middle of the day even though I had called earlier specifically asking for an appointment. Shady.) Last and lasting impression: This vet is too uptight and angry to be a vet. Pros: a regular visit is +/- $35, plenty of street parking Cons: vet's bad attitude; lack of professionalism more
