its really far away from denver and its really expensive and people there think they are better than everyone else! drive me insane.

Heaven on Earth 12/25/2006

A terrific place to enjoy an outdoors-person lifestyle. Skiing, boarding, rafting, fishing, walking, biking, concerts, nightlife, wildlife, reindeer, sled dogs. You name it. In the summer, bat a softball at the field near Maroon Creek and the hospital and the ball goes a mile. The locals are salt-of-the-earth and the city feels like a security blanket. It's a recommended alternative to a therapist for whatever ails you. Aspen is a gift from God and a little piece of heaven on earth. Go there once before you die to experience the afterlife, but make sure your credit card has a zero balance. Take a ski or board lesson at Buttermilk if you're a beginner. If more advanced, glide the hidden treasure of Highlands for some solitary steeps. Afterward, go to Johnnie Mac's for a Trucker sandwich with a Yahoo, and you'll see why people from around the world are drawn to this perfect little town. Keeps Me Coming Back 1/19/2006

over 300"" of snow yearly, great groomed runs, back-country style runs just a short hike away on most mountains. Buttermilk has a large park, while Ajax and Highlands have some crazy steeps and homicidal bumps. Snowmass is tha best of them all, with every variety of terain you may be searching for. All 4 mountains are easily accessible from any of tha others via their fantastic shuttle services. Tha nightlife is greats with most bars staying open untill 2am, and tha resturants are world class. On ajax and highlands there is a bit of a snobby feel, but that is easily overcome; but Snowmass village it is far more laid back. Overall, tha reason i keep coming back is for tha people; From every continent on tha planet, tha people are tha nicest and friendliest i have ever met. I've skied many resorts across the U.S. but Aspen is special. Beginners have Buttermilk all to themselves. Snowmass is a Vail type mountain with varying terrains, many snowboarders and lots and lots of ski schools. Snowmass does offer the Hanging Valley Wall to those double diamond searching for something different. My favorite is Steeplechase at Highlands. Some of the best double diamond terrain I've ever skied and you get it all to yourself since NO ONE ever skies Highlands. The bottom half of Highlands has great blue cruiser runs and let's not forget the bump run above the on mountain restaurant. For those adventurers, you can hike up to the now open Highland Bowl. Aspen (Ajax) mountain is steep but has the gondola, great runs and the beautiful town of Aspen at it's footsteps. And don't leave Aspen without eating the Hickory House ribs, best in the U.S.!! more

Skied them all 11/10/2005

I have skied most of the ski areas in North Ameirca. For a ski vacation Aspen) has the greatest ski package available. The 4 mountains have all kinds of terrian. From Groomed, back Bowls. The people working at Aspen are great, The snow quality can be 3-4 feet of light fluff. If you want to ski in a wilderness setting ski the back of Snowmass, a week after fresh snow on the mtn and the back still has freshies. The restuarants in this valley and on the mountain would make major cities in this country jealous. Go to Gwyn's on Snowmass for a breakfast experience no mountain willever duplicate. And while there get her brownie, my wife has Gweyn's cookbook and has been making them for years. Gwyn is always approacable. Skiing is expensive everywhere. Aspen is Fabulous 11/10/2005

Aspen's four mountains offers something for everyone - from greens to double blacks with free shuttles to deliver you to the slopes if you dont stay slopeside! When the sun sets, you can enjoy outstanding world class dining or cook in your condo by the fire. Try the Gant condos or Little Nell in Aspen for great places to stay. Snowmass is expanding and within a few years will have an even better gondola. The weather is mild compared to Montana resorts and the Denver locals dont clog the lines - its just far enough away! The locals are super friendly. Only two negatives - some of the local bars and restaurant owners are retiring and selling out and the airlines are not competitive - its cheaper to fly to Vail and rent a car to drive 70 miles to Aspen. Aspen is truly unique - the skiing is ridiculous if you take a minute to ask where the best snow is for the day. The town is a real town - not just a resort village. People are great there - never experienced the snobbishness that it has a reputation for. More expensive than some ski towns, but I think that keeps people away so the slopes are relatively empty. Everyone who is dissing Aspen for being too far is crazy! Not all of us live in Denver - so for those of us who have to fly anyway to ski, Aspen is great! The snow is wonderful and the staff there is excellent! I've never felt like they were snobby and are always so willing to help you. It's gorgeous and people who don't like it are just jealous they aren't skiing there more

An Amazing Ski Retreat 12/11/2004

Either drive or fly into Aspen and the surrounding area and you will discover best skiing around. There is a huge selection of terrain, running anywhere from green to double black, powder to groomed trails to halfpipes. IF for some reason you can't find a run you like on the mountain you're at, try one of the THREE other mountains your lift ticket is good at. Nobody can can say the skiing is limited. The area is also great for snowboarding. Snowmass features a halfpipe and snowboard park. If you're a beginner, try out the best Ski/Snowboard school in the country. When you're done skiing you can head into town which, despite its popularity, retains a small-town feel. There is plenty of shopping, and lots of great restaurants. No lift lines! 12/11/2004

$72 for a lift ticket may be somewhat pricey but it keeps the lift lines short or nonexsistent and ensures powder days a week after it snows. Buttermilk, one of the four resorts, is my favorite place to take my kids. They have the best ski school program in the world and I can ride the X games perfectly groomed pipe with no one around all day long! It is well worth the money when I think about how much time I spend in lift lines everywhere else. I have to say that the Aspen/Snowmass area has the four best mountains in the country. Not only do all the mountains have beginner terain, they also all have expert terrain that is amazing! Snowmass has everything, my favorite mountain. Snowmass and Buttermilk also have awesome terrain parks with so many jumps and rails! The nightlife is definetly in Aspen. The scenery is also unbelieveable. And one more thing, Aspen/Snowmass is NOT filled with snotty, rich people. Pros: terrain, snow fall, scenery more

Great snow, great weather, great scene 10/15/2004

There is a reason why the rich and famous have made Aspen/Snowmass their home. It is one the most beautiful places in CO. Summer and winter. Snowmass is the best of the four resorts. It has steeps, bowls, fast groomers, and awesome scenery. Snowmass lacks nightlife. Most people go to Aspen to party. Aspen Mtn (a.k.a. Ajax) is right downtown. Ajax is steep and mostly a skier's mountain. Boarders will find Snowmass perfect. I've boarded throughout CO all my life, and Snowmass is one of my favorite. Awesome natural terrain. People can be snobby. I had two fur coat wearing skiers refuse to ride the chairlift with me cuz I was on a snowboard. Hmm... you get the idea. Great town, even better skiing 1/5/2003

Having been to several different resorts including Breckenridge, Keystone, and Winter Park I must say Aspen easily takes top honors. The editorial review is incorrect in that Aspen does offer beginner terrain on its other mountains (Snowmass, Buttermilk). However, those desiring more challenging runs will find home at Ajax (Aspen Mountain) or Aspen Highlands. Both of these mountains feature great runs that are long and steep. The blacks at Ajax and the Highlands put those at other resorts to shame. In addition to the great skiing there is also great shopping and nightlife. The views are amazing and the town is picturesque. Aspen also has smaller lines (although still long!) due to its distance from Denver. Aspen/Snowmass is the most expensive resort I have been to, but if you have the money, there's no better place to spend it. Pros: great skiing, shopping/nightlife Cons: expense more

Lifestyles of the Rich and Intermediates 1/3/2003

This resort is nice if you want to Ski groomed runs and hob nob with stars. The terrain leaves much to be desired for the expert skier save a few bowls and shoots, but nowhere near enough to keep the adrenalin pumping all day. THE BEST 11/15/2002

Anyone who has written a bad review on Aspen is CRAZY. I went to Aspen and Vail last year and Aspen was the best skiing and the best nightlife out of any resort I have ever been to. The backcountry skiing was to die for and the restaurants/nightlife was INSANE. I highly recommend this trip...you will definitely go back. And PS - Highlands is the best kept secret out there - awesome skiing and no lines!!! Pros: Expert terrain, Bars, Atmosphere more

Aspen or Aspirin? 11/12/2002

Aspen is definitely as skiers mountain and like the town it's suited to the upper end of things. The blue runs are just an excuse to get to something a lot steeper and those who designed the trail map were colorblind when it comes to green runs. But that's what Butter Milk is for. If you're hard core and can't find something interesting at Aspen, you're either dead or you found it on Steeple Chase at Aspen Highland or the Hanging Valley Wall at Snowmass, which come curtsey of a single ticket. When you consider all 4 mountains there's tons of skiing to be had for anyones ability level. And oh that night life. Yes it all comes at a premium and some might find it all a bit tacky but this is Aspen isn't it? more

ASPEN? You mean the Highlands right? 11/12/2002

Ajax is okay. Not great. The skiing while I was there was very limited to only a few runs which got old fast. Aspen Highlands on the other hand has more challenging runs, fewer people and is a much more exciting place. You've got the wrong Mountain. At the same time the whole Aspen area is great for trying different terrains and types of skiing. more

This place was awful. If you want to play with your yuppy friends go and have a great time. If you are looking for great skiing and friendly people, go somewhere else. They do have some challenging terrain though they also have some extremely long lines during peak season. Sure if you want to spend your time shopping, go enjoy yourself, but if you plan on being to busy skiing on your vacation, Aspen isn't the place for you. more
