We went here on a Saturday with an 8pm reservation and had to wait over an hour until we were seated. The host was incredibly rude rather than apologetic. Once we were seated it t...

Trendy, decent food. 5/16/2007

If you like nice and quiet, this is not the place for you. It is loud. Several large groups of people. Even at 10 pm the place was packed on a Tuesday night. Lots of beautiful people. Nice views. The butterfish was great, but the lamb was a little too salty. The server said the flan was excellent, but it was nothing amazing. Food, tip, valet, total cost was just about $200 for two of us. more

Wonderful views 5/13/2007

Great place for a special occasion. I've been there twice and tried several of their dishes (all extremely delicious). A must try is the side order of fried rice--equipped with sweet potatoes and topped with guacamole. I went for a friend's bday, and they personalized the dessert we ordered with his name. Dining at Asia de Cuba is truly a culinary delight! more

The Best! 5/4/2007

I ate here twice and am completely satisfied. I went there with a party of 9 and we just let the waiter order for us. We did a family style dinner which practically served almost everything on the menu. It was nice to have a bit of everything. Every dish the waiter ordered was so yummy and delicious. The total bill was $1300 but well worth it. Pros: Beautiful View and Excellent Food Cons: Pricey more

My FAVE for years 4/23/2007

I can't say enough good things about this place.... the food is delicious, beautiful crowd. the martinis are so yummy AND stiff. I never had a bad experience in all the times I've been here. Asia De Cuba remains to be one of my favorite restaurants 3 yrs straight. From the first time experiencing this place, i was hooked! Recommended! (lychee martini and everything on the menu!) Pros: Expensive but worth it. Never tasted food like this before. more

Nice Easter Brunch 4/16/2007

This is the second time I've eaten here, the first time was a large group for dinner and that was okay. Brunch was great, I had the smoked salmon plate. We basically decided to eat our way through Easter, we didn't stop at brunch, we added shrimp tempura and tuna rolls, then ended with the mexican donuts and flan. ALL of our food was top notch, service was good, not great but good. I'll come back here again and again (when I can afford it). Pros: The food, the view, the ambiance Cons: how snooty can valet parking be? You'll find out here. more

One of the best restaurants in Los Angeles....amazing!!!! 4/11/2007

I have heard amazing things about Asia de Cuba and it lived up to every expectation and thensome. I took peoples recommendations and had the lychee martini and it was great and we also had the calamari salda, which I didnt think was that great, I loved that it had bananas and cashews, which added to the flavor of the calamari but there was too much lettuce to get any flavor from the salad. We then had the butterfish, that was amazing.......it melted in our mouth and is one of the best entrees I have had in awhile. We then opted for the chocolate cake dessert rather then the bay of pigs and I was not dissapointed, the chocolate cake was perfect. more

Great meal, but such expensive valet 4/1/2007

Fantastic meal (especially the short ribs and butterfish, both of which were incredible). Keep in mind the portions are quite large and meant to be shared, so it's easy to order too much food. The decor is beautiful and the outdoor patio (when there isn't loud throbbing music playing next to the pool) is gorgeous, with amazing views of LA. But good heavens...the valet (with validation) has gone up to $15!!! For an hour and a half meal. Parking in LA has always been ridiculous, but wow...this is why I moved out of here. Oh, and it's still really scene-y. Pros: butterfish, short ribs, crab cake Cons: valet more

Delicious But Watch Out for Valet Thieves 3/2/2007

Asia de Cuba is always delicious. I just wanted to warn everyone that the valet in front steals any and all money (and who knows what else) from all compartments in your car. Not cool. more

Great food and charming service 2/6/2007

Try the chicken there is to die for. Even if we have to wait 20 minutes for our table the service was charming. Original deco, they gave me ideas for my house and full of beautiful people.Reservation is required if you want to be sure to get a table there. We wanted more, more, more and more food, the chef is a magician and we were in Wonderfland. Highly recommended. Pros: food food food and service Cons: we have to leave more

Butterfish in wonderland! 1/9/2007

What a fantastic restaurant. My brother, his friends and I ate at Asia De Cuba and we both agreed that it was possibly the best meal we've eaten in a restaurant in West Hollywood.\r \r The menu is a fusion of Asian and Cuban cuisine beautifully put together. We started with a delicious calamari salad, special sushi roll and steamed beans dumplings. All were an amazing fusion of tastes and textures.\r Next came an exquisite butterfish, short ribs, cuban chicken and the lamb -all worthy of the utmost praise. \r For side dishes we opted to stay with the lobster mash and soy veggies.\r \r Just about having room for dessert my brother chose the dessert platter - given the tiny spoonful I was allowed to remove from the plate I have to assume that it more then met with his approval! The cuban opera was just impressive.\r \r The staff were courteous, knowledgable and attentive throughout our visit - a special credit to the managers Stephanie and Franki who are not only gracious hosts but might be 2 of the funniest people we've met.\r \r After dinner we went to the beautiful skybar. It was a bit pretentious and somehow empty so we did not understand why the door security refused entrance to other patrons. My brother had a point, you know when a place is going down when the most beautiful girl at the Mondrian hotel is the restaurant Manager.\r Highly recommend Asia De Cuba, You can pass on Skybar.\r more

Dinner Right out of a Dream 12/9/2006

I am excited to say that this is my very ""first"" restaurant review of the many thousands that are to come in my life. Asia De Cuba has been and is one of my favorite restaurants that I've ever eaten at! You can't get any more ""L.A."" than this place. I dined there with two friends of mine on Sunday, December 3rd, 2006 and we had quite a wonderful experience. We got the best table in the house, I call it the ""J. Lo"" table, because that's where I imagine J. Lo would sit if she ate there. The view was amazing overlooking the lights of L. A. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, everything is crisp and clean with a white and beige interior. I've always been greeted by a great maitre de and host. Although I was sad to hear that my favorite maitre de, Craig, no longer worked there, I still had a wonderful experience. We were escorted to our table, surrounded by huge trees in oversized flowerpots, yup we're in a dream alright. We were then greeted by our server. I have only one thing to complain about this place, and it's the server's attitudes. And this has always been my experience here, is that they have this nonchalant attitude of not caring. I guess it comes with the territory and some of the clientele. But when the bussers and the host staff are so friendly and the servers aren't, things just become a little inconsistent. But we slowly won our server over, and he warmed up to us and realized we weren't nearly half the shallow people he's probably waited on in the past. I think once we got there, it was smooth sailing. Let's cut to the chase and talk about the food and drinks. All I got to say is that their lychee martini is as good as the ones I've had at Cafeteria in Manhattan. We started with their famous Calamari Salad, and it was as yummy as I remembered it. We then shared 3 entrees, all of them delicious. My favorite being the butterfish. It simply melted in your mouth. The fusion of latin and asian influences were amazing. Asia De Cuba is tasty chic! Pros: Delicious & Unique food, Nice staff, Beautiful at night, an L.A. experience! Cons: Nonchalant servers ( You guys make bank, put on a smile) more

WANNABEE, LOW RENT, NO LONGER WORTH IT 11/10/2006

I live in the area - unfortunately, the old reputation of this once cool place attracted some clients to want a reservation there, but I'll definitely turn us to other restaurants in the future. The girl at the front was full of attitude, unable to give us a table anywhere near what we'd asked for, which is fine, but she was pretty nasty and dismissive about it. Then the servers served the food like they were at a diner - one server actually served the crispy fish so abruptly that the entree tipped over and sloshed across the plate (nice presentation for a $40 entree). After the meal, we wanted to have a drink at Skybar, but of course were told that the restaurant and the bar were separate, but Kevin the rope guy was aggressively rude about it in front of our guests. I think to sum it up, the staff has forgotten that the guests are spending on one experience what easily equals their take-home salary. They're jaded and callous in their approach, in a city that now has many other options that are far more in mode and interesting at present. All in all, I'll pass on any future experiences at the Mondrian, and am forwarding this e-mail to my friends at the Washington Post, the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. I'm sure the owners of the venues won't care, but at least I'll be able to steer others from a similar experience. \r Pros: FOOD DECENT Cons: SERVICE SLOPPY, FRONT DESK CALLOUS, FAR TOO MUCH ATTITUDE FOR SUCH A HAS-BEEN VENUE more

Beautiful patio, beautiful people 11/7/2006

It was my birthday and several friends wanted to take me somewhere special. We arrived promptly for our 8:30 reservation. Since is was a Tuesday night, we assumed we would have not problem getting a good table, no so at first. The hostess said that she could only seat us in the back of the patio with no view. After walking around I noticed several choice tables and inquired. ""Oh they are already spoken for"". My friend piped up and said that it was a special occasion and could they make an effort. In the end they gave us a great table. Service was excellent, the food although good wasn't great as had been written in previous reviews, calamari salad was on the bland side, too much dressing, short ribs were tender, but dry, the whole fish was really overcooked and had littlte to no sauce. The duck was the best but by the time they brought it we were were full - big portions. The desert was beautiful and delicious but $16 for a small piece of chocolate cake it should be. All in all it is a beautiful place to dine and enjoy the good life or that special occasion. Pros: Beautiful environment, special treatment Cons: very pricey food that could be better more

Delicious food and friendly service, gorgeous view! 11/4/2006

This place is consistenly one of my favorites in LA. The food is always amazing and the service couldn't be any more friendly. The view from the patio is the best in LA. Great place to take friends for a special occasion or family from out of town. Pros: great view, yummy food, friendly service Cons: kind of pricey more

Great People Watching 11/2/2006

I have eaten at this restaurant a few times, and I get most of my pleasure from the service that's provided there. The food is average, there are a few items that are above average, but it's ok. They do have a pretty tasty breakfast....The valet is crazy priced, but they can afford to do so because parking is a nightmare on Sunset. Pros: Service, People Watching Cons: Average food more

The Best Fusion in town 11/1/2006

The last time I picked a restaurant for my friends to have her dinner, everyone was mad at me but now I have redeemed myself, once I chose Asia de Cuba. The lighting was dim so we could barely see the menu but what ever we ate it was so good, my mouth is watering just thinking of it. This restaurant is now one of my favorites. Be sure to dress L.A chic or prepare to fell out of place. My recommendations is butter fish, calamari salad, pesto shrimp and chicken on lemon grass. more

Asian Fusion 10/29/2006

This place is great for parties! It's right next to the Sky Bar, but don't think you can get in just because you ate @ Asia de Cuba. If you want to get into the bar, get a room there for the night. The restaurant has some of the best service and a fabulous lychee martini! The Key Lime martinis are great too! The food comes in family sized portions to be shared so it's definitely great to go with a few friends! The tuna tartare appetizer is good. The steak was great but the butterfish is definitely better! Try the sticky rice side if you want a touch of authenticity (Thais eat this all the time). The waiters/servers are dressed in lounge-like wear (the type of attire you see in SE Asia when you go to get a massage) and the place has a very surreal feel to it! Definitely a place to eat, drink and be merry! Pros: Great View, Relaxing Ambience Cons: pricey more

Yummy Butterfish! 9/13/2006

Romantic date spot. Make reservations and ask for table on the patio with a view.\r You'll be more likely to get a good table if you get there earlier.\r We ordered: Tuna Tartare (too salty for my taste, wouldn't recommend), Asia de cuba salad (the one with bananas, highly recommended); Butterfish (contrary to the name, no butter added, healthy and YUMMY! GET THIS); lobster mashed potatoes (interesting, yummy, not spectacular, would try once); Dessert: Banana Split (get this too, very yum).\r Overall, good service, great food (very large portions, which is why we ordered 2 appetizers and one entree), great ambience. Price: With the food and a bottle of wine, about $200 for two. Pros: yummy food Cons: valet fee $12 more

Great place for a Romantic Dinner...Short Ribs to Die for! 9/7/2006

My husband and I celebrated our 1st Wedding Anniversary here and could not have picked a more romantic place. We were seated as soon as we arrived even though we were running a bit late for an early dinner reservation (called to let them know). The food was delicious and well worth the price $$$$...short ribs were to die for...no bone to deal with, very tender with a combination of cuban/asian spices...yum! Don't pass on the dessert...we shared this wonderful banana cake concoction (forgot the name) that was towering in size and enough to feed 4 people! When they say 'family style' they mean it! Definitely need a doggy-bag to go. Pros: Romantic, Great city views. Cons: $12 valet parking...ouch! more

This is Pure LA at its best! 8/7/2006

Ok... for those of us who live in LA and go out..well all the time... We found ourselves in this timeless spot where the service and food is consistently fantastic. \r Ok Part 2. For all of your out of towners. This truly is a LALA Land Experience. Gorgeous, Eclectic Crowd, Home of the 3 inch skirts, and 4 inch heels on most of the model/actress patrons.... their dates in ripped jeans and sports coats.. all very chichi and glam. The waitstaff is perfection, the food is delectable and designed to be shared. Sit outside and you will feel like you are in the Garden or Eden before the fall.. only with modern Stark touches.... Everyone is quite friendly... even us celebs... we are all in the same space enjoying this perfect gem on the Strip. Dress the part and make a reservation.. and be prepared to have a truly fantastic time. Pros: This is Pure LALA Land. Fabulous people, space, views Cons: Noisy Inside at Peak Hours more

  • The restaurant at the uber-sleek Mondrian hotel is a white-on-white fantasia packed with expense accounters, hotel guests and pretty people on dates. Philippe Starck cuckoo clocks line the stark walls, while hundreds of tiny lights create a warm, romantic glow. The patio, with its surreal giant clay pots, ficus trees and panoramic views, is one of the loveliest dining spaces in town. Caribbean-Latino-Asian dishes are served family-style. Crab croquettas are a lighter spin on crab cakes, giant Asian pesto grilled shrimp with wok-charred coconut-pineapple is flavorful and the pan-seared ahi is a favorite with its mashed potatos topped with crunchy wasabi peas. Desserts are elaborate architectural concoctions that don't sacrifice flavor for height: The Bay of Pigs banana split is a humongous tower of chocolate, coconut, ice cream and yes, more than a few calories.
