Ate at Asanebo last night and had a fantastic meal! We sat at the bar and asked the sushi chef to give us the best choices for what was in season and we were not disappointed. S...

Worst

Having been to most of the Japanese restaurants in the area and in SoCal, I was very disappointed with the meal. We were a party of 4 and spent $400 on dinner and were all hungr...

there is much better sushi out there 11/26/2005

they seem to have had a great review and then let it slide or something... we tried it twice, and the sushi was dry, the atmosphere so so... if you want non sushi then you might like it. I suggest going to Sushi Nozawa or Sushi Dan ... better bang for your money and tummy. :) Pros: non sushi looks OK Cons: bad parking, dry sushi, not great service more

Hugely disappointing 10/17/2005

I was looking for a decent Japanese restaurant in the area when I came across this 'little gem' as other reviewers have called Asanebo. From the miniscule portion size to the unbelievably oily grilled dishes it was a disappointment all around. All I could think of as the waiter brought out each dish one by one was where we could go afterwards to finish our dinner. On a positive note the staff was friendly and service punctual. Pros: service Cons: food more

The best place for sushi! 4/21/2005

I've had plenty of sushi in Los Angeles but Asanebo is the best. My boyfriend and I were so surprised at the knowledgeable, kind and attentive wait staff. The sushi is out of this world, and trust me if they recommend a daily special get it. We tried mostly everything on the board and we couldn't believe how great everything tasted. It's a little pricey but worth it Pros: Sushi, Wait staff, Daily Specials Cons: Price more

Sticker Shock Without The Sticker 1/29/2005

On the menu, it seemed Asanebo's prices were in line with most sushi places: around $6-$9 per order. We failed to realize that prices on specials are way OUT of line -- averaging $30-$40 per plate. We were suckerpunched by the oldest restaurant trick in the book -- unmarked prices on daily specials. I would warn others to ask about prices before ordering, but then again, Asanebo is the kind of place where if you have to ask, you can't afford it. That being said, the food was exquisite. I'm still dreaming about that Halibut, but still fuming about the prices. They must know their prices are an outrage, or they wouldn't be hiding them from view. We got chumped. But if you're not a person of modest means like I am, by all means, go there and blow your probably-not-so-hard-earned dough. This place is yummy. Painful, but yummy. Pros: Delicious Cons: Expensive more

Delicious Fish! 8/5/2004

The fish here is so fresh it tastes so sweet and delicious! I absolutely love this restaurant, from the delicate sashimi and sushi, to the wonderful items on the hot menu, to the beyond excellent service. This place is a real gem! The sushi chefs are so skilled and yet so friendly even though the place is usually packed. Try the soft shell crab when it's in season, it is heavenly! The spanish mackrel and the toro are insanely tasty too. I love Asanebo! Pros: Freshest Fish, Excellent service Cons: , Mini mall parking more

Great Sushi! 3/9/2004

Went here with a friend on a Friday night. No wait, got a table right away. The item that stands out most is the fatty tuna, really delicious and well prepared. Great service too! Check it out! Pros: great food, nice & fast service, variety of items more

The Very Best 10/14/2003

Every dish that comes out of either the kitchen or the sushi bar is a work of art which will make you question what exactly you have been eating all these years. The sashimi specials are a perfect way to start a long meal that is more about discovering new flavors than it is about filling up on assembly line sushi (case in point: the ethereal uni tempura, unlike anything I have ever had). The service is sublime from the sushi chefs on down to the friendly and helpful busboy. While Asanebo is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, it is well worth the expense without having to suffer through the attitude or pretension of some other high-priced sushi joints. more

BEST SUSHI 7/27/2003

Best Sushi. Much of it is just as good as Matsuhisha, if not better. People who don't like this place simply don't know good sushi. Their totr, on one night, however, was chewy, not buttery. A dissipointment, but the only one in the many times I have been there. heir constant influx of new sushi is always a delight. I suspect the only reason they aren't as popular as the nasty place down the street called Nozawa is because they are so nice and accomodating. Desserts are alos delicious, if not as inventive as the rest of the menu. Pros: food, food, food Cons: price more

The Best Japanese 12/4/2002

This is the best Japanese in all of Los Angeles, or at least of all those that we've been to, and that's a lot. Every time someone says ""we've got to try"" a certain Japanese restaurant, we come away saying ""that was good, but not as good as Asanebo."" Originally, it was a sashimi bar and restaurant with no sushi, but after a few years of people walking out when they find out its not a sushi bar, they now have sushi as well as sashimi. But don't miss their other dishes, including seared tuna (much better than any other I've had at other restaurants), sauteed mushrooms and asparagus, baby abalone, etc. Wonderful! more
