Terrible service was shocking 11/7/2007

Going away on business alone is difficult when you don't know your bearings and I traditionally go to the hotel restaurant for my first few meals. When I went for breakfast on day 1, I was told I could sit, but that it would be10 to15 minutes before a server would be able to serve me -- what?! The restaurant was less than 1/8 full. I've never been told that at a restaurant. When I came back for lunch I was told the exact same thing, but there were even less people in the restaurant! I decided to stick it out and did have to wait 10 minutes to be served. The server I did have was fine. The food was good, but not worth the wait or the confusing, shocking welcome. more

Great Food - impeccable Service 4/25/2007

When I first arrived, it was difficult to find the restaurant as there was no signage. We arrived at the restaurant early and decided to have drinks in the bar. The bartender was terrific! I got to try Reislings by the glass that are very rarely available. What a treat! Pros: Food, Wine list, Service - Great private dining room that seats up to 40 Cons: Tough to find more

Lobster Corndogs, Yum! Crabcakes and Fresh Seafood Delicous 9/21/2006

Bar is intimate and service is smashing! Location is superb (San Carlos and Market). Bartender (girl) remembers my drink and I frequent once per month. Who knew what Downtown San Jose could offer in service! Impressed with the super effiicient service at a subtle level. more

Big Disappointment 4/2/2006

I had lunch with a friend at the restaurant. The table was not setup properly. A fork and a napkin is missing. I ordered the Ahi Tuna tartare as appetizer. I almost finished with the appetizer, then the waiter brought me the toast that's suppose to serve with the Ahi. After we finished the appetizers, the waiter (a different waiter) took the dishes away, including the bread and the butter (please, the entree hadn't come yet). For a moment, I thought I was done with my lunch. After we finished our entree and they cleaned the table, we sat there for almost 25 mins and nobody came and asked whether we need any coffee or dessert. Definitely, the restaurant does not live up to its reputation. more

A good alternative to the city 3/23/2006

It was a stormy week and needed to host a special occasion dinner, rather than drive to SF fighting traffic, parking, and bad weather, we decided it was the perfect reason to venture south to sample yet another Michael Mina spot. There were few dinner-goers mostly conventioneers at the restaurant's bar which is the ONLY bar inside the Marriott (loud, noisy, and a bit obnoxious). Foodwise, however, we were not disappointed. The food was well-prepared, lots of signature dishes from his amazing repertoire...although the service is not quite polished and the hostess a bit on the aloof side, the restaurant's cusine, portions, & prices go back to the early days of Chef Mina minus the fact that the feel of the place is very ""hotel"". If you don't want to drive to SF, you can definitely have the experience at Arcadia, for the most part. Pros: Food, Good Parking Cons: Nosiy Bar-goers, Few patrons more

I'll never return there. 2/15/2006

Sat down at a table that wasn't completely set, glasses were dirty, old utensils on the floor at my wifes feet. Ordered tea and got a pot of tea with no cup. After asking 3 times for a cup, it finally came but the tea was cold. We tried ordered some soda to go with our meal instead. It didn't arrive until AFTER we had finished our meal. Not once was our water glass refilled. Menu called for baby carrots in a salad. Got a salad with whole carrots (not a big deal) but cut in large chunks, partially peeled and with the but ends still there. UGH. The sandwich looked like it was sitting under heat lamps for an extended period. Our neighbors had similar difficulty with their waiter. The manager being accosted at the front door by another patron tells me this is a pervasive problem. Pros: Location Cons: Expensive, Bad Service, Sub Par food. more

Great Food and Desserts to Die For! 2/1/2006

I had the evening's tasting menu and if you plan on doing the same, skip the toasty dinner bread rolls that come out with sea salt, anchovy, and sun dried tomato butters. The French onion soup was sweet and silky, and the tableside prepped Ahi Tuna Tartare was delightfully fresh. The Steak Rossini (filet mignon and seared foie gras) was so rich and super tender, that I could've mistaken it for Kobe! I regret not finishing my filet mignon because it was so delicious! Me and my party shared a dessert tray consisting of root beer float, creme brulee, biscotti, chocolate cookies, chocolate ganache mousse cake, and orange pound cake...we were in heaven! No matter how stuffed we were, we couldn't resist the luxurious rootbeer float. Service, ambience, and food were great! Thanks to Chef Michael Mina, downtown San Jose has a niche for fine diners at ARCADIA. Pros: Food, Service more

The service at Denny's was superior to Arcadia 1/28/2006

Although the restuarant was only 1/3 occupied, and many servers were standing around, the service was horrible. It was a half hour after we were seaed before a server showed up for our dinner order (no drink orders taken prior). We ordered drinks and it was another 30 minutes before drinks arrived (an hour after being seated). That was pretty much the better part. The quality of the food was high, although many of the dishes did arrive cold. We spoke to the GM after we paid the bill to inform him of the terible service and his only comment was ""I agree with you"". Pros: food Cons: the service, the service, the service more

Falls short of Best of 9.6 rating 6/20/2005

This place was a disappointment. There was no hostess at the greeting table. Someone finally appeared 10 minutes later. 10 more minutes passed before our waiter appeared. My drink order arrived 20 minutes later. The noise level was uncomfortable. I could hear intimate details from a table 10 feet away. Our waiter was nice, but seemed rushed and not interested in us. When our food arrived, the portions were surprisingly small considering the price and the flavors were bland. The ""medium-rare"" steak was overcooked. When asked how the food was, we told our waiter not very good. He apologized and said he'd let the chef know. I expected a discount or complimentary dessert offering, but we were offered nothing. I'm highly disappointed with this dining experience. I expected better with a ""Best of 9.6"" rating. I will not be going here again, much less recommending it to people I know. Pros: location, decoration Cons: pricey, noisy, so-so service more

One of My Favorites 2/3/2005

I love Arcadia! Excellent food! Offerings include American classics with an upscale twist (i.e. Maine Lobster Pot Pie, Kobe beef ""Chicken"" Fried Steak). Everything was delicious. The restaurant looks much better in the evenings than its pictures indicate. This restaurant has an intimate feel. For a romantic dinner, request a table by the back window. Service was good, but a little rough around the edges. I'm sure it will improve with time. Pros: Great food, Great ambiance Cons: Service a bit spotty more

Great grub in a hotel? 1/10/2005

Well, I too was skeptical. But this is not just any hotel restaurant. Give it a try. You will not be disappointed. Try the Kobe beef in ANY form! Pros: awesome food, friendly service, ambience more

LET DOWN 6/27/2004

I was so excited to go try Arcadia, we got seated w/out reservations on a Friday evening. Not even half the tables were occupied. I ordered the Arcadia salad, which was drowning in blue cheese, and the server came back 10 minutes later to ask if I wanted pepper. I then ordered the Chicken ravioli appetizer, the flavor was very over powering. My dinner date ordered the Meat and Potatoes, although the meat was excellent the potato trio was very small and the price Big! I was really dissapointed and will probably not recommend or return more

$19 lunch that let's you try a bunch 8/29/2003

Downtown SJ was a trek, but I was curious about Michael Mina's new place. I wasn't disappointed and highly recommend Arcadia. The service was professional and quick. When I found a hair in my dessert, they comped the dessert. Arcadia offers a $19 ""express lunch""--a great value. The lunch consists of a salad you create yourself (choose up to 10 ingredients from a list of ~30), 2 small cups of soup (corn chowder and tomato in my case), and 4 small sandwiches ~2.5 times the size of a finger sandwich (roast beef w/foie gras, lobster salad, lox, BBQ chicken). I was worried that the lunch would be too small because everything was referred to as ""bites"", but there was plenty of food. You can also get a dessert sampler for an additional $7. I was given smores, root beer float, 2 cookies, and peaches w/cream. Again, plenty to eat. more

Trendy American in San Jose 7/27/2003

Arcadia is a great addition to downtown San Jose. It is modern and hip with a good mix of people . A great place to just sit at the bar for cocktails and people watch or to have a nice dinner, alone at the counter, or at a table by the windows. The food is attractively presented. Truffle Popcorn could use less salt and more truffle oil. Try the Lobster hotdogs. Their broccoli soup was great and Chicken Fried Steak was delicious and modern. Our server, David, is great. Pros: Decor, Food Cons: Parking more
