WORST NEW YEARS DINNER EVER! 1/1/2008

We went as a party of four to AOC to celebrate New Years Eve this year 2007/08, as we have in the past years. This year we went with two vegetarians. I called 3 times to note that we had two vegetarians in our group. It didn't seem to be a problem. ""We have many vegetarians & vegans coming..."" said the hostess on my 2nd call. So cut to the night of... At $125 per person (for the 9:45 seating) the vegetarian options turned out to actually be the EXACT SAME pre-fixed options on the standard menu, MINUS the meats & fish. So a Scallop dish on a bed of potatoes and salad was served AS a bed of potatoes and salad. The short-ribs on a bed of lettuce, was served AS a BED OF LETTUCE! Cons: EVERYTHING! more

OVERALL SATISFIED 11/22/2007

I HAD MADE A PREVIOUS RESERVATION AT AOC FOR MY BOSS, SO I DECIDED TO CHECK IT OUT FOR MY BDAY. FINDING IT WASN'T HARD. I FELT A SNOOTY VIBE WHEN I WALKED IN WITH THE PATRONS STARING AT US, BUT THE HOSTESS SEEMED NICE ENOUGH. THE AMBIANCE WAS SIMILIAR TO A HUGE, DIM LIVING ROOM. YOU GET BREAD AND A SORT OF TAPENADE WHICH IS INTERESTING WITHOUT BEING SAVORY AND THEIR WHOLE OLIVES ARE AMAZING. WE ORDERED THE CHEESE PLATTER AND HAD THE SERVER PICK OUT THE CHEESE FOR US. IT TASTED GREAT. WE TRIED THE PORK RILLETES (EH), PROSCUITTO (GREAT), SOME KIND OF FISH WITH APRICOT PISTACHIO YOGURT (INTERESTING) AMONG OTHER THINGS. THE COST OF DINING WAS WHAT I EXPECTED, ABOUT $50/PERSON FOR THE TAPAS AND COUPLE GLASSES OF WINE. I'M NOT SURE I'D MAKE AN EFFORT TO GO BACK BUT WOULDN'T MIND IF I FOUND MYSELF THERE AGAIN. Pros: GREAT RECOMMENDATION AND SERVICE FROM WAIT STAFF, CHEESE & WINE SELECTION Cons: STUCK UP PATRONS more

Best tapas ever! 10/26/2007

My boyfriend introduced me to the bacon wrapped figs, and they are amazing! The shrimp and corn salad, and the cauliflower are almost as good, but you have have have to order the figs! more

Tasteful, enjoyable ambience; the least-healthy food in Los Angeles (except for Pink's) 10/19/2007

Bacon-wrapped dates, fried oysters, ubiquitous prosciutto, fancified egg sandwiches, sextuple-cream cheeses--there is much for a health-conscious person to avoid on this menu. I suggest going nearby to Joan's on Third or The Little Door if you want to live to celebrate your fiftieth birthday. True, the wine list is fabulous--but man (no, let us say, ""people"") do not live by booze and fat alone. And--happily--there are a few over-priced mushroom and salad concoctions to ensure that you will not pass out from hunger if your goal is to eat healthy and your trendy friends require you to join them here. Pros: Nice place to hang out Cons: Food that clogs your arteries more

Excellent Selection of Wines, Cheeses, Meats - backdropped by outstanding service 9/30/2007

Everyone who works here impressed me - from the guy behind the extensive wine bar who offered advice on a number of varietals, to our server who described each of the many dishes in great detail, to our busser who was so on top of his game I would call him the best busser in LA county. Even the host pitched in to check on our table. Pros: Great Food, Great Wine Selection, Outstanding Service, Nice Ambiance Cons: Maybe a little pricey, but that's to be expected. more

Bad food and bad service 9/13/2007

Oh my god why did i even go here in the first place. For starting the food is horrible and i mean horrible, second clueless service from the waiters here.Service here is sketchy, they dont inform you how long the food will take or suggest you any good things to order.Price for me is not an issue but service has to be top notch.Wine list is ok and i mean ok,all the raves for nothing.Sommelier here must be clueless or if they have any. Most of the wines i have had several times from my own wine cellar which is ten times better than this restaurants wine list.I am not a big fan of flights,i believe in glasses, bottles.Too make the long story short we wont be back until they change their service standards and wine list and improve the food.Tapa's is a joke here.Save your money go to providence instead. Pros: ? Cons: So many more

Great food, helpful service, watch on how much to order 8/21/2007

I really loved this place. I didn't encounter the pretense that some other reviewers did, the hostess and our server were very friendly, as were the busboys who consistently refilled our bread. The server was especially helpful as we were choosing our cheese, since I am not very familiar with the specific types, he made some great recommendations and was VERY knowledgable about the tastes and textures of the different options. We also had the accompaniments with the cheese (different types of nuts, raisins, etc.), bacon wrapped dates, burrata/haricot verts salad, pistachio halibut, and the proscuitto/egg/gruyere sandwich. Everything was really good, especially the bacon wrapped dates and the proscuitto sandwich, though my boyfriend thought the halibut had too strong of a taste. One caution I would give is that the servers recommend each person in the party order three plates. I personally think it is WAY too much food. There were two of us, we ordered essentailly two dishes each and had a lot left over. Other tables had food left over as well. Pros: Service, food, great wine list for all price points Cons: Too much food recommended more

Give the waiters some Prozac 8/15/2007

4th time visitor writing. The meals and the wine selection have always been great, wheras most of the waiters seem to be rather demotivated, arrogant and with that I-couldn'-t-care-less attitude. That's especially the case when none of the owners is around, so you'd better visit A.O.C. in the 2nd half of the week. The waiter we had on our last visit interrupted our friend in the middle of the sentence while he was placing his order and said: ""I don't know if you understood the concept of this restaurant."" If she thought he didn't, why wouldn't she explain it to him? Was she possibly put off because she noticed we came from Europe and afraid she would not get tipped? Talking about tips: the later it got, the friendlier she turned--and when she brought the bill to our table, she finally flashed her first smile. An ultra-friendly, and we all agreed, an extremely fake smile. Not quite sure if we'll give this place another chance. Pros: food Cons: (lacking) friendliness of some of the waiters more

A little pricey for what you get, but still good 6/28/2007

I'm sorry to read about other people's bad experiences at AOC. While I'm sure all they've reported has happened (c'mon... it's a trendy LA restaurant so it shouldn't be surprising)... I've been there twice and have had a great experience each time. The service has always been friendly and efficient. I enjoy the ""small plates"" experience at this and other restaurants, but I have to say I've had better than AOC. It's delicious and definitely worth a try, but I think it's a little too pricey for what you get. They could up the portions just a tad. However, definitely try the cheese list... very tasty and your server should be able to recommend a good wine to go along with what you're eating. Pros: Large selection, great cheese menu, wonderful wine selection Cons: Although it's ""small plates"", portions could be a little bigger more

Arrogant Obnoxious Characters (AOC) 6/25/2007

First, we were told to leave after our 'alloted time slot' was up. We hadn't even finished dinner or even seen the dessert menu. The server was not even slightly apologetic nor did she give a damn... but I think she was just too Arrogant to. The manager was absolutely Obnoxious and instructed me to not be rude by interrupting him while he was on his rant of why he needed the table. FYI, the 'patio' was half empty. Speaking of which, the AOCs call the upstairs attic the 'patio'! In other words, he did not care if we were unhappy nor if we were ever to return. So, if you're not a 'somebody', don't expect any kind of service. Albeit, after a $250 bill for two, the greasy and heavy food along with the AOC left us sick to our stomachs for days! Cons: Everything more

wonderful learning experience, exceptional service 5/29/2007

My family went into AOC recently and were bowled over by the experience. We felt a bit lost when reading the menu all those exotic cheeses, wines, meats. Our server relieved us by offering help and went through the menu with us even though it was apparent the restaurant was filling up. She was calm and patient. We loved everything we ate...lamb cheeks! lamb meatballs! foie gras! stood out as did the salmon and choc tart. The sommeiler helped us match wines so we ended up tasting 3 different wines that paired lovely with the food. We felt special, like VIP's , especially when the server informed us that the woman helping us with our wine choices was also part owner. We left feeling excited about what we learned and satiated by what we consumed. Thank you Caroline and Julie for going the extra distance to insure our night was a success. We definitely will be back! Pros: informative smart service without any attitude more

Unusual, and unusually delicious 5/18/2007

I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews of this restaurant. I have been there numerous times, usually on special occasions, and have never received anything but friendly and attentive service. I have to wonder if people receiving rude service aren't arriving with a chip on their shoulder for some reason. Our plates consistently arrive perfectly timed, with new ones arriving just as we finish the old ones. The menu is always interesting and many times I order things I would normally not think of having (such as rabbit), only to be pleasantly surprised. I always arrive hungry and leave sated. The waitstaff is well-versed in the wine list and I always enjoy their suggestions. We have been there for their prix fixe menus on New Year's and Valentine's Day, which are superb. It's definitely not on the cheap side so save your visit for an occasion where you're willing to pay extra for a special dinner. Try to get a table upstairs if you want a quieter, more romantic or intimate feel, or sit downstairs if you want to people-watch. Don't expect a night out at Sizzler and you will enjoy yourself immensely. And for pete's sake do NOT forget to order the bacon-wrapped dates. Pros: Unusual and delicious small plates, top-notch service, great wine list Cons: On the noisy side, especially downstairs; usually very crowded; expect to wait for your table even with a reservation more
