Best

Ate there last night with a group of old friends. Haven't been to L.A. for awhile and it was nice to be back in the city. Loved the small plate concept, had a few things I'd only ...

Nice looking room, cooly sophisticated but overall I left feeling kind of ... eh.. about the whole thing. Food was much ado about not much. Wine list was good, but not the holy g...

I have always enjoyed this place. I especially enjoy sitting and eatting at the wine bar. The service is great there. I normally don't like eatting at the bar in most restaurants, but for A.O.C. I make an exception. If you are on a date it is not the most romantic spot in the resuarant. I would suggest making a reservation because the wait can be long. The wait is worth it because the food and the wine are great. Pros: food , wine Cons: long wait more

Gone Downhill 11/15/2005

Once eating at AOC was a stellar experience, but recently its been sliding. All the food used to be impeccable. The tomato salad is still perfect, and the black cod is one of the best plates in the whole city. Lately, however weve had some lackluster dishes. The biggest change was the service. Perhaps our server had just come from a rough audition, but we received some ridiculously uppity attitude. Never before have I had a server actually turn and walk off while I was midst of placing an order. Let alone at a $300 meal. Want some insight about what items on the menu your server would recommend? Sorry, 'Everything here is good'. Curious about how big a portion is? Get ready to hear the stock speech about 'Small Plates' over and over again. AOC may become a haunt for chowhounds, not folks looking to have a beautiful meal. Pros: Food can be superb, Central location., Diverse menu. Cons: Bitchy Service, Some mediocre plates more

Top 3 Restaurant in L.A. 11/9/2005

I love this restaurant. The food is fantastic, I've never been disappointed here. We were seated right away, which is really wonderful. Our server was really nice, no attitude at all. I would put this restaurant as one of the top 3 restaurants in L.A. Highly recommended. Pros: Great food, Great Wine, Great Service more

best food in la. period. 10/9/2005

all right, so i may be exaggerating a bit, but really, aoc does take the cake in terms of the best food in los angeles. get the pork cheeks, arroz negro with squid, and any of the fishes. service is excellent and wine list is amazing. be sure to make reservations much in advance, as they fill up quick. tonight was nice, as i was able to get a table for dinner in the afternoon. then again, it was a monday. Pros: heavenly food, ambience, service Cons: none! more

delicious 8/18/2005

I've eaten at A.O.C. several times and it has never been less than amazing. The food is creative and delicious. The bacon-wrapped dates are a must. Because the dishes are small and meant to be shared, you get to try many different dishes, so it's especially fun to go with a larger group. My experience with the service has always been positive: on-time seating for reservations, friendly, attentive, no-attitude, and knowledgeable about the food. more

So not worth it! 8/11/2005

The attitude in that place is ridiculous. From trying to make a reservation, where they rattle off a laundry list of their rules which includes the fact that they do not guarantee that they will honor any specific requests for seating, to the attitude we got when we were seated on their tiny ""outdoor patio,"" some waiter or manager came out to say to us ""I'm gonna nip it in the bud before you even ask, YOU CANNOT SMOKE OUT HERE!"" Then, they rushed us through dinner, bringing everything all at once, and hovering above us until we left. The food was good, but not worth the $170 we spent. There are much better tapas places or restaurants for that matter in LA, that don't have the attitude! Pros: food is good Cons: Attitude, not worth the price more

Very bad experience 8/10/2005

BAD BAD BAD service. The manager is rude. Treated my friends and my wife as if we don't belong at this place. I have been to much trendier restaurants than this one and have been treated like I am a human being at least. They brought everything at once and the waitress stood over us while we ate. They call their dishes Tapas but it's basically Californian cuisine in small plates. Very expensive. The chef should go to Spain and have real Tapas. Don't be fooled by the hype. Much better places in LA than this one. A.O.C stands for Arrogant Overpriced Cantina. Pros: very LA, valet, open late Cons: bad service, expensive, non smoking patio more

Just so-so 8/7/2005

Really friendly service, from the valet to the front desk to the server, but food just wasn't anything special. Dinner for two was just under $200 with tip, and neither of us are raring to go back. Didn't like the 4oz glass wine pours...stick to the bottles. Nice room. Pros: Service, Wine List Cons: Food, Desserts, Value more

UNBELIEVABLE!!! 8/1/2005

This place is the only foodie mecca in LA. The menu is fantastic, the restaurant is sexy, and the experience is simply devine. Everyone who can, should dine here. Pros: unique menu, great wine, sexy Cons: very expensive more

awesome food, love this place! 8/1/2005

We were late for 1/2 hrs but were seated right away. The dishes that we tried were all good esp pork cheek, halibut and squid with black rice. The mushrooms were so so. We ordered 6 dishes for 2 of us and too stuffed at the end that we couldn't try the deserts! The waitress was attentive and helpful with our menu selection. The only thing is the tables are too close together. There's not much privacy. Pros: good food, good service, reasonable price Cons: crowded more

One of L.A.'s Best! 6/24/2005

If you enjoy small plates that excite you with the texture and taste of the morsels they hold, this is the place to go! My wife and I discovered it when we moved within a few blocks of A.O.C. My favorite dish were the dates stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon. The lamb chops were ultra-delicious as well. The only negative is that you NEED to have reservations. It is seriously overflowing with diners every night of the week, even on Tuesdays. I also enjoy the fact that you can order half bottles of wine, so that you can even have more variety throughout the night. Prices are high, but well worth every penny. Grab your favorite couple and get ready for a night of fun over some amazing wine and even better tapas! Pros: Flavor, Service, Wine Cons: Need reservation more

Fantastic 6/11/2005

After 6 weeks in LA we still had not found a true Manhattan or Napa quality restaurant, until AOC. Lots of perfectly done dishes with an emphasis on fish which was much welcomed. Hard to get in but worth the wait. Excellent wines with many caraffe options as others have said. Pros: super high quality, excellent service Cons: expensive, crowded more

Pretty much perfection 5/28/2005

Far and away the finest restaurant I have tried in LA. Although the menu changes slightly each time I go, I am never disappointed. Each plate is crafted with care, and the meats and chesses are always of the finest quality. The wine list is accessible, and the half carafes and flights make it possible to find the right match for each of your dishes. The speed of the coursing has always been appropriate, and the service is attentive without being intrusive. Always a pleasure. Pros: Food, Quality, Value Cons: crowded, noisy more

Great addition to LA 5/6/2005

Overall, I liked this place. The proscuitto plate and bacon wrapped dates were excellent. The cheese course was a little overpriced. The wines by the glass selection is reason enough to go. From a food perspective, I thought with the smaller plates it seemed as though the flavor complexity was lost. Good for a big group, more food to share. Pros: Variety Cons: Simple Flavors more

Worth fighting for a reservation 4/9/2005

It took me a number of tries to get a reservation here on a night we wanted to go -- the place is that popular, and deservedly so -- but we just came back from a Sunday-night dinner and were very happy with AOC. The service, food and wine were excellent, and our waiter went above and beyond; he was obviously someone who enjoys good food and wanted us to, too. A fine place. more

Brilliant wines, food and service! 2/10/2005

The food and the wines were superb....all with the guide of our very helpful waitress. Tables are close (we were upstairs, inside) but we could still hear each other and enjoy a synphomy of flavors in our mouths! Pros: knock out food, yummy wines, excellent service more

Excellent food and service! 11/21/2004

My husband and I had a great experience here. We arrived early and were seated right away. We asked to be moved upstairs and were accomodated - it was a bit quieter and the atmosphere was nicer on the patio. However, the seating is very close so it's not that intimate. The menu descriptions were a bit confusing, but our waiter was extremely helpful and answered all of our questions. We tried to be adventurous, and everything we ordered was delicious, particularly the market fish, the duck confit, and the brussel sprouts. We ordered 5 dishes for 2 (one of which was a small cheese plate) and were completely stuffed before dessert. It's not cheap, but it's not outrageous either, and it's definitely worth the money. Two drinks, 4 dishes, dessert, plus tip and tax came to $110. I would definitely go back! more

Great food without the attitude 10/3/2004

AOC really provides a stellar dining experience. I mean, last time I was in there I was able to eat bacon wrapped dates stuffed with parmesan while listening to some great music (The Grateful Dead was on while we ate - I really love the laid back vibe there) & being served by a down to earth waiter. I love this place - it manages to be the in spot without being intimidatingly hip. I'm by no means the ""Hollywood"" type, and though I'm surrounded by a bit of that while I'm there, I'm always at ease - how can you not be relaxed with all that wine and cheese in your system. Not to be missed: the aforementioned dates & for dessert, Rocky Road Bread Pudding. I'm a fan for life. Pros: Relaxed atmosphere, Down to earth staff, Stellar food Cons: , Not open for lunch., Not open 24/7. more

A tad overrated! 8/18/2004

A bit overrated... They had this warm duck salad with peaches and nuts...what an oily mess of mesclun greens! we had to hunt for the 3 tiny pieces of dried out duck and bits of walnut. The wine in the glass is only 1/3 full, and at $7-$10/glass, it is not very good. Overall the food is very below expectations and greasy!!! The service was unparalleled, but you don't go to a restaurant like this for the service alone. more

great little tastes 8/9/2004

Finally tried AOC. Arrived a bit late and hostess was totally cool and sat us right away. Waitress was friendly and helpful. three of us had nine different wines by the glass and twelve different foods. Alll were very small portions that only gave a few bites to each of us. All were fantastick. Standouts were the selection of cheeses, pate plate (loved the rabbit with pistachios) , fish (sea bass with a sort of curry spice rub with carrot pure) skirt steak, pork cheeks were amazing as were the morrels. We moved to the bar for drinks and the bartenders were as cool as our waitress. Its not a cheap night out at all, but everything was fantastic. I loved it. more
