Editorial review from Citysearch 6/3/2013

Honestly, no one in this salon can color hair like Dave, the owner. (sorry Dave). I've never met anyone more willing to please and give me EXACTLY the color i want like he has. He really is a genius with color, and I always leave this salon very satisfied. The prices are very reasonable as well. Highly recommend!! more

Dave has given me a look that made me look younger and gave me confidence. He does not rush and give you just any old cut or color. He really takes pride in what he does. I am so happy that I went here. You have no idea. It is also a friendly place, No snobs. I will be going back for sure. Everyone in my family can't believe the magic he did with my hair. more

The Angry Chair makes for happy customers :) 3/7/2012

Had such an amazing time at The Angry Chair yesterday in Newington on the turnpike. Dave went above and beyond to accomplish the hair color that I wanted. Even has later appointments which is perfect for my schedule. Such a well balanced individual. Extremely sociable, very expressive, gives humble gratitude for the slightest compliment, all while rocking out to metal music. Could not have been a better experience. If you need a cut or color, go there! I can't wait to go back! I cannot even begin to recount how many compliments I have had on my hair in less than 24 hours. Even a little girl at my sons daycare spun around and smiled huge to make a double take at my new hair color. more

Totally Awesome! 2/29/2012

My friend has been going to the Angry Chair for years and always told me I should check it out. I finally went last night and had Dave as my artist. He was super nice the second I walked in the door. I gave him an incredibly vague idea of what I was looking for. I think I said, ""I need something that's moderately professional for work, and I saw a short-ish long-ish cut online that I liked (I provided NO photo)"". I didn't really give him anything else to go on. He asked some questions about me, what I do, what I like, etc? I've had black hair and Bettie Paige bangs for about ten years. My husband wanted me to go black and fire-engine red... when I mentioned that to Dave he said, ""you know I'm not really feeling that... that's been you for forever... let's do something that makes people say 'oh wow, that's awesome'... let's make a 'new you'."" I have to point out that it?s really awesome that Dave LISTENED to me blabbing on about myself. He based his idea for my hair on the things I told him about my personal life. That?s not something I?ve EVER experienced anywhere else. Dave listened to music and rocked out hard-core while doing ?his thing?. He kept looking at me from different angles to make my cut something unique? and perfect. I told him at one point he was too hard on himself because he seemed to never be satisfied with what he had done. That kind of personal and work ethic is NOT something that you come by very often in today?s society. I was there for four hours. Dave gave me an amazing cut that frames my face in a really flattering way. I look WAY younger than my age (28), which surprises me every time I look in the mirror. He also took my ?usually dark hair? in a different direction. With his creative freedom, he turned a boring, bland, overly thick and damaged disaster into? well into a work of art. He used over 20 alternating layers of black, fire-engine red, and blonde all over and gave me depth and volume but without needing to use ANY product. My hair looks EXACTLY the way I always used to try to get it to look via styling? (with bump-it?s and AquaNet and clips?) but on its own: because of the cut. The Angry Chair is absolutely somewhere I would recommend to ANYONE who wants to have a great experience. The customer service is outstanding. The talent is unbelievable. And at the end of my four hours, the price is what amazed me the most. I went there expecting to spend some VERY serious money, especially after spending four hours there and seeing the final product. When Dave told me what he was going to charge me, I honestly was dumbfounded. He seriously undercharged me for the services rendered. Thanks SO much Dave. You can ABSOLUTELY count on seeing me again. :) more

BEST HAIR SALON!! 1/21/2012

I just got my hair done at Angry Chair today for the first time. The hairstylist that did my hair was Maggie and she was awesome!! I went in there, told her what I wanted and got exactly what I asked for...but more. She asked me what I wanted instead of just doing a basic cut and would also tell me what would look good. She seemed like she really cared about how my hair came out where at other salons I felt rushed or they just wanted to get it over with. Maggie made sure my hair was exactly how I wanted. I've came out of a salon so many times disapointed but this was aboslutely perfect. Everyone else in the salon was also really nice and welcoming. I definitely suggest this salon for everyone. Some people think it's only for a certain age and what not but there was an older woman in the chair next to me..men, women teenagers, and everyone seemed pleased with the service!!! more

Best hair experience ever! 12/25/2011

I love The Angry Chair! I am probably not the typical client of this salon being in my 40's but after reading the reviews I felt in my gut that Dave was the hair artist for me. Being an artist (oil painter) I want something as intimate and reflective of my personality as my hairstyle is, to be handled as if it is a work of art which is exactly what happen. Dave more than lived up to my expectations. He took the time to get it perfect. At my age I have had my hair done a lot and I am delighted to say I have never been as happy with the results as I was with Dave in The Angry Chair! My husband, friends, family and even strangers have complimented me on my great new look. The color is fantastic, going much lighter to match the white I was afraid it would be fried but Dave took the time to get it right without over processing and damaging my hair. The cut, well let me tell you, I gave him a general idea of what I was looking for and gave him the artistic license to match my hair to my lifestyle and personality which he absolutely did!! I couldn't be more adamant whatever your age if you are young at heart and want a truly edgy chic look plop yourself down in The Angry Chair and prepare to be delighted with the results! more

Unique and Excellent 9/15/2011

I've been in barber shops and salons from LA to Boston. The Angry Chair is the only place I've gone to for a haircut where I felt instantly comfortable when I first set foot in the door. The music was awesome, the decor was cool, and Dave had a set of weights set up so clients could work out while they were waiting! The hair cuts I get from Dave always look great, and even if I wait too long between cuts, my hair still looks good as it grows out. They are willing to do pretty much anything clients ask them to do, although they give their honest opinion when they think something really won't work. You might see some pretty extreme cuts and color jobs there (especially if you go before Halloween), and that's part of the fun. I guess that's my final impression: you might think that a place called ""Angry Chair"" would be all ""Grrrrrrrrr...."", but actually its really relaxed and fun. more

Amazing! 8/6/2011

Dave is amazing! He's cut my hair for about two to three years now, & he always does such a wonderful job! He's dyed my hair countless times too, always comes out amazing! I love going to Angry Chair. Dave & the rest make you feel so welcome & comfortable. It's the first salon I feel I can be myself & I love that feeling of openness that the Angry Chair has. I definitely recommend Angry Chair. An amazing place, with awesome people. Dave goes out of his way to help you. I went in & told him I wanted Ariel (little mermaid) red hair, he went out to buy more dye for me so I could get the look I wanted! So amazing of him to do that! I've never felt like a hair stylist ever wanted to help me as much as Dave does. If you want to get any sort of hair cut or dye definitely go to the Angry Chair! more

AMAZING dye job! 7/14/2011

Don't let the name The Angry Chair intimidate you! The place itself has a nice metal flair, especially with the decor in the new location, but the atmosphere inside is nothing except for totally laid back. You can plug your own iPod into the speakers and listen to whatever you want during your haircut, first of all, so don't be deterred by the idea that you might have to listen to metal the whole time if you don't like it! I only had a vague idea of what I wanted done to my hair when I went in. That's where Dave came in. As soon as I started talking to him I could tell that he saw the potential in my head, and wanted me to leave looking my absolute best. Like it wasn't just about a haircut for him, like because I wanted something different, original, challenging, he saw the opportunity to create a work of art. I came in after not having a haircut for close to half a year and told Dave that I wanted to look like a hyena. Even though I was a half hour late, he was nice enough to start right away- He loved the idea of hyenahair an' immediately got out his laptop and started looking at pictures online with me so we could figure out what would really work with my hair. Before he actually did any work on it, we talked out exactly what I wanted so we both knew what we were getting into. Of important note is when he was cutting my hair initially, I wanted it really short on the sides and the back, but he didn't want to use the clippers, he instead started to cut the entirity of my head freehand, with a pair of scissors. I asked him why and his response, to me, summed up the way that he cuts hair. ""When I use the clippers, everything looks a little bit too clean, like military style. It's just kinda' impersonal."" This struck me pretty hard, that this guy would put in the extra effort to make sure that this cut was as original, as perfectly handcrafted as it could possibly get. And I was even more amazed when he got it down to the same length as if he had clipped it-- And he was right, it looked a lot more natural that way! Dave poured himself into his work when he was doing my cut, and while I had dye sitting in I saw him doing the same to the rest of the customers. He was even talking to everyone with GENUINE interest, not just droning mundane questions like you're usually subjected to at hair ""salons."" Seriously, if you sit down here for a haircut you're going to have a good time if you're the sort of person who likes to meet interesting people, and ESPECIALLY if you like to laugh. Waiting for the dye to sit in wasn't even a bore, either. They've got the smallest full-grown cat I've ever seen, along with toys you can use to make it spaz out- My hair came out AMAZING. I don't know what's better, how little kids at the mall tell me that my hair looks awesome, or how their mothers insistently pull them away when they notice they're talking to me! It's been three weeks and the dye job has stayed perfect, and I still get compliments on it every si more

Pretty much Perfection 6/15/2011

So, I would have to say that it wouldn't be a stretch if you called me high maintenance. With that being said, I absolutely LOVE my hair every time I walk out of Angry Chair! more

Angry Chair does INSANELY AWESOME HAIR 6/11/2011

I've been going to Angry Chair for about a year now, and I always leave with my hair looking amazing. Lara is an incredibly talented stylist, and has been able to produce the perfect haircut/color for me based on the very minimal guidelines I give her, as well as my personality. I feel completely comfortable going in there with no idea what I want, and giving Lara complete artistic control. If you're looking for a hairdresser, go to the countless other salons in CT. If you're looking for people who are true artists in their line of work, go to the Angry Chair. more

Angry Chair 5/16/2011

I've been patronizing Angry Chair for about two years. Dave creates my color and cut, and I have NEVER looked better! Laura's clients always walk out looking amazing, too. These are two very talented artists, who although offbeat, never fail to amaze! The salon is super casual, and if you don't like metal and hair bands, the place may not be for you, but I always find it fun, energizing and never, ever boring! By the way, I'm over 50 and I love it!!!! more

The Angry Chair 5/15/2011

I have been going to The Angry Chair for a few years and I am a very satisfied customer. Over the years, I have been to several salons , spending ridiculous amount s of money for poor quality, leaving so unhappy but that was not the case with Dave. Dave is an amazing hair stylist, colorist etc., and going to him is worth every penny I spend!! Over the years, coming in early or waiting for my color to develop I have seen him do amazing colors and styles on both young and older people, from funky colors and cuts to more reserved looks, whatever it is he does , he does EXCEPTIONAL! I have also witnessed what a great repore he has with his customers. I find him to be so very personable, respectful and funny, he goes out of his way to make you feel comfortable. At the end of the appt, he always makes certain you are happy, if not, he will gladly fix it. He will come in on days he is closed, Dave is just awsome and amazing. I have recommended him to friend and family and they feel the same. If you are thinking about going to The Angry Chair , do not hesitate!! more

They ""Get"" Me 5/8/2011

Dave is amazingly talented when given the time and creative freedom he needs to do his best work. Here are 5 steps to making the most of your Angry Chair experience with Dave: 1. Before you make your appointment, decide if you want color and if so, tell them so when you call to schedule. Keep in mind that Angry Chair appointments are longer than salon visits because of the personalization that goes into your look; pick a day free from other obligations, and avoid their busiest times if possible so that Dave can focus his attention on you. 2. Before your visit, consider your style preferences (length, colors, etc.) and what styling you are willing to do each day (flat-ironing, blow-drying, etc.). It's best not to pick a specific haircut ahead of time - just think about your style in a general way. Then, at the start of your appointment, Dave will strike up a conversation - that's the time to share all your style information with him so that he can create a hairstyle that truly suits you. 3. Once all your style info is out there, let Dave do his thing! The less direction I give him, the better I look at the end of the appointment. He has an eye for what looks good on me, and he always asks before doing anything drastic. I never worry about leaving with a look that isn't ""me."" 4. After the cut and/or color, Dave will style your hair. PAY ATTENTION, and ask questions. If you're not sure how to do something that he's doing, he will show you. You can also ask what products he's using. 5. When Dave is done styling, he'll hand you a mirror and spin you around so you can see your new 'do from all angles. If there is anything you don't like, TELL HIM. He will talk with you some more until he understands exactly what you don't like about it, and then he'll offer some solutions. I trust no one other than Dave with my hair. The extra time I spend in his chair translates into less time in front of the mirror at home. He totally ""gets"" me, so I always leave with a style that's truly me. more

BE WARNED!!!!!!!! 3/10/2011

This place left me speechless. Not only was it DIRTY but extremely UNPROFESSIONAL. The hair ""stylist"" did not know what color to apply to my hair, EVEN when I showed her exactly what I wanted, she had the look of a deer in headlights. The outcome was unbelievable - my hair was damaged to the point of no repair. more

I've been going to the angry chair for several years now: yes, the shop is more ""casual"" than some which make it more comfortable. more

bad experience 7/25/2008

I have been going to this salon for about a year (if not longer) and loved the way the girl did my hi-lites and cut. I called to make an appmt and was informed that she was no longer there. They gave me someone else to do my hilites and cut. This person did such a terrible job!! Not only was my hair ORANGE but she was supposed to straighten it for me and it was curly in back on the bottom. I was so agravated that I called them a few days later to speak with the manager/owner who i left a message for and he never called me back. Gotta love the customer service...NOT! Cons: everything more

unprofessional and dirty 6/4/2008

I understand the look the angry chair is going for, which is what i expected to recieve, HOWEVER i sat in the salon for about six hours....still leaving very unhappy. Sinks were disgusting and had hair in them...i probably should of ran but tried to stay optimistic. The girl doing my hair was probably the worst colorist ive ever been too...and still charged me the price of a high end salon. I noticed alot of their products were from sally beauty supply...which is gross in my opinion. If i am going to pay 130 dollars to get my hair cut and colored...it better not be some generic SH*T. NOt to mention the stylist claimed to not have to toner she needed to fix my hair...wait and you are a salon? NEVER GO HERE unless you dont give a f*ck about what you look like. Left with almost everything i said i was trying to avoid....and orange hair. Think twice! more

The Angry Chair Rocks 11/13/2006

The Angry Chair is a great place to get your hair done, whether you're looking for blue and purple spikes or something more traditional, the stylists are amazing and cool people to hang with while you're there. I have been to many different salons and day spas in the West Hartford area, but my hair looks best after going to see Dave at The Angry Chair. Pros: Relaxed, Fun environment, Great Value for your money, Late hours and Weekends Cons: Sometimes they're running behind, however they'll take just as much time making sure you're satisfied before they're done with you too. more
