Editorial review from Citysearch 10/6/2012

I have been going to Angelo Mesisco's for nearly 20 years and I LOVE THEM! I have always been treated with the utmost kindness and professionalism. I have been stopped on the street many times and received compliments on my hair cut and color! Patty and Jan can never retire!! They are the best! more

Great for cut, BAD for color. 5/1/2012

I lived in the Norfolk/Va Beach area for many years, & Karen always cut my hair. She's the best. I got many many compliments. No stylist before or since has done such a great job. \r \r BUT. I had my hair highlighted at another area salon (No Rootz), & was very pleased w/the results, but since I was visiting in Norfolk & I was on a tight schedule, I thought I'd schedule an appointment at Mesisco to touch up the root area. AWFUL. First, instead of doing a touchup (per my appointment), the colorist decided to foil my entire head. The price was about 5x what I was told the my appointment would cost. Then, although I told the staff when I made the appointment that I was on a tight schedule, the colorist took several hours to foil my hair, & then left me to sit under a heat lamp for several more hours for the ""highlights"" to ""develop."" Finally, after the foil was removed & my hair washed, the ""highlights"" were nonexistent. I could have done as well myself with a $10 DITY kit from CVS. I will NEVER go back to Mesisco for color, & from the other reviews I've seen, I'm not the only disappointed customer.\r \r If you want a terrific haircut, you can't do better than Karen (at Mesisco). If you want color/highlights, I recommend No Rootz (Colleen). That's where I got my original highlights done, & that's where I've had my touchups, & they've always done a beautiful job. more

Professional Atmosphere 7/3/2011

I am a Senior consultant at a Change Management consulting firm where image is everything. (AVID Professional & Personal Growth Programs - AP2GP) I had two haircuts one by Angelo the other by Stephanie. I was satisfied with both cuts. Stephanie took off more than Angelo, but when the hair grew back in they both had the same quality cut. I really enjoyed the professional treatment. I was led to the back room to remove my top and put on a smock. They also take great care to understand what I want to get out of my hair cut and through synergy created a masterpiece for me. As you can see from my picture I could use to go back for a more update and new look. I am told they have a wonderful manicure and pedicure service, but would have to call a different number to make an appointment. I wish they didn more

Mortified 4/3/2011

I just moved to Ghent and assumed because of the location and product line they carry that Angelo Mesisco Salon would be quality. All I can say is that every time I look in the mirror I can' t believe what is staring back at me. I went in with ""virgin"" medium brown hair to get a few honey colored hightlights. Jan, the colorist, said due to the thickness of my hair she wanted to ""hair paint"" instead, which is essentially highlighting in specific places without the foil. I woke up the next morning with thick yellow stripes down my head. Went in that day to have it ""fixed"". She put a base brown glaze color on to ""calm it"". I then had bright orange stripes. Because I didn't want to overprocess, I waited a month, went back in yesterday and told her to get rid of the orange. She instead put another red base brown in my hair and it turned, literally, deep red. Horrified, she quickly threw a dark bown, non-red, on top of it. Today, the day after, it is distinctively the color of a Burnt Sienna Crayola Crayon. I'm a professional in my early 40's and have the hair color of a 20 year old punk rocker from the 80's. She asked me what she thought she should do to correct the color, that she was out of ideas and kept apologizing over and over again saying she had never had this happen before...but she's supposed to be the expert. When I asked the receptionist for the owner's information she scribbled something completely unreadable on the back of a business card and I was so mad I just left. I look ridiculous, From medium brown wanting honey highlights to now overall burnt dark orangey-red. I don't even know what to do now to fix this--it's beyond words ugly and unnatural, like I was trying for an ""artsy"" look, when what I asked for originally was subtle highlights. I believe I'm going to pursue legal action if they don't give me my money back and pay to have this corrected. But where? If someone has an answer, please share. A HORRIBLE place all around. By the way, if I could rate a negative star, I would. more

TOO EXPENSIVE AND MISLEAD 9/28/2010

I just recently moved to Norfolk after coming off of Active Duty from the Navy. I spent years in uniform and had to conform to their grooming standards, which is not very stylish. So, I decided I wanted a new me which included dying my hair a two toned blonde and some type of an auburn. My hair was previsouly colored auburn and I liked it very much. I did have two inches of growth, my natrual hair color is dark brown, and thought that it would be a difficult process but defintely do-able. I booked an appointment with Jessica and got there 20 mins early due to military timeliness and all...just a habit I guess. The receptionist paged Jessica and after waiting for 45 mins I was finally approached by a woman who I thought was Jessica but it wasn't. It was one of their many ""helpers"", I guess you can say, and she complimented my dress and then asked me to take it off and put a robe on....weird. I politely declined and told her I would perfer to keep my dress on put the robe over it. She then escorted me upstairs and was a little annoyed because it's not easily accessable for those who have issues with climbing stairs, I've had two knee surgeries. I sit down and Jessica is working on someone else and she told me it would only be a couple of mins. It was about 10 mins later and she asked me what I wanted and I explained to her what I did want. She basically told me that if I did to my hair what I wanted that it would be costly, beginning at 140 dollars and to save money that I should just go with highlights. I was a little let down because this wasn't what I expected but I'm no hair colorist. She then gave me some magazines to look at, no professional haircut or hair color books which I thought would be better to look at, and we found nada. All the women in the magazines either had what I was looking for or were all blonde or brunette. So she suggested to keep the auburn and put highlights and low lights to give it dimension. I agreed. Fast foward to about 1.5 hours later I had two other people who were not stylist touch my hair, wash it and blow dry it. Not only was the person who was blow drying my hair not know what he was doing, but he told me that my hair color before was fugly and I really liked that color. The finished product was shocking to me. Not only was it not auburn, it was a very dull brown, like it was a demi perm that had it's lustor washed out, but it had ash blonde highlights that in the light looked like grey hair. On top of that my hair was frizzy at the bottom and it looked like my five year old nephew got a hold of my blow drier and was playing with my hair. I asked for a haircut and Jessica informed me that she does not cut hair and I could schedule an appointment with someone downstairs. That for me is a first because I've had my hair colored and cut since I can remember and all my stylist knew how to do both. When I went to the receptionist to pay I was floored with the price, she said ""that will be 175 dollars please"". I thought Jessica was trying to help me save money, remembering that she had previously told me that she was trying to help me out since what I wanted from the begining was going to cost 140 plus. So after paying, the receptionist asked me what time and date I wanted my next appointment...not ""would you like to schedule another appointment"". I didn't get five mins to take it all in before she asked me that.To make matters a little more sucky I was told that they would validate my parking, which they did, but I still had to pay for it! All and all it was too expensive and just because it looks ""trendy"" and offer's complimentary coffee and lemonade doesn't mean it's the best. more

LIKE A PARISIAN HAIR SALON 8/6/2010

I researched online to find Kerastase products that were scarce to be sold in the States at that time & found to my delight that one of the extremely RARE salons to be allowed to sell it was near my backyard in Norfolk, Va., Angelo Mesisco Salon. (In the US, this requires very high scrutiny by the products' parent company.)\r OK, to say that Precious Jessica is 'outstanding' would be an understatement both on a person level as well as a professional level! She studied with Jose Eber in Calif. & YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR & then some. \r She is by far the best I have ever seen! I must say though that I have been quite happy with color I have received from their other colorists when Jessica left to have a baby.\r This salon is set up like a Paris hair salon where I originally became acquainted with Kerastase products hence, the departmentalization.\r You will feel very welcome upon arrival, during & when you leave feel like a precious object that has had the royal treatment handled with velvet gloves.\r THIS IS NO ORDINARY SALON! 5 STAR MINIMUM! more

A Grownup, Sophisticated Salon 10/30/2008

When I first went to Angelo Mesisco Salon, I was a worn out new mom with a frazzled French braid. Angelo gave me a sleek, beautiful bob and I came out of the salon looking like someone who suddenly remembered the meaning of the word ""style."" Later Karen became my regular stylist. She not only knows what my hair will and won't do, she knows I need a haircut that requires no more than two minutes of my attention to look great. An avowed bargain hunter, I have realized that an amazing haircut at Angelo Mesisco Salon is a good value because it lasts 8 full weeks and makes me look and feel like a million bucks! As for the salon itself, it is spotless, sleek and modern. Fresh flowers are everywhere, excellent coffee and lemonade are available for clients in the comfortable, light-filled waiting area. Angelo's cool paintings grace the entrance and hallway, and there is a tempting array of beauty products besides. I don't understand why a couple of people think the shampoo area is dated - what do they want - Lazy Boy recliners? As for the ""cast of thousands"" alluded to by one reviewer, you have one person shampoo and dry your hair and another cut it. If you get color, that's a third person who specializes in that area. So you have two or three people pampering you! And the result is that even strangers will compliment you on your hair! I love the place! Pros: Beautiful, precision haircuts, capable of creating subtle color changes, sophisticated grownup ambiance Cons: Underappreciated by a couple of their clients! more

The best in town 10/29/2008

I recently had a fabulous experience at this salon. The space is very attractive and clean, and I received a warm greeting upon arriving. I had an appointment for single-process color and haircut. I waited no more than 3 or so minutes before someone came to the lobby to whisk me up to the color area. The colorist was knowledgeable and friendly, and the products used are top of the line. My experience with the stylist was also great, and right on time. The salon uses (as well as sells) Kerastase products, which are wonderful. In addition to a terrific hair and skin care product line, the salon has a fun, eclectic selection of retail products for sale. I made my next appointment for services as I checked out, and have become a regular based on one visit alone. It was just a great visit from start to finish. Pros: Ambience, friendliness, knowledgeable staff more

Best Salon in Norfolk 10/29/2008

I have been coming to Angelo Mesisco Salon for years, and I always leave there with a good feeling. I honestly cannot think of a haircut I got there that I didn't like. The staff is very friendly, and they always have good suggestions. The facility is modern and conveniently located in downtown Norfolk. Also, unlike many salons, there is not a lot of turnover, so it is never a gamble whether you will receive a good haircut or not. Pros: Friendly staff, great haircuts, excellent facility Cons: None that I can think of more

Great Colorist, expensive, poor followup customer service 10/20/2008

Jessica colored my hair, she was great, very friendly and did a great job which lasted for months. (I get highlights which on alternate months need to have a lot done.) My beef is that I told Jessica I was possibly leaving the area and she suggested that if I did leave, that I should simply telephone her and she would provide me with tips on what was required at a future salon to ensure that they tried to maintain my color without over doing it.\r \r I made 4 different long distance telephone calls to speak wth Jessica but was never successful in reaching her. I was told on each occasion by the receptionist that Jessica was with a client but would definitely ring me back immediately after finishing with that client. I never received a return call. When I mentioned this to the receptionist on my 4th call she became belligerent and rude stating some rubbish that they were not permitted to provide details of work carried out because of possible litigation that could be made against them. This is totally preposterous and in all honesty I think falls under terrible customer service.\r \r The salon itself is pretty old fashioned (I've had my hair done in beautiful salons around the world), it needs modernising, particularly the washing station, and especially for the prices they charge. The girl that washed my hair put so much water in my ears that it took days for it to fully come out, and she was quite rough and perfunctory. Have they never heard of giving a client a head massage as a touch of luxury and to help the conditioner through your hair?? I also think it's a very strange practice to have one person do part of your hair and then be shunted off to a cast of thousands to complete the service. I think tipping is ridiculous at these prices anyway, but how do you know who to tip on these occasions because it seems as though almost everyone at the salon has touched your head in some way - weird.\r \r So in short, expensive, & hope u never need them to call you! Pros: Jessica is a great colorist Cons: Expensive, cast of 1000's involved with different steps to complete your hair, they dont return your calls for followup questions. more

Very unhappy 10/14/2008

After wearing my hair in the same basic style for the past 20 years, I was looking for a new style. I brought a page from GQ to show the stylist what I was looking for - I normally get my hair cut every 2 weeks and had let it grow for 6. My new wife works in Norfolk and had heard great things about mens cuts at this salon - she made the appt and reluctantly I agreed and left the beach for my appt. I was not facing the mirror as she cut and when she turned me around I was shocked to see my ""military"" type haircut! I couldn't believe it - it was nothing like I asked for or that we discussed. It was so short that I had to let it grow for 6 more weeks before I had enough hair to go back to my old place and return to my same tired style. It was a hugh disappointment for my wife and I and I would never even consider going back! Pros: good looking stylist Cons: terrible results at a premium price more

Great place to go if you want a super-short haircut 10/13/2008

I had written a review previously, and have since gone back for my second visit. In my last review I gave them 3 stars because the salon is nice, the colorist did a good job, but the stylist gave me a super-short cut that looked nothing like the picture I brought in. \r \r I thought it might have been my fault, because the picture was black and white and maybe she couldn't see it that well. I let my hair grow out for 3 months and, not wanting to take any chances, asked for a ""senior stylist"". This time I brought six pictures, and instructions from the website where I got the pictures. Not only did the stylist not follow the instructions, but the cut does look like the pictures!!! I'm so upset. Not once, but twice, and two different stylists - and BOTH times I left with a cut much shorter than what I requested. I even said ""Please don't cut my hair super short - I want the length.""\r \r I don't know if the stylists here think they know what you want better than you do, or if they just don't pay attention, but that is the last time I will go. I can't believe I gave it another shot - only to end up with yet another super-short cut.\r \r If super-short is your thing - then I recommend it. If you want your hair to touch your shoulders or longer - go somewhere else. Pros: Great color; convenient location; tons of products; goodie bag of samples at check-out; reasonably priced Cons: Not giving the cut a client asked for - HELLO?!?? Why would you do this?? more

Not worth the money. 9/15/2008

I decided to get a hair cut here after reading the reviews and I wish I hadn't. To spend the kind of money that this place charges on a hair cut you would expect a decent level of customer service. I was made to feel more like I was intruding on my stylist's time and she said maybe three sentences to me through the whole process. This is the most I've ever spent for a cut and the least attentive stylist I've ever had, which is not a combination that makes me want to come back. The cut itself came out fine but my hair is long and the cut is simple so it wasn't that challenging. Pros: clean, organized Cons: inattentive, pricy more

Urban Cool Classy salon 10/1/2007

This salon is great - the staff is friendly and professional, from the front desk to the hair washing, al the way to the haircut! Patty cut my hair and gave me great advice on color. I live in the neighborhood and tried it on a whim. I am very happy with my cut, my style, and will absolutely return in the future. How lucky for me it is so convenient! Pros: Downtown near the mall, restaurants, etc Cons: ??? more

Best Salon EVER! 6/5/2007

Great salon 5/24/2007

I like the way the salon is departmentalized. The hair cutters were great, the colorists were polite and professional, and I even managed to get in a massage. more

Worst colorist ever 4/27/2007

I went here without having someone recommend it first, which is usually not a good idea, but I thought since they carried Kerastase products and seemed fairly busy, that it must be good. I was so wrong. I got an ok haircut, but Jill butchered my color. I asked for natural caramel highlights. What I got was bright yellow streaks and a 3 inch orange chemical burn horizontal across the highlights. Now $200 later I have to go and have it fixed, although the chemical damage to my hair has been done. I do NOT recommend this salon to anyone. Hair Cuttery would be a better option to the hack job I received. Pros: Product selection Cons: Colorist, parking, cost more

User review by cbvbritt 3/9/2006

Angelo Mesisco is by far the best place to have your hair cut or colored in the Hampton Roads. No place I have visited even comes close. The colorists are especially able. Pros: expert hair care, knowledgeable staff Cons: parking, pricy more
