Alan's Auto Volvo clearly cared about my old Volvo and....cared for it! Sure I spent some money to get things repaired, but, as much as I hate to admit it, she isn't invincible!? ...

Worst

Run, don't walk... Insisted on $4k in "repairs" on car only worth $1.8k. Became violent when asked to stop work. Be forewarned

Alan Auto Volvo 7/28/2010

Just as I like to take my dog to a veterinarian who loves dogs, I take my car to Alan Auto. The man clearly loves Volvos! The hour plus commute from NH is well worth the effort. I have always been provided with a loaner, Alan always explains to me in detail and with great patience exactly what repairs need to be done and why. The work is completed on schedule and with reliable results which is critical given my extensive traveling. My car comes back to me fixed and noticeably cleaner to boot. Alan always answers the phone and can be dealt with directly. I've even reached him on a Sunday when I was having car issues. additionally, Ive owned my Vovo since 1998, and Alan's garage has been the most satisfactory and hassle-free to work with. more

Alan Auto Volvo Portland Maine 7/13/2010

I am the original owner of a 1993 Volvo 240. I have used Alan Auto for ten years for the many and complex needs of an older car. This business and all who work within it have been on time and on target with every need my great old car has had. This place is a godsend for people who want car work done well, thoroughly, ethically and responsibly. more

Alan went the distance 7/8/2010

While vacationing in Maine, my car decided to overheat and i noticed one of my tires went flat just after i arrived. Anyone can relate to the stress and hassle this kind of situation can invoke! I called Alan's Auto Service without knowing anything about him or his business. Wow, I'm glad i did! He really came through for me! He kept me well informed about every step, and had me back on the road in two and a half days! (Even with a holiday) I'm gratefull that he was the guy i called first, and would highly recommend him for any work you need done on your Volvo! Thanks again, Alan! more

Good, knowledgeable service 7/6/2010

Keeping a ten+year-old Volvo on the road and running well can be a challenge. Alan is very knowledgeble about the quirks in each model year and does not use the cheap, after-market parts that so many repar shops use. We recently had Alan do major work on a 2000 XC that another mechanic had written off and yet another had priced at over $3,000. Alan did the work for half the other mechanic's estimate and gave us lots of good advice on keeping the car in great shape, more

Excellence is a habit! 6/30/2010

This wildly favorable endorsement of Alan Auto is a bit of a cautionary tale. When I first purchased my Volvo from his shop years back I knew that my ‘92 740 wagon was in for a bit of a rough ride, what with living in Boston. What I didn’t quite appreciate were the mechanical “potholes” that would come with city driving. Sure, I found places to perform routine service, however, when the day arrived to address the more serious and unique issues, back to Maine I went (and now always go). If you’re like me and believe that excellence is not a singular act, but a habit, Alan and his crew are without equal. more

Alan helped our son on his day off! 4/12/2010

Alan is the best! My son, traveling back to school, had car problems. We live out of state and found Alan Auto Volvo Service on the Web. Alan was kind enough to help our son on the day his shop was closed. He fixed our son's car in no time at all! Thank you very much. more

Service 3/28/2010

My experience with this company was not good--my Volvo left with more issues than it went in with, and when I took the car to the dealer for a check up, they found a lot of negligent (deliberate?) errors that would have been very costly. Alan Auto is unreliable and dishonest, and has a long reputation as doing shoddy work. Do not go there. more

quality of service 2/21/2010

I have been a satisfied costumer of Alan Auto from it's beginning and as a Mechanical Engineer I very much appreciate their approach and skill in repair and maintenance.I have owned six Volvos ,still own two, both bought from Alan. Alan believes in the integrity of the design. As I do. So,if you want a bailing wire fix go else ware. Alan's approach will save you money in the long run and Volvos are a long running automobile. Thank you Alan! 2/4/2010

I went to Alan in the middle of December with my very much broken 1999 volvo, it was chugging and not driveable, it turned out it was the electonic throttle system, Alan blessed me with a free loaner for 2 weeks while I tried to figure out how I was going to fix my car on my tight budget. Eventually with alot of help from Alan, my car was repaired and returned to me just in time for Christmas. My car is running better than ever! Alans mechanics know what they're doing and get the job done, Alan and his office manager Amanda are two of the kindest people I've ever met, they proved to me that there are still nice people in this world. I would never take my car anywhere else. Thanks again Alan! you truly are my hero! more

Volvo Repair in Portland 1/19/2010

We have a 1990 Volvo 240 wagon and have been customers of Alan's for five years. We realize that Alan takes what he does very seriously and is definitely a Volvo lover and expert. Unlike Judy and Vincent our experience has been extremely positive. Not only have Alan and his mechanics taken great care of our car but in particular we have gotten extensive explanations for every- thing he does. Alan cares for your car and you. Fortunately for Judy and Vincent there is a choice of Volvo service but when your car is hopelessly broken you'll be back to Alan. Joe & Nomi more

Don't go here 8/20/2009

Amen to what Vincent says: the owner is known for dishonesty and deliberate errors that will cause you to pay more when, oh heavens, you find that something else is broken that was never an issue when you took it in for another repair. After an extremely bad experience I took my Volvo to two other mechanics who both said the owner should not only be out of business BUT should be in jail for his sheisty business practices. Buyer Beware. more

Bad in every way 10/23/2006

Expensive, dishonest, arrogant, and doesn't stand behind his work. This man has a well-deserved reputation for dishonesty and arrogance among Volvo owners who have been in Portlland for a while. Unfortunately, newcomers to the area usually have to lose a few thousand bucks before getting clued in. If he says you need anything done to your car, I'd look for a second opinion, and if he does anything to your car, I'd have somebody double-check what's been done. Oh, when you drop off or pick up your car, don't be surprised if he leaves you standing in front of his desk for a half hour or more while he carries one of his long, rambling, psychologically-overbearing phone conversations with another customer. (There's not a chance that he'll take care of you first and call them back.) Ask around town, I'm not the only one with a low opinion of this outfit. more
