Editorial review from Citysearch 9/21/2012

First of all. Sergio was our server. He wasn't excellent due to the fact that he we never got him to come to the table. These two younger ladies delivered our food and had to tell us that they ran out of refried beans. But when our food got delivered two people had refried beans and the others didn't. My meal was bean and cheese nachos. Without even asking they made my meal with black beans. Then the manager Norm throughout all of this is standing chuckling to himself about this situation right behind me. So the management didn't want to take care of anything. He continued to ""escape"" the building within a matter of 5 minutes. Terrible service! I will never come back to this location. If Norm is there I will continue to pass on my story and words to many others who I talk to. Believe me when we went last night, three people who heard we were going to Alamo Cafe (that specific location) they turned down and would not come to dinner. Really upsetting when a manager wants to do absolutely nothing about it. I know when I go to a restaurant I treat people the way I want to be treated. The even funnier thing is they only took off $40 worth. So when I got my new meal I did not even want to eat or order. Did we get charged for the reorders. Pathetic that you guys run your restaurant like that. Also to end the night Aaron another manager finally came to talk to our table to apologize. He was some sort of a man. I think its hilarious that you have such terrible servers and management. Just remember our group of 10 will forward our experience to everyone that asks. Also statistics show...80% of restaurant business is from word of mouth. Huh, that is interesting. One unhappy customer tells nine others on a day to day basis. Good luck. Will not be back. more

Mediocre 2/12/2008

Honestly...I was excited to eat here and reserved it for a birthday dinner with family from out of town. The outside (I-10 location) looked intriguing--imagine my surprise when I walked in and saw that it was pretty boring. I was famished and my dinner (enchilada and taco, rice, beans) was fine--nothing great, nothing terrible. I left feeling let down and decided that, while it wasn't a total loss/waste of time, I won't be making a return trip. FYI: I may be gringa but I appreciate authentic Mexican food and this was very Velveeta/Pace tasting. Guess I shouldn't have expected Oaxacan queso and homemade spicy salsa from a place called Alamo Cafe. Pros: Plenty of parking, fast service Cons: Blah--nothing special more

Its just not good. 12/12/2007

I don't see where people say it soooo great?! It's pretty average, non-authentic tex-mex AND its expensive! The only thing good is the tortillas they serve before the meal. other than that....skip it! Its like tourist food. if you want good fajitas that are at a chain resturant...go to Pappasito's! Its a chain but i swear those beef fajitas are the best anywhere! Pros: the tortillas before the meal Cons: everything else more

Best Tortillas in Town!! 10/19/2007

You should check out this restaurant. I got the chicken fried stead dinner with fries and green beans. The green beans hi t the spot for my craving of ""home-cooking"" they use a lot of pepper in it...reminds me how my dad makes it. The chicken fried steak was good not great. The tortillas are great!! Light warm and just the right softness and I really liked the taste, my boyfriend who is Hispanic said ""this is what tortillas should taste like!"" Pros: Open till midnight on weekends Cons: Prices seemed a little high more

Great all around Tex-Mex food. 11/2/2006

All the food is wonderful. It's always easy to get seated with only short waits at the very busiest of times. A great place to take out-of-towners. Pros: Good food, good price, always room. more

Best Queso in San Antonio 10/11/2006

The Alamo Cafe has the best tortillas and queso my family and I have ever had. Best retaurant in town! more

Tourist food! 11/13/2005

Alamo Cafe is tourist food, plane and simple! If you want real Tex-Mex or real Mexican food, look elsewhere. more

Alamo Cafe 4/8/2004

I can't count the number of times I've been to this restaurant. The homemade tortillas they serve free as an appetizer are to die for, and you can watch them make them when you go in. The food is good but not fabulous, there are many family owned Mexican restaurants in SanAntonio that have more original and authentic cuisine. Still for the overall price and atmosphere, it is a good place to eat, especially for large groups and family's (they also have many non-mexican food options for those with American palattes). Be sure to go early on Friday and Saturday as later on you could face a two hour wait and beware the salsa (it is good, but rumors have it that the staff spit in the giant vatt of it in the back). Pros: Good Value., Family friendly., Decent food. Cons: , Noisy, Long table waits. more

Soy City 4/5/2004

I travel for work and have been to all types of restaurants, but all I (and my work colleagues) could think was that someone was recently hired from a chinese restaurant. The soy was so heavy on the fajitas that they were close to inedible. Thank god none of us have to watch our salt or MSG intake! The service was good, but that's all I can say favorably. Even the great ceiling only covers a small portion of the restaurant. So, no chance of enjoying that while we were chokin' down soy. Pros: friendly waitress Cons: , high soy sauce usage, cold room temperature more

Another shining example... 12/23/2003

of white-bread, mass-market, junk Tex-Mex. The new digs are a huge step-up from the old San Pedro location -- wonderful open dining room with relatively attentive service. But if you want authentic Tex-Mex, look elsewhere. Alamo Cafe's Tex-Mex offerings are one step up from the TV dinners I ate as a kid (growing up in SA with Mid-West transplanted parents). Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Food more

Awesome Fajitas 7/30/2003

I have been going to Alamo Cafe since the mid 80's and have the beef fajitas and tortilla soup every time. I think they marinate the fajitas in some addictive substance because I crave them. Great place to meet friends for a casual meal. Pros: Fajitas, Fajitas, Fajitas Cons: waiting for fajitas more

Food Great, Service too slow! 5/25/2003

While the food was terrific, the service was too slow! We had to wait on menus, tea, straws, refills. etc. Never could find our waitor! We might go back not too sure! Staff seemed inexperienced. Pros: Atomosphere, Clean, Great Food Cons: Service, Service, Service! more

i will never go to alamo cafe again 2/7/2003

I would never recommend going to the alamo cafe on 281. My boyfriend and I went there last week, and we will never go there again. After being seated, we got our drinks immediately (2 dr. peppers) and placed our orders (2 enchilada dinner #3s). Alamo cafe was not crowded at the time (it was only 6 pm) and we thought we would get our food almost immediately, but after 45 min passed, 10 min without seeing our waiter, we got up, paid for our sodas, and walked out without ever being served our food. Pros: price, food Cons: parking, service, food is cold more

Disagree!!! Too ""Caucasian"" 2/7/2003

I am a caucasian and I think Alamo Cafe' is too caucasian. It's too commercial. Food is okay, but you can get much better Mexican food for the same price or lower all over town! Pros: Nice atmosphere, Good Service, Inexpensive Cons: Too commercial, Not Authentic, Crowded Parking more

Mexican food in a Mexican town 1/29/2003

I have no reservations about suggesting the Alamo Cafe for good, consistent Mexican food at a good price. They NEVER have a bad night more

Great Food, price OK 12/26/2002

Never disappointed, except I always seem to eat way too much! Very fast service also. I would say price depends on what ya pick, as with most anything. 20 bucks for dinner for two aint bad in my book. But on the other hand, I guess it's relative to how big your wallet is. Also, you can buy those homemade torts to go! Pros: Good food, fast service, Did I say good food? Cons: Eat till you pop, price (maybe), Hot sause not hot more

Good but not cheap 12/12/2002

For a college student such as myself Alamo cafe can be on the pricey side. They are quite good but in comparison to places such as Taco Cabana, they are pretty expensive. more

pass the salsa!! 12/1/2002

Everytime we head down to San Antonio we always try and hit the Alamo Cafe. The tortillas are to die for and the service, food everything is wonderful. Not over priced and a fun atmosphere. Wonderful for a whole family. We go with 6 people and meal is around $50.00 everytime. Pros: good food, good parking, friendly staff more

No Way, Jose! 10/28/2002

While the food at Alamo Cafe is good, there's no way it can be considered ""cheap eats"". A simple bean and cheese Chalupa plate (which costs almost nothing to make) will set you back around 10 bucks with a beverage. There are over a thousand Mexican Restaurants in the San Antonio area, any many of them have better food at around 4 or 5 bucks a plate. Now that's ""cheap eats"". more
