Date night regular 9/2/2009

We go to this place so often that the sushi chefs know us. It's our standard date night restaurant, and we were so excited when they made the special, ""White Star"" sushi, a regular. Try the crunchy shrimp roll, if you're new to sushi (sooooo good)... but if you're a sushi-expert, try the exotic ones - you won't be disappointed. Easy going atmosphere. Pros: Craving-inducing sushi, great service. more

if you are looking for good sushi this is the place!! 9/2/2009

love the sushi at this place! it has always been fresh and tasty. they have a great menu with a wide variety of sushi. they have really good specials as well. if you are looking for great service and yummy food come here! Pros: best sushi in town more

Great Sushi 9/2/2009

When it comes to sushi these guys do it right. We've tried several other places around and no one even comes close to Akai Hana. Their rolls are always fresh and I've never tried one I didn't like. Definitely try the crispy shrimp roll, very tasty. Best of all the price is very reasonable, not to mention they have some killer specials. The best place in Chapel Hill to get sushi!!! more

Great Sushi! 6/17/2009

Akai Hana is a great little sushi place, close to franklin street but not right in the center of all the commotion. They've got great deals on certain nights, and the crunchy shrimp roll is fantastic! more

Sushi excellent; some wait staff not so 6/10/2009

This sushi is my favorite-- including the crunchy shrimp roll. Yummy! Service, though, is a bit hit or miss. The owner is a great guy and always polite, and some of the staff is as well, but there are a *few* staff people who could use some customer-service training. However, the quality of the sushi is such that you really should check them out, if you like sushi at all! more

Great deals on Wednesdays! 6/10/2009

Akai Hana has a great variety of dishes, especially their soups, and has a lot more than just amazing sushi. It's definitely a wonderful deal for amazing food! Pros: Buy one get one free sushi rolls on Wednesdays more

is by far my favorite sushi place in Chapel Hill 6/8/2009

I have been a regular customer at Akai Hana for the last six years. The owner is a lovely man, and the service is always fantastic! I am a big sushi fan, and Akai Hana has some of the the best sushi that I have ever had. I highly recommend this quaint, locally owned restaurant. more

Best Sushi! 5/13/2009

Akai Hana is always packed but always quick and delicious! The outside patio is cute, so it's a great place to eat outside! Pros: good atmosphere & great sushi Cons: nothing! more

Best sushi for miles around 5/13/2009

Great sushi at a great price. Hurricane roll, anything with salmon is really good, gyoza are wonderful too! Pros: sushi is fabulous, gyoza are delicious Cons: none! more

great sushi close to campus 3/11/2009

I love this place--this is probably the best sushi just a close distance from downtown Chapel Hill and UNC. Definitely get the crunchy shrimp roll. Pros: delicious sushi with a nice atmosphere more

Good Sushi at a Nice Restaurant 3/4/2009

My girlfriend took me here last time I came up to UNC and the sushi is delicious. The atmosphere is such that even though it was rather crowded when we went, it still managed to be cozy. There are enough specials to keep it from denting your wallet too bad, but expensive enough to only be a special occasions thing. Overall, good enough to be worth the price with someone special. Pros: good food Cons: more people than seats more

A cute restaurant for all sorts of sushi lovers 3/4/2009

Akai Hana is my go to place a dinner with the out of town relative who's buying. Lots of local charm and the best sushi I've found in the area, at typical sushi prices. Pros: Specials, Sushi Cons: Parking, Crowded more

Great rolls, Great atmosphere 2/4/2009

In the chapel hill area, you have more than a few choices for sushi, but if you want the best, you go to Akai Hana. Their tempura is second to none, and their rolls are always fresh and delicious. Their sushi bar is always quick and is a great place if you're wanting a fast, delicious meal on your own. If you're dining with someone, you'll find the restaurant's ambience to be modern and comfortable. There's limited parking in their lot, but plenty of space right across the street, so it's never a hassle to get to the restaurant - something rare in the chapel hill area. Bottom line? Great sushi, fast service, great atmosphere. Pros: Tempura, Rolls, Atmosphere, Price Cons: Gets crowded quick more

The best sushi experience in the Chapel Hill area 2/4/2009

Akai Hana is more than great sushi. It's great service, great atmosphere, and great prices. The miso soup is the best I've had in the Triangle (seasoned perfectly). The sushi rolls are always fresh and beautifully presented. What I especially love is the friendliness of the waitstaff and the speed of service. You'll never wait more than 15 minutes for your sushi to be brought to the table, no matter how crowded the restaurant is. Their menu is expansive, with a variety of tempura and other dinner options, but I love their sushi so much that I've never tried anything else. Regardless, I've never NOT been pleased with my dining experience here. The best sushi place in Chapel Hill. Pros: Excellent service, excellent food, excellent prices Cons: few parking spaces in the front of the restaurant, but there's plenty across the street. more

The Freshest and Finest Tasting Sushi in the Triangle 12/14/2008

I've been eating sushi for 25 years and this is the best tasting andd freshest sushi I have ever had. The staff is very pleasant and courteous and always asks us if we enjoyed our meal. The salmon and unagi (eel) is outstanding and melts in your mouth. Their best dish is the Super Whitefish which is something I have never found, even in New York or California. The food is always very consistent, whether you go there for lunch or dinner. It's the only place we go to in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. Pros: Service, freshness, cleanliness more

Great food! 12/13/2008

Akai Hana offers a great menu in a relaxed yet chic ambiance. The shumai is amazing, as is the spider roll. Very reasonable price for the best sushi in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. Pros: Ambience, service, food more

Yummy sushi, friendly service 12/2/2008

I have been a fan of Akai Hana ever since I moved to Carrboro from San Francisco 10 years ago. The service is friendly. I especially like sitting at the sushi bar with my son who is 12; the sushi chefs are always very kind to him. more

Really nice 11/22/2008

I'm a big fan of Akai Hana. Excellent nigiri, especially salmon. Nice neighborhood feel, nice little two-person booths. Reasonably priced beer. The rolls are good; crunchy shrimp roll is a good value. more

Friendly atmosphere (like Cheers) 11/12/2008

We're so glad Akai Hana has started opening 7 days a week. We never could remember which day they were closed. The fish is very fresh, especially tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. The flounder is sweet but they only have it on the weekend. Some Japanese Restaurants have a larger selection of rolls, but we especially like the crunchy shrimp roll and the spicy tuna roll. The miso soup warms you up on the inside and the ginger salad dressing just can't be found anywhere else. We always start with a couple appetizers, usually gyoza or shrimp tempura, and finish with mango mochi ice cream. But you also can't go wrong with the divine chocolate cheesecake. They don't take reservations so that's why the regulars go during the week. Pros: The freshest sushi in the area Cons: Doesn't take reservations more

Positive atmosphere/Great food 11/12/2008

Everyone is friendly at Akai Hana.Nice Atmosphere Pros: Healthy tasting food Cons: Did not care for the live music while dining more
