worst moussaka ever 11/10/2010

Flavorless food - Moussaka consisted of bechamel sauce and potatoes with a few very thin strips of eggplant and a minimal amount of flavorless meat - the overwhelming taste was of the parmesan cheese which, for some reason, was on the top - then, again, who cares when it is served upside down - all for only an exorbitant $15 - they should pay you to take it off their hands. Evidently, there is a new chef (haha) - avoid this place like the plague until they get a newt chef or change ownership/management and get a new chef more

Does not meet the expectations 8/24/2008

The food in this restaurant is not great but it is OK for the price paid. I don't recommend you ordering wine in glass or in carafe since white wine that we ordered tasted just a little bit further than water. The staff can not speak English clearly and you can be blamed about not understanding what they say. As a first-timer of this different cuisine I would expect more enthusiasm from the staff about different options in the menu. Pros: Cheap Cons: Staff lacks enthusiasm more

Excellent Choice-Be WARY OF THE WINE 8/11/2008

Took my boyfriend here for his borthday this past Saturday. Enjoyed every last minute of the delicious food (we had tzatki and eggplant spread), greek salad and then snapper, spicey greek meatballs. \r \r HOWEVER, I asked for a bottle ofmerlot that was $30. The waitress said they didn't have it but she'd bring me another bottle. It was a $45 dollar bottle which is wuite a gap! I understand I should've mentioned to stay in the same price range, but she definitly took advantage of that situation! \r \r Lesson learned....great food, but be upfront when asking about the prices!\r \r Would go back in a heartbeat! Pros: Outside seating by park, authentic greek food, best i've had in astoria Cons: expensive wines--upcharge you on the bottle service without asking you! more

Terrible service, salty greasy food 7/22/2008

I would not recommend this place. There are plenty of other better Greek restaurants in Astoria. We tried three dishes on a Monday night. They were all over salted and greasy. Believe me, this place is pretty cheap with portions too. So don't expect t fill up here. We paid $41 for 3 dishes and wine. It may seem like a good deal, but not if you pay $10 for the cheese wrapped in dough--- what you get is 4 really bad mozzarella sticks. The octopus is really dry and rubbery. Save your money, go somewhere else!\r To top it all off, when we used our credit card to pay, the waitress brought back the receipt and had wrote in ""PLEASE CASH"" where we would normally fill-in for the tip. I suppose she would rather have no tip at all if not paid in cash. Tacky! Pros: nice atmosphere by the park Cons: awful food and terrible service more

rustic Greek 7/8/2008

I've been here several times, and am generally impressed with the food here. It's oily, not greasy -- and if you know what to order and balance your oil with your fresh veggies and chilled wine, you'll be in for a nice evening. I like going with at least 4 people so you can get a variety of dishes, such as:\r \r Grape leaves - nice & tender & tasty.\r Grilled octopus - as good as any I've had in Astoria.\r Tomatokeftedes (croquettes) - a little greasy, but tasty vegetarian option.\r Salads - they're all excellent.\r Melitzanosalata - chilled eggplant dip. with excellent bread.\r Baccalao - excellent fried cod, with a potent garlic dip.\r Lemon potatos - need I say more?\r Tigania - whopping pile of meat and potatoes (cut like fries, but prepared like lemon potatos with oil & paprika). Watch your cholesterol, it's yummy.\r \r I love that they give you free dessert every time (yogurt, cherries, & little pieces of cake or pastry). The service can be gruff & Greek, but don't let that bother you -- get a variety of things and enjoy sharing the food, take a stroll in the park after dinner. Pros: authentic food, free dessert, park nearby Cons: gruff service, lots of oil more

Terrible! Stay Away! 6/30/2008

The food was no more than passable. The ambiance was rustic , bordering on declase (time to update those busted old menus, guys). What really made this a truly regrettable dining experience was the service. It was downright insulting. I've lived in Astoria for 10 years now, and I'm used to being treated differently than the Greeks. That's fine. But, for example, when my mother asked for cream for her coffee (the nerve!), the servers response was, ""No! We only have Milk! What, do you NEED cream for your coffee?!"" And this was just the final insult. So much better in the area that isn't abusive to its customers. Pros: Its close to astoria park Cons: service, food, management, ambiance... more

Consistently bad food and lousy service 4/23/2008

YOU CAN?T blame me for trying. I really wanted to find a great restaurant close to home. With all the hype (and that?s all it is, by the way is hype) surrounding Agnanti, I was hoping for a good experience\r \r MY FIRST VISIT to Agnanti was a disaster. We were sent the wrong food, one person didn?t get their food until 15 minutes after the rest of the party was served, when the food came it was a greasy and oily mess, and while they say they take credit cards, you better bring along cash. The owners of Agnanti seem more concerned with not paying their taxes and sending the money they make back to Greece than they are with offering a pleasurable dinning experience to their customers. Credit cards are like Kryptonite there. And don?t even try to split the check between two cards!\r \r MY SECOND VISIT did show marginal improvement with the food, but the service was equally worse. The ?ambiance? of the outdoor seating includes a noisy street corner, loud talking staff so you can hardly carry on a conversation and cramming tables right up against one another so you can actually share your meal with the person sitting next to you. I never had to wait for a table, so I don't know if they take reservations.\r \r I WOULD RECOMMEND going to ?Elias Corner for Fish?(24-02 31st Street at 24th Ave.) for Greek style food or ?Mojave? (22-36 31st Street) for Mexican/Southwestern food. Pros: Not much. Umm, if I think really hard...it's close to my apartment. Cons: Bad dinning experience all around. Customers are treated poorly. more

Disappointment 9/5/2007

The food is ok. My spinach pie was very tasty but a little cold in the middle. The dessert was straight up awful but luckily it was free. The waiter lacked quickness and enthusiasm. To be honest everything was tollerable except for the sexual harrasment my friend and I recieved from the egotystical goombas sitting at the table next to us. Pros: good feta cheese Cons: bad service and customers more

Better Greek foood in Astoria 6/6/2007

Went to Agnanti tonight with my husband and inlaws and was a little let down. We live in Astoria and have been to Elias, Tyverna Kyclades and some other petty decent Greek restaurants, but compared, Agnanti's grilled octopus appetizer was bland and rubbery, red snapper over cooked, red lentil spread appetizer saturated in oil and rooster entree overcooked as well. In addition, service, although very nice, was very slow (Wednesday night, about 8:30pm) \r They did have a great dry Greek white wine though, and it was 'on special' per bottle\r The atmosphere is nice, it's right by the park, but the food did not impress. Perhaps it was an off night? more

A Greek Tavern by Astoria Park 3/29/2007

When people ask me where they can go to eat real, homecooked , Greek food I do not second guess referring them to Agnanti Meze. Whether your having some appetizers and some wine or feasting it up with their dinner dishes you will be more than satisfied... This wonderful resturant is located right near Astoria Park and when it's warm out, sitting at a table outside is just great. Don't get me wrong the inside of the resturant is great as well, They have pictures of old Greek movies on the wall and a fireplace in the back that fits just right and gives the place a warm homefelt setting. I reccomend trying the grilled octopus and tirokefteri dip and if your in the mood for something fullfilling the Aegean pasta awaits you... Don't forget to have a class of wine! Pros: Great food! Cons: Not having enough room for it! more

Hidden Jem 3/13/2007

I visited AGNANTI in astoria for the first time yesterday, and was just ecstatic that we found a fabulously authentic yet cozy restaurant, off the beaten path of Astoria. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and since it was our 1st time, we let her choose a few of the appetizers (best thing we did - those were our favorite dishes). My favorite was the seafood pasta and the cheese croqettes... BIG success amongst our group, and we'll surely visit again more

NAME ME ONE BETTER IN QUEENS 3/12/2007

I live in the area and and been a steady customer since they opened five years ago. I dont ordinarily review places but some of these reviews infuriated me and made me wonder if im attending the same restuarant as some of these people. The service and food are amazing. The place is known for their appetizers which is great for people like me who can never decide what they want to eat, so every time i go I get three or four as a meal. My favorites are the shrimp giouvetsi, which is feta shrimps tomato baked and serverd in a funky shaped bowl. I also enjoy the pastroumali which is a homemade pita with a greek cheese i could never pronounce and a thin liced piece of beef. Its not your typical restaurant and for avid restaurant goers will tell you the servive is exceptional. The staff is alwys up for a conversation. And as far as those who complain of the service and reservations well dont go for dinner on a saturday night without a reservation and you will most likely not wait. ohh and stop calling these people twenty minutes before you go and consider it a reservation. I wish them all the best and will cointinue to say its the best queens offers. Pros: food is incredible, staff is friendly Cons: that it cant seat more people more

bad service, good appetizers, average entrees 2/11/2007

We were really excited to try Agnanti, given Zagat's high ratings but this place was horribly disappointing. They do not respect reservations. We had 6:30 reservations and they did not have any indoor seating for available for us. We ended up sitting in the outdoor awning protected tables that were still pretty cold because we did not want to wait. There were several groups with reservations that were waiting for at least 30-40 minutes. We saw a couple storm off in frustration. Yet, they happen to let a group of 8 walk right in and sit down while groups of two were waiting around. \r \r The appetizers were well made. We had the saganaki which was really good. The entrees were fairly bland an uninspiring. \r \r We also asked beforehand to make sure they take credit card which they do. However when the bill came after they took our credit card, they actually write on the tip section, ""cash please"" and they write in the total for you without the tip so there's no way for you to write it in. I thought that was very sketchy. \r \r Not worth the trek to Astoria if you're not nearby Pros: good price, decent appetizers Cons: bad service, long wait, far from the subway more

Great greek food 12/3/2006

Great little place for greek food right by Astoria Park. I've been there on separate occasions with 1 or 2 people and with large groups as well. Service sometimes is lacking but the place sometimes is also jam packed which should be considered as well. Place is great for individual entree's or share in a family style setting. Food is also great and is different from the other bland food places that are found in Astoria. Definetly recommend everything on the menu! more

Food was good, but not good enough to counter the bad service. 9/3/2006

I'd seen the place a few times and we finally took the opportunity to go there. They were busy but we were promptly seated (after the hostess was finished talking on her cell phone out front). Then we waited a good 10 minutes before the waitress came up to take our orders (or acknowledge us). It took another 10 minutes for me to receive a WATER (the other two people in my party had sodas in which they had received earlier). When the food came it was really good- again though, the other two people in my party got their entrees and it took another 15 minutes for mine to come!!! Ridiculous! We were never checked on the entire time and it was another fight to get the bill. Food was good- the service was so bad it soured any chances we'll be making it back. Pros: Cute location; Food was decent Cons: Service Sucked more

It's called Agnanti, and it's great 8/2/2006

First of all, the name of the restaurant is Agnanti, NOT Asnanti. Second, I don't know what restaurant this Tina Frank person went to, but it's not this one. This one didn't have the pork dish Tina claims to have disliked. It's a lovely place without outdoor seating and amazingly delicious food. We shared many plates of appetizers and each one was delectable. Try the zucchini croquettes, they're amazing! We also had stuffed grape leaves with salmon, chicken boreck, and fried baccala. The marinated eggplant is also delicious. With an ice cold carafe of wine, we had a wonderful evening. Pros: outdoor seating, appetizers and small plates Cons: service a bit slow more

Dont Waste Your Money or Time. 7/8/2006

My main course arrived, and it was supposed to be pork souvlaki with fries. What I got was barely 1/4 lb of PORK FAT SHAVINGS from the bottom scrapings of a fry grill and hideously greasy fries. Sent it back, GOT THE SAME THING. Gave the waitress a $10 tip and promptly left. \r ABSOLUTELY NOT RECOMMENDED. dont' let the ""Zagat raves"" in the window fool you! So many other great places in Astoria. \r \r THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. \r Cons: AWFUL FOOD. RIPOFF. more
