Beware of the 4-person rooms 8/18/2007

I was hospitalized twice at Mt. Auburn, and my experience was quite negative. Both times I was in rooms for four people, which doesn't happen in other modern hospitals that I know. It's impossible to sleep when one or more of the other people might be watching television (there are some people who leave the tv on all the time). I had a problem with the nursing care also. My condition left me very weak, and when I decided it would be good to take a shower. The nurse set me up with a shower bench and said she would come back to check on me. When I was done washing myself, I couldn't get up from the bench, and the call cord was out of my reach. I was very weak from a bad hyperthyroid problem, and couldn't get up. It was 45 minutes before anyone came to help me, and I was very cold and miserable. On the other hand, there are some units at Mt. Auburn that I think don't have 4-person rooms (maybe they will all disappear soon). In addition, snags with nursing care can happen anywhere. It also sounds as though the walk-in clinic is a very useful place to get medical care when one's regular doctor is not available. more
