Here ye, here ye:
I’ve been hearing about Whirley Ball for ages and was always intrigued…just not captivated enough to drive to Edmonds on my own accord. We had a work related event there this week and the “sport” is all that people told me it could be. Lacrosse meets bumper cars. Competitive nature meets looking ridiculous. Throw in beer for good measure. From what I can tell its garnered an understandably loyal and eccentric following.
Rent a court for events or just show up. Plenty of entertainment while you’re waiting for your turn: practice wall, arcade games, observation area, snack bar, etc.
The actual game is in fact very fun…my general rule of thumb is that if it includes a whiffle ball it can’t be bad. Beyond the game, the arena/venue has that very hard to find element reminiscent of roller rinks & other childhood activity halls. Something about the lighting, the best kind of gross pizza, the staff hijinx – it’s magical. It’s a constant reminder of how much happiness these places could bring when you were little. I tried to write a review of my favorite youth skating rink and it’s out of business. I’ll save my ruminations on how this is directly related to the bankruptcy of my childhood innocence and sanguinity, for my future G.A.N. (great American novel). I digress.
Whirley Ball is great not only for its fundamental entertainment value, but perhaps more importantly for its positive vibe, atmosphere, and overall cheer.
