We smelled a gas odor outside. Had the gas company come - they couldn't figure it out and said it was unburned gas expelled from the gas discharge pipe on the roof. They Red Tagged the furnace. Called Johnson Heating and Caleb came out, checked EVERY where for a leak and found none.He got on the roof and checked the exhaust from the furnace - nothing unusual. He didn't smell the gas like my wife and I had. He called 2-3 other technicians to get their input as the mystery deepened. I smelled the gas again outside. Caleb called the gas company who was unresponsive to his inquiry about the smell. He asked to talk to the tech who was out earlier and was told that was not possible. That very much upset me as there WAS a smell of GAS !! I asked Caleb if he would stay while I called the gas company (Vectren) back - He could and while I called the gas company back to "re-report" the gas smell, he started servicing/cleaning our furnace. When Caleb went outside for something, he smelled the strong odor of gas, too. When the second gas company rep arrived Caleb explained that he smelled the gas too (confirming to the gas co that my wife and I were not "smelling things" that weren't there!!). Both techs agreed that we did not have a leak at or in our house. After much searching and no luck, the gas tech finally smelled the gas too. So at this point we have a gas smell and NO RESOLUTION. I suggested the gas tech check the neighbors meter and the mystery was solved - gas leak at the neighbors meter. The gas co tech suggested that the leak was not bad and that it would probably be SPRING before it gets fixed (today is NOV 26 !!) - that the leak was not bad, the air is dispersing the gas, that the leak was before the meter so no additional charges for the customer and that they didn't like shutting off appliances in the winter. The neighbor stated that he preferred to have it done a lot sooner and I chimed in that I didn't want to be smelling that odor all winter !!! Leak will be fixed in December. Caleb was tenacious in making sure that a positive resolution was found and didn't want to leave our home KNOWING that there was a gas leak coming from somewhere. THANKS Caleb !!!!
