I called to get a price on a part I thought I needed to repair my daughter's washer. After I gave the person on the phone the model number, he asked me about the symptoms. When I explained the symptoms, he said, ""You might not need that part, but a much less expensive part. This is a simple test you can run to see which one it is.""
He had me run the test and probably saved me $50, a lot of time and headache. And he didn't charge for that service.
