No, the ""grumpy old man"" is not the Soup Nazi's brother. I have known him to be nothing but patient and helpful to knowledgeable and intelligent customers. On the other hand, he clearly has little patience for uninformed, undereducated, unintelligent, or unfocused people. I suppose that's rude or snobbish or whatever. Smarties won't have any trouble (you know who you are).
And if you are seeking to sell used books -- and it doesn't matter what store -- don't try to sell them just any old ""junk"". You might well provoke some attitude. Try to find out what areas the store specializes in (e.g., military history), what is ""hot"" in the market or is of regional interest, and in what subject areas there is a likelihood you could make a deal. If you are selling rare or antiquarian titles, do a bit of research first to learn how to estimate book condition and the range of prices being asked for that book in that condition. Then you can present evidence to make a case for your offering price. Consider a fair reseller markup too. This is all just due diligence on the seller's part.
One of the best reasons to go to this store is that the price charged is often lower than the marked price. The odds are better if you are buying several things, and if you are respectful and complimentary.
