Horrible experience...... RUDE RUDE RUDE. Owner was not helpful AT ALL and was insulting, at best. I would not patronize this shop EVER! more

Knows nothing of customer service 9/20/2011

The man, David, that works there was not only rude, but condescending and unhelpful. I sent him a list of books I wanted to sell, (not as an attachment, because he cannot open attachments) and he asked me to come into his store so he could look at them instead. He offered me a ridiculous price and when I tried to bargain with him, he raised his voice in a threatening manner. I told him that I would rather donate these books and left the store. I wouldn't recommend this store to anyone. more

A Store for Bibliophiles and Serious Readers 1/7/2011

No, the ""grumpy old man"" is not the Soup Nazi's brother. I have known him to be nothing but patient and helpful to knowledgeable and intelligent customers. On the other hand, he clearly has little patience for uninformed, undereducated, unintelligent, or unfocused people. I suppose that's rude or snobbish or whatever. Smarties won't have any trouble (you know who you are). And if you are seeking to sell used books -- and it doesn't matter what store -- don't try to sell them just any old ""junk"". You might well provoke some attitude. Try to find out what areas the store specializes in (e.g., military history), what is ""hot"" in the market or is of regional interest, and in what subject areas there is a likelihood you could make a deal. If you are selling rare or antiquarian titles, do a bit of research first to learn how to estimate book condition and the range of prices being asked for that book in that condition. Then you can present evidence to make a case for your offering price. Consider a fair reseller markup too. This is all just due diligence on the seller's part. One of the best reasons to go to this store is that the price charged is often lower than the marked price. The odds are better if you are buying several things, and if you are respectful and complimentary. more

Favorite book store0 6/10/2010

I've been going there regularly for about a year, and I have to say that I have never had any problems with the owner. He's always kind and considerate to me, I've witnessed him appraise books without any hesitation, and he has taken the time to get to know my tastes to the point where he'll hold books for me so I can look at them. Thanks to him, I'm able to find obscure works (For instance, a treatise on the translation of geographical place names) that I really need for my line of work. I've called him, after hours, and he took time to check the whole store for books for me, and this was without recognizing my voice. From the first time I was in there in December to the last time I was there, on Monday, I've never had anything but wonderful experiences, and I've never seen him be anything but kind, professional, and wonderful to his customers. This says nothing of the selection of books in the store, which I also love. My degree is in Japanese lit, and I'm an aspiring translato more

Miserable 3/17/2009

The grumpy old man in there is pretty much an a**h***. I brought in a couple books that I though he may be interested in (to buy), from the 18th century. There wasnt anyone in there and I thought he would give me a couple minutes of his time. He grabbed them out of my hands and said ""Whadda ya want for 'em?"" I said a value that I thought was reasonable and he responded with ""No...and I don't do free appraisals"" Pros: Nothing Cons: Owner more

Classic Books: Good selection, fair prices 1/27/2009

The previous reviews puzzle me a bit; I found the proprietor to be friendly without being pushy, and when I asked for help finding a book, he was more than willing. His selection of books in the genres I enjoy was impressive and priced fairly. I like his store a lot, and will no doubt visit frequently. Pros: No pressure, good selection, good prices Cons: Parking can be an issue more

Good Luck! 7/29/2008

The proprietor of this store is very confrontational and irritating. I don't know what's missing in his life, but whatever it is, it's huge. I've bought books before and obviously he did not approve as he held it up to his face and chuckled to himself. One time I asked him where his political books were. He said he had a fine selection but they hadn't been selling lately. When I examined them, I found them all to be of one political persuasion, which I didn't mind, but I prefer a balanced selection. I've also heard him be very rude to people on the phone. Pros: Decent selection, if you're interested in the topics he carries Cons: Rude service more

Extremely rude 5/12/2008

I called this establishment to see about a book I have been looking for and the man who I spoke with was so rude I had to hang up. I wouldn't recommend this business to anyway. I can't believe any business owner would act so rudely to a potential customer. more
