After a speedy response to our call on a Sunday morning after our a.c. unit started acting up, 2 very nice folks from A1 came out and spent a few minutes troubleshooting our system. Based on my troubleshooting, I suspected it was either a capacitor and/or motor issue but was told I would need an entire new system which would cost at least $6000! Wow! They took a lot of time building value in what they represent and told me nearly 20 times how they are not high pressure.
Hmm. After the first 13 times I started to sense the contrary. They did offer to replace these 2 components for $700. We thanked them for their time, paid the obligatory $100 fee and started to do some research on our own.
I narrowed the problem down to a power supply issue and determined the compressor contactor the likely culprit. I unscrewed the cover and saw one node completely obliterated and scorched- in other words, it was not receiving power.
Another search led me to U-fix it in Dallas. I took the part in and they gave me a replacement for $32. After a 5 minute install and restoring power, everything was working as it should.
The takeaway was had we chosen the repair, the problem would have persisted since the ""professionals"" did not accurately diagnose the problem and I would have ended up paying ANOTHER service fee and god knows how much for the right part.
Before you sign off on an entirely new system, have someone who knows what they are doing come by and look at your system. It may save you thousands.
