Dishonest or Incompetent? 8/12/2010

I initiated contact with Potamkin Hyundai via an internet sales service at the end of July 2010. Their offer on the car that I wanted was very good, so I figured it was worth arranging things over the phone and traveling 90 minutes to get the car I wanted for a good price. I made a $500 credit card deposit over the phone and waited for them to get the car. I tell them there will be no trade-in and no dealer financing - OK with them. I get moved from the internet-guy to a salesman. The initial e-mailed sales contract was incomplete - I had them do it again. The sales-manager calls - they couldn't get the 2010 model so they offered the 2011 at the same price if I would take my alternate color choice - I said OK. Soon there was a call that it would cost $500 more - I said no - they said they would find the 2010. Two days pass - then they said they had car that I wanted - I make plans to go in and get a check and they will give me the VIN number by phone tomorrow . The next day the salesman calls - this car has a $400 ""carbon-fiber"" dash in it, but they will give it to me for $200 - I tell them that I know this is an aftermarket installation (not a Hyundai option) and find I can buy it on-line for under $50. I am not interested in paying extra for it. He goes back to the manager and will call back. The next call says that they can't honor the price they gave me (and was on the sales contract) unless I take the financing - I am not interested in financing - I told them from the start that I was not doing that. Again I say ""no thanks"". The salesman will talk with his manager. Several hours later I have not heard from the manager - I call - he gets angry - he can't make any money on this deal, because I am not willing to pay more than the contract price - why won't I just do the financing? I tell him no thanks and decide to end this fiasco. I ask about my initial $500 deposit - he says the paperwork was never done on it, it was never charged to my credit card. I call Visa and find that it was charged to my credit card - I put in a disputed charge claim and call the dealership back. The sales manager says he did not know it was charged to me and says that he will credit my card. We'll see.... So, dishonest or just plain incompetent? Answers to questions got different responses at different times. I was shuttled between three people who had different stories. The sales manager did not really seem to know what was going on until he wanted more money. Don't do business with them - I wasted 6 days with them. As they say - be willing to just walk away. more
