As tourists in the area we found ourselves in the Old Mill District, an upscale outdoor mall on the site of an old lumber mill on the banks of the Deschutes River. Wandering in on a Saturday night in October, we were immediately seated and waited on, both by very personable women. The decor was fitting for the area, and the table of semi-formally decked out teens appeared as appropriate as our casual dress. My coffee came immediately and promised a quality that the menu did not. Usually, a menu that includes burgers and fish n' chips can't produce in the steak and seafood dishes. Not so, here. The Caesar Salad was fresh and tasty. My steak was a true medium-rare and tender. The veggie, while just green beans, was not too raw and not too limp.. The basmati rice was very subtly laced with lemon and thyme and done just right. This isn't a gourmet menu, but it is expertly done with a light touch. The seafood place down the block could learn a few things from the folks at Greg's.
