My fiance and I are going through a similar problem. We were all set up for the e-billing way back in october of last year. Unfortunately, something went wrong and we unknowingly were taken off the program. Something always seemed a little off when we balanced the check book, but we figured not everything was accounted for and wrote it off. (at this time we had NEVER recieved anything in the mail) I became pregnant with my first and it slowly turned into a high-risk pregnancy. I was very sick and on bedrest collecting expensive medical bills while my fiance worked 65 hour weeks when we recieved a shut-off notice in the mail from Nicor stating we had one week to pay our past due balnce in full before it would be shut-off. Our late fees and bill added up to almost $4500 and simply could not be paid in full. I called to set up a deferred payment plan and was told I was not approved. Inevitably the following week our gas was shut-off. The only way out of it was to fax over a medical form from my doctor explaining how the shut-off would harm the pregnancy and that it should be immediately turned back on. You have two weeks to send in this form according to Nicor or your ineligable for a turn-on without paying in full. Well, we faxed that form over every day that nicor said it wasnt recieved. Nothing wrong with the fax machine, nothing wrong with the fax number. 15 times we faxed the medical form over. Two weeks went by without service and we recieved a phone call. NICOR HAD JUST THEN (after the cut-off date) RECIEVED THE MEDICAL FORM AND WOULD NOT HONOR IT! Pretty convienient huh?! I am now 39 weeks pregnant, without hot water, hot food, and soon a warm house. My pregnancy is suffering 10 fold. Customer service at Nicor might as well have told me to shove it.
