Mediocre, yet overpriced 12/4/2008

I recently dined at Old Germany Restaurant with a friend. I am half German, half Austrian and spent my first 30 or so years in these two countries so I kind of know what I'm talking about. My expectations were on the higher side based on earlier reviews. \r In a nutshell, Old Germany is one of the poorer choices for German fare that I have found in the U.S: \r Ambiance: 3.5 stars. Lots of German-American kitsch and paraphernalia inside, yet acceptable for a place in the US. that wants to serve the German cliche. On the upside, tablecloth and napkins were real fabric.\r Service: 4 stars. The waiter was attentive, yet not going overboard in the attention we were afforded. The bread basket with German style whole grain breads and butter was nice. However, there was no freshly baked bread served, like a brezel or semmel.\r Beverage: 1 star. My Spaten Oktoberfest beer (0.5 liters) was served in a Weizen beer glass. This is an absolute sacrilege and would disqualify the place in Germany right away. The beer accordingly was stale. \r Food: 2 stars. My Wiener Schnitzel was appropriately thin cut and tender. However, the bread crumb crust was way too thick and too dark (the color should be bright golden, mine was almost ebony). There was no lemon slice served with it which is a must. The side red cabbage was overcooked. The Spaetzle (German egg noodles) served as a side were apparently not home-made. The side salad was crisp, but the house vinaigrette dressing watery.\r Normally, a highlight of German/Austrian food are the desserts based on fresh fruits, ice cream, a light mousse and fresh pastry. For dessert, Old Germany is a total disappointment with the usual selection of prefabricated dessert cakes rotating behind a glass window. \r In summary, it was not worth the money. For rural Oklahoma, their business model may be working. Just do not get fooled into believing that their restaurant and the attention they put into preparing their food reflect the better of German cuisine. Pros: Attentive service, decent ambiance Cons: Sub-par antiquated ""German style"" food, hardly any fresh ingredients, overpriced more
